MotoGP: Bradl Subbing For Marquez Again At Sachsenring

Sachsenring the midpoint of 2022 for resolute Repsol Honda Team

A historically successful circuit for the Repsol Honda Team, Pol Espargaro and home hero Stefan Bradl will be hoping to recapture the RC213Vs past performances in Germany after a tough run of races.

Since 2010, the Repsol Honda Team have been the undisputed rulers of the Sachsenring with dominant victories each year. Dani Pedrosa won the 2010 to 2012 editions before Marc Marquez joined the premier class and proved beyond doubt that he was the King of the Ring with eight straight wins in the premier class. 2021 was perhaps his most emotional victory as he returned to the top step of the podium some 581 days after his last win. Unfortunately, Marquez will not be in attendance this year as the King of the Ring continues his recovery from a fourth right arm operation at home in Spain.

Thoughts of a heartbreaking home GP were put to rest for Pol Espargaro with a busy and productive test on Monday, this knowledge spurring the #44 on for another attempt in Germany. Steady results inside the top ten, including a tenth last year aboard the Honda RC213V, mark the German track as a consistent one for Espargaro but he’s aiming to make another step this year. The tight layout of the Sachsenring presents a new challenge compared to the previous two rounds in Mugello and Barcelona.

As the only German rider on the premier class grid, there will be a lot of attention on Stefan Bradl as he enters his third race with the Repsol Honda Team. Bradl last raced in front of his home crowd in 2019, filling in for the injured Jorge Lorenzo, and earned an impressive tenth place finish. His best result in the premier class at home stands as a fourth place, achieved in 2013 when riding the LCR Honda.

Pol Espargaro

“After a really busy test on Monday, it was good to have a week away from the races to focus on my physical training. We now arrive in Germany for the tenth race for the year, a circuit where Honda has had a lot of success in the past. Our situation this year is a little different but I am here to keep giving my maximum each time we go out on the bike. Let’s see what happens this weekend, the weather is looking quite warm and it looks like the stands will be full, which is of course always great.”

Stefan Bradl

“I’m looking forward to riding at the Sachsenring again, it’s always a pleasure to ride in front of the German fans. It has been a few years since I last rode there but the memories I have of 2019 are very good, we put together a strong race at short notice. Now everything is much closer in MotoGP and we have some other plans to focus on. No matter what, I want to put on a good show for all the fans who come out to see us. Los geht’s!”

Featured In the June 2022 issue of Roadracing World:

After World War II, most of German industry was in ruins, and the DKW motorcycle factory located in Zschopau, now in the Russian (or Eastern) sector, had been badly damaged.  A new DKW factory was built at Ingolstadt in the Western sector of Germany, while the factory in Zschopau became the home of a new motorcycle company, VEB Motorradwerk Zschopau, or MZ.

The company started producing two-stroke street motorcycles under the name IFA in 1946. In 1950, an IFA 125cc road racer was created, based on the company’s piston-port streetbike…

Much has been written about Ernst Degner’s defection to the West in 1961, but behind the Iron Curtain, work at the MZ race shop didn’t stop with his departure. The little company, with not a lot of resources but a lot of imagination, took podiums at the Isle of Man and challenged for World Championships. MotoGP: Who Will Now Reign At Sachsenring?

Who will be the new King of the Sachsenring?

There’s an empty throne up for the taking, with plenty of contenders ready for the challenge

Monday, 13 June 2022

There’s throwing down the gauntlet and then there’s Fabio Quartararo’s (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™) Catalan GP. The reigning Champion is now 22 points clear after drama hit for key rivals Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) and Enea Bastianini (Gresini Racing MotoGP™), plus that late race heartbreak for Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing) that saw him cede more points than he thought… and now, it’s time for a new name on the top step in Germany for the first time since 2012.

Last year it seemed a long shot for King of the Sachsenring Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) to retain his crown, but retain it he did to make some more history. Now, the number 93 is back on the sidelines after another big investment in his racing future, but that offers a huge opportunity for those on the chase, and most likely Quartararo.

The Frenchman’s form in the Catalan GP was immense, and he surely leads the list of candidates to take to the Sachsenring throne. With the tight and twisty track offering some respite from the long straights and horsepower measuring contests of some recent venues, Yamaha should be in a stronger position too. Can Quartararo extend that lead further this weekend? And can Franco Morbidelli (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™) move forward? Rookie Darryn Binder (WithU Yamaha RNF MotoGP Team) managed to pip the Italian to second Yamaha honours in Barcelona.

