Nash’s Team Gets Official Ducati Sponsorship For F-USA And AMA Series

0

Ducati today “re-issued” a press release announcing AMA-Ducati Performance Racing, which means Jeff Nash’s team is now officially Ducati-sponsored. The release was dated March 22 but we never received a copy, and, judging by the AMS team’s last-minute arrival at Willow Springs last weekend, the deal was news to them, too, until a few days before the Willow F-USA race. The release reads as follows:

“Ducati North America will sponsor 2000 AMA Pro Thunder Champion Jeff Nash and former Australian Superbike rider Craig Connell in competition this season.

“Ducati North America has formed an association with current AMA Pro Thunder Champion and 2001 Daytona winner Jeff Nash and Advanced Motor Sports, to compete in this year’s Pro Thunder Championship. Riding under the Ducati Performance banner, Jeff will compete on 2001 model 748RS’s prepared by AMS’s Superbike gurus Arthur Davis and Stewart Rust. ‘It is a great honor to be involved with Ducati’s racing program this season. Hopefully we will be able to fulfill their high expectations.’

“Asked about his win at Daytona, ‘I’m totally thrilled, I’ve got a great crew, it’s my best victory ever and a dream come true to win at Daytona for Ducati. I let (fellow Ducati rider) Thomas Montano through going into the infield and I thought those guys might give me a bit of a draft to pass them both before the chicane, which worked quite well. I made a block move coming into the chicane and got a good drive coming out.’ This was Ducati’s third consecutive Pro Thunder win at Daytona.

“In SFX Formula USA, former Ducati Australia Superbike rider Craig Connell will compete on Ducati Performance AMS 996SPS’s prepared by Nash and his crew. Connell, who finished second in the first leg at Daytona and was leading prior to a red flag, is a Superbike veteran. Finishing second and third in the Australian Superbike Championship in two consecutive years and finishing eighth and ninth in two consecutive years World Superbike rounds contested in Australia. ‘My bike was great, considering it never turned a wheel until Friday, was down about 15 horsepower to everyone else, and I had never been to Daytona. This will give us a lot of momentum going to Willow Springs which is a track I know pretty well.’

“Unfortunately due to both weather and darkness, the race was not restarted and results from the second race were the ones left standing, which put Connell comfortably in the second position over all in the series. ‘Jeff and Craig rode a great races, and the Pro Thunder race was probably the best ever,’ stated Ducati Manager of Racing Operations David Roy. ‘Both Jeff and Craig are great competitors, having raced against them both last season. Their dedication will lend a lot to our programs in both the AMA and F-USA series.'”

The official team name is Ducati Performance AMS Racing.

More Contributions Push Air Fence Fund To $104,170

New contributions have pushed the Roadracing World Air Fence Fund to $104,170 for the purchase, transportation, deployment and maintenance of Air Fence/Air Modules for our brave racers across the country.

New contributions Thursday afternoon included $400 from Jon Rust, $330 from Pirelli racetrack distributor Jerry Jirkovsky, $300 from Richard Hood/Reptillian Racing, $250 from John Ross/Ross Racing, $200 from Jodie York/RPM Cycles Ventura/WSMC #11, $100 from John Light/Lightsmith Racing, $100 from Ken & Arlene Block (Ed Sorbo’s Mom), $50 from James Aragon and $50 from James Hayton/Kochenbaulz Racing/WERA BBS.

Along with the latest round of donations came a few notes and letters, as follows:

James Hayton/Kochenbaulz Racing/WERA BBS:
“Thanks. Check will go out first post tomorrow. Keep up the good work – hope this gets you to 100K!”

Scott Cloninger /ICR Chattanooga, TN/ former CCS racer and avid fan of the sport:
“I just wanted you to know how thankful I am that you initiated the fundraising effort to install Air Fences at AMA events. I know that when our group (the Intrepid Cafe Racers of Chattanooga, TN) learned of the effort we were quick to act and we learned that $50 here and $50 there adds up quickly. I didn’t realize, however, how many people are truly concerned over the safety and well-being of American racers. I just finished reading through the list of contributors and I was deeply touched at the length of the list and the monetary outpouring of support for this cause. Hell, I nearly cried when I saw Don Emde’s contribution in memory of Cal Rayborn!

