The following is a sequence of J.J. Roetlin (#940) crashing into an air barrier-protected wall. Photos by John Marley / Cycle Scene Magazine.

JJ Roetlin know he's going to hit the barrier, and so does the photographer.

Roetlin is vaulted over the bars and lands on the top of the barrier on his head.

Collecting his wits, Roetlin gets up and heads for his bike

Roetlin receives the pieces of his shifter peg from Cornerworker Dick Coburn and rides away.

All three of these accidents happened on the same corner at 3 different events. Racers Matt Binns #47 and Darryn Wilbur #10 crashed at a national event which had soft barriers deployed at the corner. Shannonville hosts seven regional races, and two national races during the summer. Only for the nationals are the air fences are used due to the lack of funding. The third set were taken at the same corner as the other ones but at a regional race several weeks later in the summer. Fortunately, the racer, Brent Strong #81, will be back on the track this season, having suffered shoulder injuries. When asked if he believed his injuries would be less severe had the fence been in place. His answer was YES, in no uncertain terms! Photos by Flair Photo.

Robert Nigl knows he has run out of racetrack in turn 6 at Daytona.

Nigl nails the air barrier and was unhurt. He rode the bike away and actually stayed in the race.

Rider of bike #234 low-sides exiting turn six at Daytona. He's got a good look at the seam between the plactic covered haybales and the air barrier.

He scrubs off speed before the impact and begins to turn his body around.

He impacts at the seam, but isn't hurt. The plastic covered haybales were replaced with another section of air barrier after this race, which is exactly where JJ Roetlin impacted two years later.