Last year, however, the resistance was led by KTM. Miguel Oliveira (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) was within 1.7 seconds of Marquez to take second, no mean feat, and Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) came home fourth to put Quartararo in an Austrian sandwich. Overall, the Mattighofen marque were the best performing factory. What can they do this season? Barcelona saw more solid points as Binder took eighth and Oliveira ninth… but that’s not what KTM races for, and work continues to getting back towards the front.

For Ducati, despite the huge leaps forward towards arguably the best bike on the grid, the Sachsenring still proved a challenge in 2021. The venue may be the only one left that still merits talking about a track suiting a factory, or not as the case may be. Bagnaia led the charge last season with Jack Miller (Ducati Lenovo Team) for close company though, and it was a fight for a place in the top five – a far cry forward from even fairly recent history. What can Bagnaia do now on the bounce back? Can Miller find some mojo?

Prima Pramac Racing may have a fair bit to say in deciding the upper echelons of the timesheets too, with both riders on the podium in Barcelona. Johann Zarco is back in that consistent groove and Jorge Martin was back in the fight at the front with a bang, and add to that the Spaniard also has now had the surgery he needed to fix that niggling issue with his hand. How many guns can they bring blazing? And can Bastianini pull off another comeback after a crash out in Catalunya? Rookie Marco Bezzecchi (Mooney VR46 Racing Team) will also be looking to do the same after he crashed out on he coat tails of that incredible ride at Mugello.

Then there’s Aprilia. Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing) took a solid finish in Germany last year for the Noale factory, but that was then and this is now – and that “arguably the best bike” citation can be argued in this paragraph in 2022 too. It’s been an amazing podium run for Espargaro and he almost continued it in Barcelona before that heartbreaking early celebration, but everyone watching will be hoping that just fires the number 41 up even more to come back out swinging. How will the new RS-GP fare in Germany? And can Maverick Viñales (Aprilia Racing), whose progress continues to show some good steps, make another one at the Sachsenring?

For Suzuki, the venue was a tougher one last year and the Hamamatsu factory will be looking to use their track time from the post-Catalan GP test to right that in 2022. Joan Mir (Team Suzuki Ecstar) put in a stunning charge on Sunday too as he took off from 17th on the grid to finish fourth in Barcelona, so he’ll be looking to build on that momentum. Alex Rins, meanwhile, was caught up in that Turn 1 incident with Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda Idemitsu) and has a small fracture in his wrist… so he’ll likely be keen to try but will have to be passed fit.

At Honda, the weekend will be a big one for Stefan Bradl (Repsol Honda Team) as he arrives on home turf and with the biggest shoes possible to try and fill. The German had a tougher weekend in Barcelona and will want more at the Sachsenring, and so too will teammate Pol Espargaro after a tough Sunday. Alex Marquez (LCR Honda Castrol), meanwhile, arrives from a stunning comeback from last to tenth after that crash on Saturday saw him sit out qualifying, and the number 73 also did the most laps of anyone in the test on Monday after the race. He’ll be gunning for more progress, and we wait some more updates on Nakagami after the Japanese rider escaped injury but did stay in hospital for observation following the impact.

Who will stand on the top step at the Liqui Moly Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland? There will be no one on the grid who’s ever done it before, so there’s plenty to play for – in the Championship too. Tune in at 14:00 (GMT +2) on Sunday for another Sachsenring stunner as we reach the halfway point on 2022.

Vietti vs Canet rolls on to the Ring

It was a true classic in Barcelona, with the top two going toe to toe… will the Sachsenring serve up more of the same?

In the latter stages of the Moto2™ showdown in Barcelona, it looked like it was going to be bow tie day. But it wasn’t to be as Celestino Vietti (Mooney VR46 Racing Team) was back on the top step after a stylish late attack to deny said bowtie wearer, Aron Canet (Flexbox HP 40), and make the Spaniard wait. Last year though, Canet took second in Germany… so it looks like another shot at that maiden Moto2™ win.

After a tougher run at times though, Vietti will be happy to have been back setting the pace and reasserting his authority in the standings. Ai Ogura (Idemitsu Honda Team Asia), in turn, had a tougher race as the likes of Augusto Fernandez (Red Bull KTM Ajo) and Jake Dixon (GASGAS Aspar Team) were in the battle to complete the podium… can the Japanese rider fight back?