“Race organizers should take a greater role in the safety of riders, as should track owners and other sanctioning bodies. In the final calculation, though, it is the riders themselves who have the greatest say in their own safety. Riders often ride at unsafe tracks for points, or for money, or for trophys, but the majority of riders race for the enjoyment of the sport. The riders’ enjoyment of the sport is often spoiled, or at least diminished, by staring at concrete abutments and Armco barriers while racing at full tilt. I think if Roadracing World would push a grass roots boycott of unsafe facilities maybe the aforementioned second parties might spend a few of their precious bucks to attend to the safety of participants, and maybe tragedies like the one that befell Cal and hundreds of others might be avoided in the future. Just my humble opinion.”

Max McAllister, President, Traxxion Dynamics, Inc.:
“Roadracing World has allowed me the frequent opportunity to stand on a soapbox and prod racers as a community to take action to cover their own butts and make the places they race safer. I want people to know how I feel about the racing community as a whole. Not four years ago, no one had heard of Traxxion Dynamics because it didn’t exist. With a great deal of hard work and your support, I have a growing business as a result of the racing community. When I stand at the pitwall and see such a saturation of my company’s decals on the forks of the competitors, I am very proud. But I also realize that the odds are high
that if someone is hurt, it will be a friend of mine, and a customer of my business. Such is the case with Jamie Bowman and Dirk Piz. I’m not Dunlop or Honda, they have several more zeros in their gross income than my company does, but I want you to know that I am giving back all I can to make sure that I will have the same friends and customers when the 2005 model bikes come out! See you at the track.”

Allen Lyon:
“What you have achieved with your Air Fence fund drive is amazing. I admire you for having this creative idea and knowing how to put it into action. It’s easy to get caught up in the rhetoric of bureaucracy. It’s thoroughly refreshing to see someone get outside the box and do things a new and better way. This rapid deployment of the fences for the upcoming races is a significant step in protecting racers. Good work!”

Richard Hood/ Reptilian Racing:
“Just a quick note: I called in and donated $300 to the fund. My rider(s) safety comes first and a small donation to a good is well worth every penny. If you had waited around for the AMA to secure the budget and funding for the fence, this would have never happened. Thank you for taking the initiative and circling the wagons for this cause.”

Jodie York/RPM Cycles Ventura? WSMC #11:
“John – Thank you for NOT being a good, quiet little cow and minding your place in the herd. This is fabulous what you are MAKING happen. We wanted to say ‘Bravo!’ and add our contribution to this necessary cause. Thanks for looking out for your fellow racers, John. Good on YOU, sir.”

Mladin’s Back In The U.S., Will Test Monday At Pahrump

0

Mat Mladin’s publicist issued this press release Thursday, April 26:

“Defending American Superbike Champion Mat Mladin has made a belated return to America where he will resume preparations for the second round of the AMA Chevy Trucks U.S. Superbike Championship which is scheduled for Sears Point Raceway in Sonoma, California on
Sunday May 4-6.

“Mladin was due to return to America more than two weeks ago, but a motocross training accident on the morning he was to fly out, left the two-time Champion with a broken left fibula. Taking specialists’ advice, Mladin did not have the break plated, instead opting for natural healing, given that there was sufficient time before Sears Point for the injury to heal. Mladin suffered a severe break in the same area of his ankle in January 1995 and doctors were concerned that any surgery may attract a return of the infections which threatened the mobility of his foot.

“‘As far as the ankle goes, everything is fine,’ Mladin said, before leaving Sydney. ‘I actually did a full moto on the motocross bike yesterday morning and it felt fine. There is a bit of soreness with the achilles, but that is all. I don’t think it will be a problem at Sears Point.’

“On arrival back in California, Mladin is scheduled to test his Team Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R750 at the Pahrump circuit in Nevada on Monday, before the team packs up and heads to Sears Point.

“Mladin heads to Sears Point as the defending race winner (in 1999) and also the Championship leader after taking victory at the Daytona 200 in March. Last year’s (Sears Point) round was cancelled due to poor drainage at the Sonoma circuit after days of torrential rain.

“‘It’s been seven weeks between Daytona and Sears, so I’m looking forward to getting back on the bike and winning again,’ Mladin added. ‘Track safety is always an issue so I hope we don’t have a repeat of what happened there last year and what also happened at the Phillip Island round of the SWC (Superbike World Championship) last weekend. I hope that the track owners have done enough work around there to make sure it doesn’t happen again.'”

