Rob Christman (19) Takes Home the Three-peat in the MRA’s Round 6 at High Plains Raceway

Rob Christman has been on a mission throughout this 40th Anniversary season of the Motorcycle Roadracing Association. Christman, who has taken home his third consecutive win in the Race of the Rockies Overall Championship, has said that he has been dedicated and working hard to make this an amazing season; something that he has been proving since it began. Christman started out the season with a first place in the premier class only to fall to a disappointing 5th in Round 2 at High Plains Raceway. Round 3 found him back in the top rankings with a 2nd place finish behind Number 1 plate holder Dan Turner, at Pueblo Motorsports Park . Since Round 4, however, Christman has led the pack, taking home three straight wins in the hotly contested featured class.

The Round 6 race, on the full course at High Plains Raceway, started out with Christman taking the holeshot into Turn 1. Christman was followed by Dan Turner and Ricky Orlando for a few laps until he pulled a substantial gap and walked away from the pack.

Meanwhile, Tracy Schram, who had taken a spill in an earlier class and was on a borrowed bike for the Race of the Rockies, had to start at the back of the grid. Schram battled through the field to finish an impressive 3rd place behind Christman and Turner.

Though the race was not as tightly contested as some this season, Christman rode a fantastic race and has almost clinched the overall MRA Championship with one round to go.

But the Motorcycle Roadracing Association isn’t just the Race of the Rockies class and many of the other classes have close battles and no clear favorites. With the changed points structure that began this season, Round 7 will be the final testing ground to stake a claim on the remaining MRA Championships up for grabs.

At the head of the pack is Shannon Moham who took home an unbelievable 7 first-place finishes in this round. Moham typically races around eight different classes each round and, after checking his results, only four of his last 48 races have not ended in a top-three podium finish. Moham’s Round 6 finishes included first place in the Heavyweight Superbike, Supertwins GTU, Race of the Rockies GTU, Modern Vintage GTU, Solo Heavyweight Endurance, Solo Lightweight Endurance and Lightweight Grand Prix classes. Moham is surely on track to bring home yet another Clubman Overall Points Championship, and considering we race with some 200 men and women each round, Moham has taken this sport to the highest level, a level which we all strive to achieve in our own way.

Others fighting for class Championships include Nik Lenski and Pete Tabor, both fighting for the title in Middleweight Supersport, Middleweight Superbike, Heavyweight Supersport and Heavyweight Superbike. Lenski and Tabor are only separated by two points in Middleweight Supersport with Tabor in the lead but Lenski beat Tabor in this round so the Championship is still up in the air.

Formula 40 is close with Ricky Orlando leading Rob Christman by only ten points separating first and second. And Supertwins GTU is tied for second with Ray Ray Gaimara and Chris Weed battling hard…Weed beat out Gaimara in this round so the last round will be the determiner.

And this is just how we like to see it in racing, waiting until the last round to see who will walk away with the class titles. Nyles Gourlie said it best this past weekend, on Sunday celebrating his birthday: “There’s nowhere else I’d rather be than here at the track, hanging out with friends, drinking beer (after the track is cold), and racing motorcycles.”

And I agree that there is nowhere else I’d rather be on a beautiful Colorado summer weekend than at the track racing against my friends. If you’re interested in being a part of the final round of MRA’s 40th-Anniversary season, come out to Pikes Peak International Speedway, September 14th- 15th, in Fountain, Colorado for the final round of an amazing season!

As always, the MRA is dedicated to promoting safe and competitive motorcycle road racing events for enthusiasts in Colorado and the surrounding area. For more information, go to www.mra-racing.org or check us out on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/MotorcycleRoadracingAssociation