Home hero Marcel Schrötter (Liqui Moly Intact GP), meanwhile, is on a solid run of speed with some consistent top fives in 2022, just missing that podium. Can he challenge for it on home soil? We’ll find out as the lights go out for Moto2™ at the Liqui Moly Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland at 12:20 (GMT +2)!

Moto2™ CHAMPIONSHIP: TOP 3

3 Aron Canet (Flexbox HP 40) – Kalex – 109

Moto3™ ready to go full gas in Germany

Tight, twisty and sometimes throwing up a different kind of Moto3™ showdown, the Sachsenring awaits

What was 28 points is now just 16 as Moto3™ heads for Germany, with Izan Guevara (GASGAS Aspar Team) now within a third place of teammate Sergio Garcia as the latter continues to lead the fight for the crown. Now the tight and twisty Sachsenring awaits, where Garcia took some solid points last season in the front group and Guevara, then a rookie, headed the second group completing the top ten. What will await in 2022?

Dennis Foggia (Leopard Racing) will likely be a key challenger, with a podium at the track last year and coming in from some great speed only dented by a technical issue on race day in Barcelona. Teammate Tatsuki Suzuki is also on a roll of form. Meanwhile Jaume Masia (Red Bull KTM Ajo) will, like Foggia, want more from Germany, the Spaniard having only taken eighth last time out and losing some ground.

The track is such that the veterans and those who unlock the secrets of the Sachsenring have more chance to pull away than at many venues, so it could be a classic showdown for some seriously valuable points. Who will head into Assen with the advantage? We’ll find out on Sunday at 11:00 (GMT +2), so make sure to tune in!

Moto3™ CHAMPIONSHIP: TOP 3

1 Sergio Garcia (GASGAS Aspar Team) – GASGAS – 150

2 Izan Guevara (GASGAS Aspar Team) – GASGAS – 134

3 Jaume Masia (Red Bull KTM Ajo) – KTM – 103

Dale Quarterley Takes Third In ARCA Stock Car Race At Sonoma Raceway

Former AMA Superbike racer Dale Quarterley finished third in the ARCA Menards Series General Tire 200 stock car race June 11 at Sonoma Raceway, in Sonoma, California.

Driving a Van Dyk Recycling Solutions/Motul Chevrolet, Quarterley, age 61, finished 0.678 second behind runner-up Colby Howard and only 1.052 seconds behind winner – and series point leader – Jake Drew at the end of the 56-lap race.

The race was stopped eight laps short and while under caution due to “time constraints” during the NASCAR weekend, according to the ARCA Series website.

It was Quarterley’s best finish in the series since he took second place in a race at Irwindale Speedway in 2004.

WorldSBK: Vierge To Undergo Surgery On Right Hand

Xavi Vierge to undergo surgery to his right hand on Thursday

After injuring his right hand in a racing incident that occurred during the second WorldSBK race at the Misano World Circuit on June 12, Xavi Vierge has undergone further medical tests this morning as planned.

The examinations, carried out by Dr. Xavi Mir at the Hospital Universitario Quirón Dexeus in Barcelona, Spain, have confirmed six fractures to the rider’s right hand, two of which require surgery.

The two bones in question are the third metacarpal bone and the hamate bone, which will be operated on by Dr. Mir and his team on Thursday. The surgery will not be done any earlier because it is important to wait three days to be sure that Xavi is suffering no consequences from the blow to the head that he suffered in the fall.

Team HRC wishes Xavi a speedy recovery and a timely return to the track.

Further updates to follow.

Canadian Superbike: Race Two Results From Grand Bend Motorplex

CSBK - Pro Superbike - Race 2 Results (Sunday)

More, from a press release issued by CSBK/Professional Motorsports Productions:

Young dominates race two to sweep the CSBK opener at Grand Bend

Grand Bend, ON – Ben Young followed up his season opening performance with another victory in the Canadian Superbike Championship on Sunday, sweeping the Pro Superbike doubleheader to grab an early points lead exiting the Grand Bend Motorplex.

After a hard-fought victory on Saturday that featured a four-rider battle at the front, Young was left with only one challenger on Sunday as defending champion Alex Dumas grabbed the holeshot off a terrific launch.

