ROB CHRISTMAN STACKS WINS AT CVMA ROUND 3

2:00-Minute Barrier Broken in Ultra Lightweight Shootout

CVMA ran Round 3 of its 7-round Winter Series this past weekend at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway in Desert Center, CA, offering riders a final dose of competition before the club takes a break for the holidays. Racing resumes in January.

The weekend kicked off with Formula Open, in which the MRA’s Rob Christman has asserted dominance all season. After a poor start Christman worked his way to the front of the pack and crossed the line in first on his GSX-R1000. Second place went to Utah SportBike Association’s Oleg Pianykh on his MotoStation-backed GSX-R1000. Pianykh jumped the start and was penalized 5 seconds, but went fast enough to negate the penalty. Brian Short took third on his GSX-R1000, making it an all-Suzuki podium. Christman won again on Sunday while Pianykh was sidelined with a mechanical, leaving Short in second and putting Daytona Anderson on the third step of the podium on his GSX-R1000.

Sunday’s Open Shootout again saw Rob Christman win the race, while Yamaha YZF-R6 mounted Brian Short finished second. The real battle was for third was heated, with Daytona Anderson on is GSX-R1000 fighting hard with CVMA number 1 plate holder Bill McCoy on his BMW S1000RR. Anderson succeeded in holding off the club champion and took third.

In Supersport Open Daytona Anderson that took the win on both days, followed by James Romero and Todd Larson.

Race lengths were shortened on Sunday due to high winds and blowing sand, and in the abbreviated, 8-lap Middlweight Shootout it was a game of cat and mouse between young Andrew Zabzydr on a new-to-him AP MotoArts sponsored GSX-R600 and Jorge Covarrubias on his TrackDaz R6Mafia YZF-R6. The two were never more than a few bike lengths apart as Covarrubias gave chase to Zabzydr, and while Covarrubias closed the gap and attempted a pass in the second-to-last corner, he wasn’t able to make it stick and came in second. Joanna Bitter, CVMA’s number 4 plate holder and 2014 FemmeWalla champion, took third.

CVMA ran a new class for Round 3: 350 Supersport. This class was created to accommodate the Ninja 300 and make room for the hotly anticipated Yamaha R3 and KTM RC390. Shane Liberty won the race Saturday aboard his AP MotoArts-backed Ninja 300, followed by Ruben Casarez and Josh Fogle on AP MotoArts Ninja 250s. In Sunday’s race Ari Henning edged out Liberty for the win on his Honda CBR250R, with Casarez taking third.

In Ultra Lightweight Shootout, Ari Henning won both days on his Honda CBR250R, setting a new class record of 1:58.9 in the process. Liberty took second and Casarez secured third on Saturday, while Liberty took second and Fogle took third on Sunday.

Racing recommences at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway the weekend of January 17-18, 2015. CVMA offers two full days of racing every race weekend and also includes Saturday qualifying and a wide variety of classes to choose from. Additionally, CVMA offers free reciprocity as a means of encouraging racers from other clubs to come out and compete.
