Granado, Casadei and Ferrari lock out the front row

The second, fourth and third riders in the standings get ready to launch ahead of Aegerter

Friday, 19 August 2022

The FIM Enel MotoE™ World Cup has resumed after its summer break and Eric Granado has secured a much-needed first pole position of the season at the CryptoDATA Motorrad Grand Prix von Österreich. The LCR E-Team rider is second in the standings, with just two rounds left to try and overtake Dominique Aegerter (Dynavolt Intact GP MotoE™), and the 1:41.390 which he set in Q2 at the Red Bull Ring gives him the best possible chance of doing so. Joining Granado on the front row will be Mattia Casadei (Pons Racing 40) and Matteo Ferrari (Felo Gresini MotoE™), while Aegerter is set to get away from fifth position in both of this weekend’s races.

After a mixed morning of weather in Spielberg, sunny conditions greeted the MotoE™ field for qualifying on Friday afternoon. Granado kicked off Q2 with a 1:42.024 which was quickest at that point, and consolidated provisional pole with a 1:41.390 next time through. Casadei set a 1:41.530 on his second flyer to be second-fastest, but neither of those two could relax.

Ferrari was continuing to improve and gradually got his time down to a 1:41.569 with a handful of minutes remaining in the decisive stanza, to be third when the chequered flag came out. A host of riders then set quick sectors in a final bid for pole position, but there would be no further changes to the front row.

Row 2, on the other hand, was firmly still in play. Kevin Zannoni (Ongetta SIC58 Squadra Corse) had only got himself out of Q1 with a very late effort to top that session, and did something similar at the end of Q2 when he vaulted himself from eighth to fourth with a 1:41.596. It was also a significant lap in the context of the title race, considering it pushed World Cup leader Aegerter back to fifth position, the Swiss rider having gone as good as a 1:41.642. Joining them on the second row of the grid will be Niccolo Canepa, who rode his WithU GRT RNF MotoE™ Team entry to a 1:42.029.

Xavi Cardelus (Avintia Esponsorama Racing) was second-quickest out of Q1 and would ultimately claim seventh on the starting grid, ahead of Miquel Pons (LCR E-Team), Alex Escrig (Tech3 E-Racing), and Hector Garzo (Tech3 E-Racing). Jordi Torres (Pons Racing 40) was a surprise omission from the top 10 having missed the cut by 0.059 seconds in Q1 and will line up on the middle of Row 4, between Garzo and Hikari Okubo (Avant Ajo MotoE™). Bradley Smith (WithU GRT RNF MotoE™ Team) qualified 16th while Alessio Finello (Felo Gresini MotoE™) has been declared unfit after suffering a fractured metatarsal in his right foot when he crashed in FP1, meaning he will take no further part in the weekend.

With the top four in the FIM Enel MotoE™ World Cup standings all qualifying in the top five in Austria, the stage is set for another battle royale in the electric class. Catch Race 1 on Saturday afternoon from 16:25 (GMT +2)!

Eric Granado: “I’m very happy, we did a great job today in wet conditions and dry too. Finally, in this last session, I could do clean riding. I was a little bit not on the rhythm in the first session in the dry conditions, and also in the new chicane I was not with the flow. Now, I could have a good feeling and I improved a lot on my lap time from the morning, so I’m very happy. We have accomplished the first mission – the target was the front row and finally I have my first pole position of the season, so I’m very happy. I want to continue on this way throughout the weekend, try to score the maximum points possible, and continue chasing our dream of arriving at the last race with the possibility to win. So, happy and let’s go like this tomorrow.”

WAMPUM, PA (August 19, 2022) – Broken bones be damned. Westby Racing’s Mathew Scholtz showed that he could put the pain of his recently broken left wrist behind him to earn provisional pole position for this weekend’s two Medallia Superbike races that will headline the Superbikes At Pittsburgh, Presented by LaRoche Aviation Services, round at the Pittsburgh International Race Complex.

Scholtz lapped at 1:40.927 to lead Q1 with the South African the only rider to dip into the 1:40s on a warm, sunny day out the outskirts of Pittsburgh, despite riding with the broken wrist suffered three weeks ago in Minnesota.

Though he said the wrist wasn’t that bothersome when riding, Scholtz knows that one lap isn’t the same as race distance, which in this instance is 17 laps for each of the two races.

Warhorse HSBK Racing Ducati NYC’s Danilo Petrucci came the closest to Scholtz with the Italian a scant .303 of a second off provisional pole just .041 of a second ahead of the man he is fighting for the championship – Fresh N Lean Progressive Yamaha Racing’s Jake Gagne. Petrucci’s best, a 1:41.230, came on his 12th lap with Gagne’s 1:41.271 coming on his seventh lap.

Gagne’s teammate Cameron Petersen was on the same second as Scholtz in fourth as was Tytlers Cycle Racing’s Hector Barbera in fifth, .768 off Scholtz’s best.

Yuasa Stock 1000 – Alexander Strikes First

Tytlers Cycle/RideHVMC Racing’s Corey Alexander ended Friday on top of the timesheets in the class in which he leads the championship – Yuasa Stock 1000. Alexander ripped off a 1:43.171 to lead his teammate Travis Wyman by just .077 of a second.

Disrupt Racing’s Hayden Gillim, meanwhile, is the man chasing Alexander in the point standings and he was only .198 of a second behind his rival in third place. Cycle World/Octane/Chuckwalla Racing’s Andrew Lee ended up fourth fastest as he continues to fill in for the injured Michael Gilbert.

Mesa37 Racing’s Stefano Mesa was fifth fastest on opening day and just a tick over a second off Alexander’s best.