New Donations From Dunlop And Traxxion Push Air Fence Fund To $98,925

New donations of $2900 each from Dunlop Tire Corporation and Max McAllister/Traxxion Dynamics boosted our Air Fence fund up to $98,925 late Wednesday afternoon. Other new contributions included $300 from James Siddall/World Sports/Corbin Grand Prix, $250 each from Scott Fisher/Fisher Technical Services, Chris Pyles & Beth Walters, and Peter Hively, and $150 from Ed and Catherine Sorbo. More $100 donations came in from Giorgio Milesi/Galfer Brakes USA, Al Lyons/CMRRA, Linda Hopkins, John Hopkins/In Memory of Jamie Bowman and Toby Jorgensen, Vicky & Michael Menard, Silvia Salenius/Ducati.net Online, HG Racing/AMA Pro Thunder and C.R. “Critter” Gittere/WERA BBS. Bob Elam kicked in $30 while Ted Angle, Susanne Hopkins and Nolan Ballew each sent $25.

Some sent notes with their contributions, including these:

Giorgio Milesi/Galfer Brakes USA: “Once again Roadracing World rescues and shows that it cares for this sport.”

Peter Hively: “Thanks, John, for taking the bull by the horns.”

Kirk Erlinger, AHRMA #257, MZ Sport Cup: “In regard to the AMA, it’s like my father used to say, ‘They’re more horses asses than horses!’ I’d like to contribute $25 to go along with the MZ Sport Cup Racers donation! Way to get this rolling and accomplished!”

Previous donor Aaron Loyd wrote: “I’ve been following the Air Fence fund-raising effort with interest. Made my donation early and noted with pride the donations coming from other members of Colorado’s MRA. I have two observations and a couple questions regarding the involvement of the major motorcycle manufacturers.

“First, keeping the barriers in Roadracing World’s control so that it could be used at both AMA and Formula USA events seems to provide the most benefit to racers. Second, I support the idea that the AMA sell or lease its racing program to FormulaUSA. Presumably, the AMA would know how to structure a lease agreement such that Formula USA could not do to the AMA what the AMA did to Roger Edmondson. A leasing agreement would allow the AMA to keep its name associated with racing and provide a steady stream of income to fund the good work the AMA does in protecting motorcyclist’s rights.

“Lastly, I’ve noted the donations from Buell, Aprilia, Ducati, Erion Racing and Suzuki. I’ve also noted the lack of donations from Honda, Yamaha and Kawasaki. I wonder why the manufacturers are not more vocal about safety issues? What if Mat Mladin had hit the pace car at Daytona, or Nicky Hayden had been injured when he crashed on oil that was known to be on the track? One would think the manufacturers would care about the personal safety of their racers but at the very least would be concerned about the loss of expensive and hard-to-find racing talent. The manufacturers would stand to gain the most from making motorcycle road racing more popular and safer. I’m curious about what the manufacturers are doing to influence the AMA into running a more professional effort?”

Previous donor Scott Turner wrote: “I am one of the contributors from the Intrepid Cafe Racers. I would like to dedicate my contribution to the memory of Toby Jorgensen. I was very much looking forward to watching his road racing talent develop. His death was extremely saddening and likely preventable.

“I hope that you can find some way, with your full schedule, to extend this ‘safety crusade’ to include the AMA Pro Flat Trackers. I know they are scheduled to race on a few very marginally safe racetracks. Oval tracks present a more difficult problem of acceptable safety levels and I don’t expect the AMA to do a damn thing. Maybe you can! Thanks.”

This note came from HG Racing: “HG Racing (Richard Haas and Dale Gullicksen), a small AMA Pro Thunder team based in the SF Bay area, would like to pledge $100 to the fund. We commend your efforts in protecting our racers. It’s frightening to realize that the safety of our tracks in the U.S. is some 30 years behind the rest of the world. Europe went through safety issues like this in the 1970s, until rebels like Kenny Roberts Senior spoke out, and things began to change. I was there, and want to be part of this, too.

“I wish that Air Fence could be up for Sears – one of the most dangerous tracks on the AMA circuit today! I’m encouraging our Team Partners to participate too. Some, like Steve Brubaker of Dunlop, and Jeff Nash of AMS, have already done the right thing.”

Suzuki Releases Contingency Program Details

0

This just in from Jeff Wilson of American Suzuki, regarding the 2001 Suzuki contingency program:

“The final draft of the Suzuki contingency brochure will be off to the printers Wednesday the 25th. If you want to let your readers know
some basic new stuff….