Dumas would pace the opening five laps with Young close behind, but a move seemed inevitable as Young attempted a trio of passes into turn one. The Van Dolder’s Home Team BMW rider finally got a strong drive onto the front straight on lap six, and made the decisive move into turn one before opening up a comfortable gap at the front.

A second victory in as many days for the Collingwood, ON native will give him a 14-point lead atop the feature standings, a crucial result as they head to Calabogie for round two next month – a track Dumas has yet to lose at in his CSBK career.

“Alex was buzzing off the line, but I had a few good first laps behind him and knew I could check out a bit if I put my head down and hit the front,” Young said. “The headwind made it really tough, and I kept seeing the gap stay the same, but my Van Dolder’s Home Team BMW was great again all weekend.”

The result will have special meaning for Young, as not only does it propel him into a tie for tenth all-time on the Pro Superbike wins list (with Francis Martin), but it also gives BMW their 50th win as a manufacturer in the feature class and a nine-point lead in the Constructors Championship in the process.

As for Dumas, it’s a mixed bag weekend that will see the reigning title winner without a win after two races, though he will still leave Grand Bend with a pair of second-place finishes aboard his Liqui Moly Fast School Suzuki.

“I had a really good start – a lot better than yesterday – and I tried to pull away early, but Ben just had more pace in the end,” Dumas said. “From there I just tried to be smart and pick up as many points for the championship. It’s a long season, so we’re already looking forward to Calabogie.”

Trevor Daley returned to the podium for the first time this season after another strong late-season charge, overcoming a scary moment early on to place his OneSpeed Suzuki in third behind a brilliant late pass on Steven Nickerson.

“It was another grind at the end, I made a few more mistakes at the start and ran off the track in the carousel, but I was able to climb back up through the pack,” Daley said. “We had the pace to be here all weekend, so hopefully we can build on that in the future. It’s also great to have two Suzuki’s on the box again, three podiums this weekend between me and Alex will hopefully help build towards another Constructors title.”

Nickerson would battle through persistent pain to tie his career-best finish of fourth, capping off an admirable weekend for the Dewildt Powerhouse Honda rider as he fights lingering knee issues from 2021. The pair of top-five performances will lift Honda to third in the Constructors table behind BMW and Suzuki, their highest ranking since the introduction of the award last season.

Local hero Trevor Dion wrapped up his breakout weekend with a solid fifth-place finish for the LDS Consulting BMW team, following up his historic podium and pole position as he exits his home race third in the overall Superbike standings.

The weekend-long battle between Quebec natives Sebastian Tremblay and Sam Guerin was tied up on Sunday, as Guerin got the better of his budding rival in sixth aboard his EFC Group BMW, with Tremblay settling for seventh on his ST Motorsport Kawasaki.

David MacKay had a statement win of his own in the Pro ranks on Sunday, scoring his first career National victory in the Liqui Moly Pro Sport Bike class after leading start-to-finish aboard his Fast Company Kawasaki.

MacKay looked like the man to beat on Saturday before crashing out, but wouldn’t allow the same to happen on Sunday as he held off a race-long push from Will Hornblower, beating his regional rival and friend by just 0.17 seconds across the line.

“I’m so glad for that race to be over,” MacKay said after capturing his long-awaited first victory. “I’m really enjoying this moment. I knew I had to come back swinging after yesterday, but it’s a long season so hopefully this gives us some momentum back heading to round two.”

Hornblower also made up for a race one crash of his own with a strong second-place finish, keeping himself in the championship hunt aboard his Yamaha Financial Services machine, but the winner of the weekend will be Dion, who exits with a 12-point championship lead aboard his LDS Consulting Kawasaki.

Dion was “doing the double” in the Pro ranks as he contested all four races in round one, and a third-place finish on Sunday was enough to give him a slim title lead over Elliott Vieira, who managed a strong fourth on Sunday aboard his Snow City Yamaha.

Julien Lafortune stormed to an opening-round victory in the AIM Insurance Amateur Superbike class, leading the opening stint before a red-flag stoppage but following up on the restart with a dramatic flag-to-finish win.

Pole-sitter Marc Labossiere ran behind Lafortune in the early going before crashing out, handing second to weekend standout Nathan Playford with East-coast star John Fraser completing the podium.

