Christman Cracks Track Record in Round 5 at High Plains Raceway

Picture the perfect race weekend; 80 degree temperatures, blue skies, no wind. That is exactly how Round 5 of the Motorcycle Roadracing Association’s weekend went at High Plains Raceway, August 10th and 11th. Perfect conditions leading to Rob Christman taking home his second, back to back win, in the overall Race of the Rockies premier class championship. Rob also managed to break the North course track record with a 1.13.116, a record previously held by AMA racer Jake Gagne with a 1:13.330 set this year during Round 1. It was an epic weekend for Christman, and a few of his other fellow competitors, as many of the class championships are still up for grabs!

In the Race of the Rockies class, Christman got the hole shot and was leading the first three laps when there was a red flag incident, due to a high side in turn 2, which sent the riders back to the pits. Christman had pulled a fairly substantial lead by the first three laps and he felt frustrated to have to try again to out race Tracy Schram who was not going to give up very easily. After the restart, Christman lead again for a few laps until Schram came up hard and passed him to take the front position. After following behind Schram for a couple of laps Christman felt he knew where he could overtake him, he passed, and never looked back. Rob finished strong but there is still some wiggle room in the championship allowing Dan Turner a possible shot at the overall. After the win, Christman made a point of thanking not only his sponsors but Dan Turner, one of his top rivals, for helping him to swap out engines Saturday night in order to run the Race of the Rockies race. “Dan is the most awesome guy in this whole club. I was having some overheating issues with my motor and without Dan I couldn’t have raced. I’m racing against him, I’m running faster than him, and he still wants to help me. Most people aren’t like that.” Both riders have an agreement that they share what they have; my trailer is your trailer and vice versa. It says a lot about the club and the men and women who race in it. That being said, Christman wants to thank his sponsors: G-Force Powersports, Roadrace Factory, Dunlop, Rex Coulthard, STM Suspension (Dave Rose), Tri City Cycle, Bell Powersports, and King GMC, with a special shout out to Danny “Ninja Tech” Anderson for all of his help with the bike. Rob also took home firsts in Formula 40 and Open Superbike giving him a good shot at an overall clubman championship as well.

Christman wasn’t the only winner this weekend, Shannon Moham took home an impressive 6 wins in Race of the Rockies, Heavyweight Endurance, Lightweight Endurance, Supertwins GTU, Lightweight GP, Heavyweight Superbike and a second in Modern Vintage GTU. Shannon leads the overall Clubman battle with Nik Lenski coming on strong and many others are vying for a spot in the top five. Unlike any recent season, this is the closest points race we’ve seen. With the new points structure, many racers have the opportunity to fight for championships despite a rough weekend or an unexpected get off. Close to half of the classes are undecided as far as clear leaders and the remaining classes have heated battles for top five overalls. The new 400cc and 500cc Production Cups, both filling up their respective grids, are going strong with Jason Madama leading the pack and Michael Davis and Jeremy Widmann biting at his heels. And our Ladies of the Rockies class has a full grid with nine women showing up and racing against unsurpassable Wyeth Jackson leading the championship with a commanding lead over Donna Turner solidly in second.

Overall this anniversary season has lived up to the expectations of a club that garners a rich and lengthy history in Colorado and the country. As the Motorcycle Roadracing Association, recipient of the Colorado Motorsports Hall of Fame 2013 Agajanian Award, strives to maintain that history with new champions like Rob Christman and consummate winners like World Superbike racer Shane Turpin and Daytona all-time record holder Ricky Orlando, that history and reputation are being well cared for. Come out and be a part of the history that created this incredible club and watch as the season comes to a climactic end…to see who will walk away with the number one plate, the club championship, and bragging rights for the rest of the year. Our next race is coming up quickly and will be held at High Plains Raceway in Byers, Colorado on August 24th and 25th. We all hope to see you there cheering for your favorites or racing against them!
