Former racer Phil McDonald has been moved out of intensive care into a private room but faces another 6-8 weeks of hospitalization, followed by rehab.

McDonald was seriously injured in a streetbike crash May 21, when a truck pulled out of a parking lot and hit McDonald, sending him into the center median, where he hit a signpost.

McDonald is hospitalized at St. Francis Hospital, 6161 S. Yale, Tulsa, OK 74136.

He has already undergone surgery twice, including skin grafts, and faces additional surgery in which doctors will attempt to locate and reconnect severed nerves in his left arm.

In a call to roadracingworld.com today, Phil McDonald’s father Norm said that earlier posts about Phil’s crash had resulted in the family receiving e-mails of support from all over the world, and the family greatly appreciated it.

Aprilia At Laguna Seca

From a press release issued by Aprilia USA:

Aprilia Displays New Models and “Evil” Tuono at Laguna Seca

Woodstock, GA – Aprilia USA will display several new models at the Laguna Seca round of the World Superbike Championship / AMA Superbike series July 11-13th.

Two new-featured production models will be the Limited-Edition Colin Edwards Replica, and the highly anticipated Tuono Racing. Two new scooters for the US will be on display as well. The Mojito “cruiser scooter” and the Rally make their North American debut at the famous racing circuit near Monterey, CA.

Along side these production machines will be a special Tuono built by former Aprilia Cup Champion Aaron Clark. The RSV Tuono “Clarkie” features a built-up motor that includes performance parts from Blackmans Racing, Evoluzione, STM and Dynojet. The primary sponsor of the project is European Motorcycle Accessories. “EMA has supplied an Ohlins rear shock, PVM wheels and brakes, and Harris parts including adjustable rearsets and a slip-on exhaust system,” says Clark. “I basically took a standard Tuono that had a bad interaction with gravity, courtesy of a demo rider, and made it the most potent Tuono I could.”

As Clarks’ friends heard about the project more items such as carbon bodywork custom painted by Blair Graphix, and custom Ohlins Internal Showa fork from Scuderia West were fitted to the bike. Clark is currently touring the country as Demo Manager for Aprilia USA. “Between dealer open houses and demo events like Americade, I was building the bike in the trailer – the stock Tuono is already a beast – I wanted this one to be just plain evil,” says the native New Zealander.

Aprilia owners and fans are encouraged to stop by the Aprilia display in “Manufacturers Row” at the event to check out the latest Aprilia motorcycles and scooters, meet members of the Aprilia management team, and check out the latest Aprilia accessories and clothing.

Select members of the press will be allowed to ride the Tuono “Clarkie” after some final suspension tweaking at an Aprilia demo track day at Portland International Raceway on July 16th.

SPEED Programming VP: Two-wheel Tuesday To Stay, With Changes

0

Copyright 2003, Roadracing World Publishing, Inc.

Two-wheel Tuesdays will remain on SPEED Channel’s new programming schedule, although with changes, says SPEED Senior Vice-President of Programming and Production/Executive Producer Rick Miner.

In an interview with Roadracingworld.com, Miner said the biggest change Two-wheel Tuesday viewers will notice after SPEED’s new programming schedule starts August 4 is – like all of SPEED’s new prime time programming – the removal of race replays. This includes no more replays of two- or four-wheel races which have already aired on the network.

Original delayed broadcasts of motorcycle support races – such as the FIM 125cc Grand Prix, World Supersport, and AMA Formula Xtreme, which are not broadcast live on Sundays – will air from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time each Tuesday.

At 10:00 p.m. American Thunder will air, followed by Two-wheel Tuesday from Greg’s Garage from 10:30 – 11:30 p.m. and finally Corbin’s Ride On at 11:30 p.m.

According to Miner, Greg White will host an hour-long Two-wheel Tuesday show in more of a “Bike Week style,” with highlights from the weekend’s motorcycle races and feature segments on riders, motorcycles, how-to’s, etc.

In addition, Miner says that six hours of motorcycle specials will air Wednesdays after 10:00 p.m. in the new line-up.

Live and/or same-day-delayed coverage of AMA Superbike and Supersport, FIM MotoGP and 250cc Grand Prix and World Superbike races will continue to air on Sundays on SPEED, exactly as they are now.

As of August 4, SPEED will put in place a new prime time line-up Monday through Thursday. Auto magazine-style shows (like Hot Rod TV) that have been doing well in weekend morning time slots will air 5:00 – 6:00 p.m.; 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. each evening will be NASCAR TV and 9:00 – 10:00 p.m. will be the slot for Dave Despain’s live viewer call-in show Wind Tunnel, which SPEED wants to be one of the network’s “signature shows,” according to a June 24 release from SPEED.

Miner, a life-long motorcyclist, says that the programming changes were a result of “simple economics,” that two-wheel programming needs more viewers and that the network recognizes its “very passionate and very vocal” two-wheel programming viewers.