Playford was the bridesmaid again in the Amateur Sport Bike race, leading for much of the late stages but conceding the victory to local rival Sebastian Hothaza, who made a daring move in the final carousel to narrowly win across the line.

Hothaza and Playford were joined by Paul Etienne Courtois on the podium, who had a terrific debut weekend in the Amateur ranks after stepping up from the Lightweight grid this season.

Evan Morarity completed the sweep in the Super Sonic Race School Lightweight class, winning again on Sunday after a brief challenge from local youngster Bryce DeBoer.

Moriarity’s championship bid will be helped by an unfortunate disqualification going the way of DeBoer, who was penalized for running the wrong fuel after failing post-race tech inspection. Promoted to second in his place was Justin Marshall, who also moves to the runner-up spot in the overall standings, while Grant Nesbitt was also promoted to the final podium place.

Jared Walker was the overall winner once again in the Pro/Am class, dominating across the line to extend his lead in the Pro division ahead of fourth-place finisher Istvan Hidvegi. Vincent Wilson was the top Amateur on track ahead of Nesbitt, with Wilson taking just a single-point lead over Nesbitt in the final tally.

The full weekend results can be found on the series’ official website.

JuniorGP: Rueda Wins A Pair At Catalunya

Editorial Notes: Canadian Torin Collins, riding his AGR Team KTM, finished 21st in both JuniorGP Race One and Race Two. American Kristian Daniel Jr., riding his IGAX Team Honda, finished 23rd in the lone European Talent Cup race.

A day of outstanding doubles in Barcelona

Rueda and Agius walk away with two wins from two as Uriarte pips Esteban to victory in the Hawkers ETC

It was double delight for both Jose Rueda (Team Estrella Galicia 0,0) and Senna Agius (Promoracing) in the JuniorGP™ and Moto2™ European Championship classes respectively as the Spaniard and Australian strung perfect races together in Round 3 of the Finetwork FIM JuniorGP™ World Championship at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Brian Uriarte (Team Estrella Galicia 0,0) emerged victorious in the only Hawkers European Talent Cup race of the day after a great battle with Joel Esteban (Aspar Junior Team).

In Race 1, Rueda took the lead at Turn 3 and never looked back in the opening race of the day. The Spaniard was untouchable and won by 11.3s as the battle for the podium raged behind. Second place eventually went the way of Syarifuddin Azman (SIC Racing) who claimed his first podium since his Barcelona win in 2021, as a late charge from Filippo Farioli (Aspar Junior Team) saw him beat Angel Piqueras (Team Estrella Galicia 0,0) and David Salvador (Laglisse Academy) to the final podium spot.

Race 2 followed the same sort of script. Rueda didn’t get the holeshot but by Turn 3 he was leading the race and again, the number 99 cruised to a third straight JuniorGP™ win. The fight for the podium went down the wire again with Azman taking P2 and Farioli snatching P3 from Piqueras on the run to the line to make it the same podium we saw in Race 1. Rueda’s double victory sees him take a 39-point lead over Salvador into Round 4.

The first Moto2™ ECh race treated us to an intriguing battle between Agius and polesitter Lukas Tulovic (Liqui Moly Intact JuniorGP Team). Tulovic led for the most part until a mistake at Turn 9 with two laps to go allowed Agius to swoop through – and the young Australian held on for his first Moto2™ victory. Alex Escrig (Yamaha Philippines Stylobike Team) completed the Race 1 podium, with Eric Fernandez (Team Speed Racing) taking the Stock win.

In the second race, Tulovic – like he did in the first – got a good start and took an early advantage. But once again, after making a small error at Turn 9, Agius pounced and this time, with plenty of laps left on the clock, the Aussie pulled clear and claimed a dominant victory. After a great battle with Escrig that went to the final corner, Alex Toledo (Pertamina Mandalika SAG Euvic) managed to pick up his maiden podium in third. Fernandez won the Stock race in the afternoon to make it two from two.

In the Hawkers ETC, the race for victory came down to Uriarte vs Esteban. Esteban led into the final corner but Uriarte was able to get a superior run to the line to win for the first time this season, beating Esteban by just 0.014s. Reigning Champion Maximo Martinez (Team Honda Laglisse) claimed the final podium spot in third for his second rostrum on the spin.

That’s it from Barcelona! Round 4 takes us to the world famous Circuito de Jerez-Angel Nieto at the start of July.
