Crevier Wins Canadian Superbike Opener At Shannonville

Reigning Canadian Superbike Champion Steve Crevier took a flag-to-flag win in the opening round of the Parts Canada Superbike Championship, held at Shannonville Motorsport Park in Ontario, Canada on Sunday, May 20.

Riding a Honda RC51, Crevier beat Owen Weichel on a Kawasaki ZX-7RR and Francis Martin on a Suzuki GSX-R1000.

Crevier and his CBR600F4i also beat Weichel and his ZX-6R in the Yoshimura 600 Sport Bike race at Shannonville, while Frank Trombino won the International Motorcycle Supershow Open Sport Bike race on a Yamaha YZF-R1.

AMA Pro Racing Superbike Operations Manager Ron Barrick accepted a giant ceremonial check for $104,000 from the Roadracing World Air Fence Fund just after 11:00 a.m. Sunday morning at Road Atlanta. Barrick was presented the check by Roadracing World’s John Ulrich.



Following the check ceremony, held at winner’s circle, several Air Fence Fund contributors autographed a section of Alpina Air Module in turn 12, including former Daytona 200 winner Don Emde, Chris Ulrich and Larry Pegram. Steve Rapp and Andreas Meklau signed on behalf of Ducati North America, which donated $2900 to the fund.

Ben Tidswell attended the ceremony and the signing on behalf of Alpina Safety Systems.

Donations are still being accepted for the fund, which will now obtain Air Fence for use at races sanctioned by organizations other than the AMA.

New donations received Sunday morning included $500 from American Honda’s Gary Christopher, $500 from Full Spectrum Design (manufacturer of Pit bull bike stands), $100 from Twin Cities Yamaha, and $200 from RPM, the WERA affiliate in the South-central region.

Grant Lopez’s sister, Sabrina, called in a $100 donation after reading about her brother’s harrowing crash into the Air Fence situated at the wall outside Road Atlanta’s turn 12.

Nicky Hayden crashed early in the race on lap six, continued, but had to retire on lap 10.

Mike Smith crashed under the bridge before turn 12. Smith’s Harley-Davidson VR1000 burst into a fireball on the old pit lane entrance. Smith walked away from the crash.

Pascal Picotte retired early with mechanical problems.

Suzuki scored a second sweep of the podium in as many days. Mladin, Yates, Eric Bostrom, and Hacking battled for the lead for the first half of the event on a dry track with threatening skies. Bostrom and Hacking faded back slightly as the race wore on. Yates challenged Mladin for the lead several times under braking for turn 10 and coming down the hill to turn 12, but Mladin held on for a 0.758-second margin of victory. Mat Mladin is the “Big Kahuna” for the second year in a row.

In the restarted event, which was red-flagged after seven laps on Saturday with an additional eight laps run on Sunday, Valvoline EMGO Suzuki’s Hopkins and Bruce Transportation’s Hayes went back and forth for several laps. Hopkins enjoyed a top speed advantage on the back straight and Hayes was faster from turn one to turn six. Hopkins made the pass for the lead with two laps to go.

Valvoline EMGO Suzuki’s Grant Lopez finished eighth, a good showing after dislocating his right shoulder on Friday in practice.

Jason Pridmore, whose crash caused the intial red flag, remained hospitalized with a badly broken leg. According to Pridmore’s Attack Suzuki teammate Rich Alexander, Pridmore will be out “for the rest of the season.”

Kawasaki’s Eric Bostrom simply checked out and won the Pro Honda Oils 600cc Supersport final by 2.7 seconds. Second place was fought over by as many as seven riders until traffic strung out the field.

Bostrom assumes the 600 point lead 95 to 94 over Anthony Gobert, followed by Miguel Duhamel at 87, Tommy Hayden at 75 and Josh Hayes at 74.

Having already been postponed from Saturday, the rescheduled start of the 750cc Supersport was aborted when rain began to fall at points on the back of the track. The leaders found the rain first. Ciccotto fell at the exit of turn 10, and Spies ran straight at the chicane. Competitors came past start/finish with their arms in the air calling for officials to stop the race.