REV’IT! Twins Cup – Davis On Top

N2 Racing/BobbleHeadMoto’s Blake Davis led the way in the first qualifying session for the REV’IT! Twins Cup class at Pitt Race, the 16-year-old barely besting defending class champion Kaleb De Keyrel in a Yamaha vs. Aprilia duel. The difference between the two? A mere .083 of a second.

Robem Engineering’s Ben Gloddy and Veloce Racing’s Jody Barry rounded out the top five on day one.

Barry, who is one point behind Anthony Mazziotto in the battle for the REV’IT! Twins Cup title, ended day one with the advantage as Mazziotto was 10th in Friday’s session after a difficult day with mechanical ills.

Supersport – Landers Over Herrin

Landers Racing’s Rocco Landers is doing everything he can this weekend to prevent Warhorse HSBK Racing Ducati NYC’s Josh Herrin from wrapping up the title at Pittsburgh International Race Complex.

Although Herrin winning the title is a foregone conclusion, Landers would like to make him wait and he started the weekend on the right foot by leading Q1 on Friday. Landers lapped at a best of 1:43.906 – .288 faster than Herrin.

Four-time AMA Superbike Champion Josh Hayes ended the day third fastest on his N2 Racing/BobbleHeadMoto Yamaha YZF-R6, but a tick over a second slower than Landers. North East Cycle Outlet Racing’s Benjamin Smith and Vision Wheel M4 ECSTAR Suzuki’s Tyler Scott rounded out the top five in Q1.

SportbikeTrackGear.com Junior Cup – Wyman On Top

Alpha Omega’s Cody Wyman showed why he’s leading the SportbikeTrackGear.com Junior Cup Championship as he led Q1 by almost half a second on Friday at Pitt Race.

Wyman logged a 1:55.863 to best Rodio Racing/Warhorse HSBK Racing’s Gus Rodio and Bauce Racing/JL62 Team’s Joe LiMandri Jr. Bad Boys Racing’s Avery Dreher and SportbikeTrackGear.com’s Max Van rounded out the top five.

Royal Enfield Build. Train. Race – On Your Buyck

Championship points leader Kayleigh Buyck was the best of the women racers in the Royal Enfield Build. Train. Race. second practice session on Friday with her 2:11.892.

Buyck led Jennifer Chancellor by .430 of a second with Chloe Peterson ending the session third to complete the provisional front row for Sunday’s race.

Sunnyvale, Calif., August 19, 2022 – Danilo Petrucci (Warhorse HSBK Racing Ducati NYC) ended the first day of racing action at the 2.78-mile Pittsburgh International Race Complex second overall, logging a best time of 1:41.230, 0.303-seconds off pacesetter Mathew Scholtz (Yamaha).

Petrucci has previous experience at PittRace, having completed the WERA Endurance event with HSBK Supersport teammate, Josh Herrin, last week, but admits the rigors of the Panigale V4 are somewhat different to those of the Supersport V2 on which he competed last week.

Regardless, Petrucci ended the day ahead of chief title rival Jake Gage (Yamaha) after completing 18 laps on Friday and is ready to mount a pole position attack in Q2 tomorrow morning.

Qualifying 1 Results – Top 5

P1 – Mathew Scholtz (Yamaha) 1:40.927

P2 – Danilo Petrucci (Ducati) 1:41.230

P3 – Jake Gagne (Yamaha) 1:41.271

P4 – Cameron Petersen (Yamaha) 1:41.672

P5 – Hector Barbera (BMW) 1:41.695

Danilo Petrucci (Warhorse HSBK Racing Ducati NYC – #9): “It was a challenging first day,” Petrucci said. “We need to find a more optimum set-up for our bike. We were here last week with the Panigale V2 in the endurance race and, for sure, it was an easier task than with the V4. With the bigger bike, it needs a bit more time to nail the right setting. Pole position will be critical tomorrow, so we have some work to do tonight to ensure we are in the right position to capitalize.”

Petrucci hits the track tomorrow at 10:15 am EDT for Qualifying 2, with race one scheduled for 3:10 pm EDT. Race two will kick off at 3:10 EDT on Sunday, August 21.

This weekend marks Herrin’s first chance at taking the 2022 MotoAmerica Supersport title. The Californian former MotoAmerica Superbike and Superstock champion knows he can’t get overwhelmed by the opportunity to join some rarefied air as a champion of three different AMA categories.

Qualifying 1 Results – Top 5

We’ll go back and do some work tonight to find those extra two-tenths we need and hopefully the races go well.”

Herrin will be out on track tomorrow (Saturday, August 20), with Qualifying 2 scheduled for 10:55 am EDT. Race one will be held on Saturday, August 20 at 2:10 pm EDT and race two will go green on Sunday, August 21 at 2:10 pm EDT.

Sunnyvale, Calif., August 19, 2022 – Josh Herrin (Warhorse HSBK Racing Ducati NYC) completed 25 laps of the picturesque 2.78-mile Pittsburgh International Race Complex to finish the day second to Yamaha’s Rocco Landers.

Herrin topped FP1 by 0.304 seconds to Landers, who responded with a 0.288 advantage over Herrin in Q1, the two riders one second clear of the chasing pack headed by Yamaha’s Josh Hayes.

This weekend marks Herrin’s first chance at taking the 2022 MotoAmerica Supersport title. The Californian former MotoAmerica Superbike and Superstock champion knows he can’t get overwhelmed by the opportunity to join some rarefied air as a champion of three different AMA categories.

Josh Herrin (Warhorse HSBK Racing Ducati NYC): “Friday here at Pittsburgh, we ended first in the FP1 session and second in Qualifying 1, and I’m happy with our pace,” Herrin said. “We can do the lap times, so that’s all good, but I’m a little disappointed because I always want to be the fastest! We’ll go back and do some work tonight to find those extra two-tenths we need and hopefully the races go well.”