“Total posting is just short of $1.4 Million….

: There will be 60 Suzuki Cup Series events at most of the clubs; AFM, CMRA, CRA, CCS, GLRRA, LRRS, MRA, OMRRA, WMRRA, WERA Sportsman, WSMC. These will run primarily through the spring and summer months and the last points-paying round will be a CCS event at Gateway the 16th of September. We will pay at both the WERA GNF (Sportsman and Nat’l Challenge) in Atlanta and the
CCS Race of Champions in Daytona in October. We are posting $480,000 ($8000 per event) for these Suzuki Cup Series events in five classes….600, 750 and Open Superstock and classes for the SV650 and TL1000R. The points earned at these events will allow the rider to compete in the Suzuki Cup Final in October.

“The Suzuki Cup Final will be held October 23rd through the 28th in Atlanta at the WERA Grand National Final again. This year we will up the total payout to $80,000 for five classes. That is a $20,000 increase from 2000. The payout structure will change slightly to allow Suzuki to pay $500 to the 20th-place finisher in each of the three GSX-R classes and $250 for 20th place
in each of the two Twins classes.

“This year we will requiring at least 10 points to qualify for the Final. The heat races will still be run on Saturday for final grid postions to be determined with the exception of the front
rows. And this will be the Big Change. We will “lock” in the top points earner from each region to the front rows of the final event on Sunday; regardless, of his (or her) finish in the heat race. In other words, the fastest “top points earner” from the heat race will have the pole position for the final in each of the five classes.

“The National Level Contingency is about the same as last year with a few adjustments including increased payouts in AMA 600cc Supersport and Formula Xtreme. All of the same classes are eligible for contingency that we paid in
2000; AMA 600cc and 750cc Supersport, Formula Xtreme and Pro Thunder; F-USA Sportbike and Unlimited Superbike; WERA Nat’l Endurance and Nat’l Challenge.Total posting is $825,000.

“We have posted with all the clubs and each should have the ‘Suzuki Money’ days on their schedule now. We will honor results from races prior to the release of the brochure and registration form. Remember, each racer has to
submit a new registration form each year.

“The brochure is later than usual coming out this year and we apologize for that delay. It will be available at all of the clubs and the national events the first part of May. We will be mailing it to all of the 2000 participants and it should be available mid-May at the local Suzuki dealers.

“Good luck and good racing.”

Air Fence Fund Reaches $91,020 In Seven Days On The Web

New donations Tuesday afternoon brought our Air Fence contributions total to $91,020. Raising $91,020 in seven days off an internet site (www.roadracingworld.com)is something to be proud of, especially when that money is going for Air Fence modules to protect our racers. And the first modules will be ready to deploy at Road Atlanta on May 16, less than a month from now.

The latest donations were led by Performance Machine at $2900, followed by California Superbike School at $1000. Dr. Jim Adams and his sons James D. Adams and Justin Adams gave $1000 in the name of Tachyon Racing and the Tachyon Sports Injury Research Foundation. The Plummer Menapace Group sent $500. Racer Joshua Hayes came in at $250 and his manager Gina Nadeau sent another $250. More $100 donations came in from Adam Vella/Webcrush Racing, Chuck Gault/Motobama, Gary Longren and Stephan Hottenrott, while Kyle Kirschenmann/Bayou Riders of Louisiana sent $25.

“Keep up the good work” wrote Hottenrott, and all we can say in reply is, thank you for the fantastic effort. For those of you who have not donated, call and get involved. More Air Fence will only make racing better and safer for our racers. The small piece of Air Fence your contribution pays for may save your favorite rider!

Road America Joins Loudon And Willow Springs In Support Of Air Fence Project

0

In a Wednesday afternoon phone call to Roadracing World headquarters, Road America President and General Manager George Bruggenthies said that the Wisconsin racetrack will deploy Air Fence purchased by the Roadracing World fund raising drive.

“We’re willing to put it up,” Bruggenthies said. “Obviously, we want to make everything as safe as possible for the racers.”

Road America, located in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, is the third major racetrack to support our Air Fence fund-raising drive. New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon, New Hampshire and Willow Springs International Raceway in Rosamond, California have also expressed support for the project and have committed to deploying Air Fence purchased with funds raised by Roadracing World.

Nash’s Team Gets Official Ducati Sponsorship For F-USA And AMA Series