After a 30-minute break for conditions to stabilize (dry out), the race was re-started. Ciccotto passed Alexander through turn three and led every lap with Ulrich initially second. Parriott worked his way to second but could do no better. Spies moved forward to Ulrich, and the pair had a terrific battle for third for several laps, with Ulrich ahead, then Spies passing, Ulrich repassing, then Spies regaining the advantage. The battle allowed Moore to close on the duo. Moore passed Ulrich on the back straight and closed on Spies, The pair rubbed Ulrich off in traffic, and Spies was able to hold on to the last podium spot. In the winner’s circle, Ciccotto dedicated the win to his fallen teammate, the late Jamie Bowman.

Fast moving thunderstorms that drenched Road Atlanta forced cancellation of the Roadracing World Air Fence Fund Contributor Party, originally scheduled to be held at the Ballzee trailer in the vendor area on the hill above the Pro paddock.

The 40 pizzas already en-route to the track were consumed by Air Fence Fund contributors who made their way into the Pro Paddock at Road Atlanta, along with cornerworkers.

An Air Fence autograph session has been scheduled for between 11:00 a.m. and 1:30. a.m. Sunday morning, weather permitting. Air Fence Fund contributors who wish to autograph a section of Air Fence should gather in the winner’s circle area at about 11:00 a.m.; contributors who are unable to get to the winner’s circle area to autograph a section of Air Fence will get another chance to autograph a section at a future Road Atlanta event.

Similar signing sessions will be held at other AMA Nationals throughout the rest of the racing season.

At 11:00 a.m., Roadracing World’s John Ulrich is scheduled to present AMA Pro Racing Superbike Operations Manager Ron Barrick with a giant ceremonial check made out to AMA Pro Racing in the amount of $104,000.

Roadracing World Air Fence Fund money in excess of the $104,000 given to AMA Pro Racing is being used to buy Air Fence for use at races sanctioned by other organizations.

Ciccotto Wins 750cc Supersport At Road Atlanta

Having already been postponed from Saturday, the rescheduled start of the 750cc Supersport was aborted when rain began to fall at points on the back of the track. The leaders found the rain first. Ciccotto fell at the exit of turn 10, and Spies ran straight at the chicane. Competitors came past start/finish with their arms in the air calling for officials to stop the race.

After a 30-minute break for conditions to stabilize (dry out), the race was re-started. Ciccotto passed Alexander through turn three and led every lap with Ulrich initially second. Parriott worked his way to second but could do no better. Spies moved forward to Ulrich, and the pair had a terrific battle for third for several laps, with Ulrich ahead, then Spies passing, Ulrich repassing, then Spies regaining the advantage. The battle allowed Moore to close on the duo. Moore passed Ulrich on the back straight and closed on Spies, The pair rubbed Ulrich off in traffic, and Spies was able to hold on to the last podium spot. In the winner’s circle, Ciccotto dedicated the win to his fallen teammate, the late Jamie Bowman.

Oliver Wins Road Atlanta 250cc Grand Prix

Rich Oliver won the 250cc Grand Prix race at Road Atlanta 13.774 seconds ahead of second-place Chuck Sorensen. Jimmy Filice was third.

Roland Sands’ Performance Machine Yamaha died on the first lap. Sands was able to get his TZ250 re-fired and finished 27th, five laps down, to salvage some Championship points.

Fast moving thunderstorms that drenched Road Atlanta forced cancellation of the Roadracing World Air Fence Fund Contributor Party, originally scheduled to be held at the Ballzee trailer in the vendor area on the hill above the Pro paddock.

The 40 pizzas already en-route to the track were consumed by Air Fence Fund contributors who made their way into the Pro Paddock at Road Atlanta, along with cornerworkers.

An Air Fence autograph session has been scheduled for between 11:00 a.m. and 1:30. a.m. Sunday morning, weather permitting. Air Fence Fund contributors who wish to autograph a section of Air Fence should gather in the winner’s circle area at about 11:00 a.m.; contributors who are unable to get to the winner’s circle area to autograph a section of Air Fence will get another chance to autograph a section at a future Road Atlanta event.

Similar signing sessions will be held at other AMA Nationals throughout the rest of the racing season.

At 11:00 a.m., Roadracing World’s John Ulrich is scheduled to present AMA Pro Racing Superbike Operations Manager Ron Barrick with a giant ceremonial check made out to AMA Pro Racing in the amount of $104,000.

Roadracing World Air Fence Fund money in excess of the $104,000 given to AMA Pro Racing is being used to buy Air Fence for use at races sanctioned by other organizations.