Laguna Seca AMA Superbike Preview

From a press release issued by AMA Pro Racing:

BOSTROM AIMING TO BECOME FIRST RIDER TO WIN THREE STRAIGHT AT MAZDA RACEWAY LAGUNA SECA

AMA Chevy Trucks U.S. Superbike Championship presented by Parts Unlimited

PICKERINGTON, Ohio (July 1, 2003) – Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca has a rich, 30-plus year history of AMA National racing. It was at Laguna Seca where Harley-Davidson won its final AMA Road Racing National with Cal Rayborn in 1972; legendary Hall of Famer Kenny Roberts won his final AMA National at the track in 1984; a little over a decade later Freddie Spencer won his last AMA National when he dominated the rain-soaked Superbike race in 1995; and more recently Ben Bostrom shocked the established World Superbike riders by winning a leg of that championship at Laguna Seca in 1999.

Ben’s younger brother Eric Bostrom has the opportunity to add his name to Laguna Seca racing lore on Saturday, July 12, at round 12 of the AMA Chevy Trucks U.S. Superbike Championship presented by Parts Unlimited. Bostrom will attempt to become the first rider to win the Laguna Seca AMA Superbike race three years in a row. Bostrom comes into the Laguna round not only leading the championship, but he’s also sporting a two-race winning streak at the famous Monterey, Calif., circuit.

The Honda Superbike Classic at Mazda Laguna Seca on July 11-13 is the biggest single weekend of racing in America. It combines a full schedule of AMA Chevy Trucks U.S. Superbike Championship races as well as the U.S. rounds of the FIM Superbike World Championship. There’s even more of a buzz being generated this year’s event with the advent of the AMA Red Bull Supermoto Championship, which will kick off at Laguna Seca.

The race for the 2003 AMA Chevy Trucks U.S. Superbike title is one of the best in the history of the series. The top four riders in the championship are bunched within 20 points in the series standings. Kawasaki’s Eric Bostrom holds a scant three-point lead over three-time AMA Superbike champ Mat Mladin. Mladin’s Yoshimura Suzuki teammate Aaron Yates is solidly back in the title hunt after winning the last round of the series in Brainerd, Minn., on June 29. Erion Honda’s Kurtis Roberts has strung together a slew of consistent results in the championship this year and as a result is a close fourth in the current rankings.

Bostrom started his winning streak at Laguna Seca with a close victory over Duhamel in 2001. Then last year he totally dominated the race winning by nearly 10 seconds over eventual AMA Superbike champ Nicky Hayden.

“Laguna is one of my favorite circuits for sure,” Bostrom said. “It’s a real racer’s track. I think it plays into my strengths as a rider and it suits the handling qualities of my Kawasaki. The atmosphere there is great with all the fans and of course the World Superbike Series riders. A victory at Laguna obviously would help my championship hopes as we turn the corner towards the latter part of the season.”

While Bostrom is seeking his third-straight Laguna win, series rival Mladin is hoping to win his first at the challenging track. Mladin’s 2003 season has been a roller coaster ride. The Australian racing veteran has won six rounds this year, but has at times ridden the wheels off his Suzuki – literally. The combination of Mladin’s aggressive riding style and the power of his factory GSX-R1000 Superbike has proven harsh to his tires. Mladin has led several races this year only to be thwarted by shredding rubber. Despite these issues Mladin still appears to have a good shot at becoming the first four-time AMA Superbike champion.

Mladin’s teammate Yates found a way to preserve his tires to win his second race of the season at Brainerd International Raceway late last month. That victory has put him squarely into the series title chase. Yates has had mixed results at Laguna. His best result in recent years was a third in 2000, but few will forget his incredible turn-10 high-side crash in 2001. Mladin and Yates are hoping to give Suzuki its first Laguna Seca Superbike victory since 1978 when Wes Cooley rode a Pops Yoshimura-built Suzuki GS1000 Superbike to victory.

Kurtis Roberts has turned six podium finishes into a strong fourth in the series. The native of Modesto, Calif., would love nothing better than to win at Laguna Seca, the site of so many of his famous father’s triumphs. Ben Bostrom won his first ever World Superbike race at Laguna Seca. He’s hoping a return to familiar ground will spark his 2003 campaign, which has been less than he’d hoped for so far. Miguel Duhamel joins Eric Bostrom as the only other former Laguna AMA Superbike winner in the field. It’s been five years since Duhamel last tasted victory in a Superbike event at Laguna, but he’s finished runner-up at two of the last three rounds showing he may be on the verge of his 27th AMA Superbike victory.

Mounted on potent Suzuki GSX-R1000s privateers have made a serious impact in the series this year. Shawn Higbee is experiencing a Superbike resurgence with the KWS Suzuki squad, while second-generation Superbike racer Jason Pridmore regularly challenges the factory teams on his Attack Racing Suzuki. Pridmore’s father won the very first AMA Superbike Championship race held at Laguna Seca in 1976.

Will Goodyear Strike Affect Dunlop Motorcycle Tire Production?

0

Copyright 2003, Roadracing World Publishing, Inc.:

Industry sources report that Goodyear, which owns Dunlop, and the United Steel Workers of America (USWA) union are far apart on contract issues and that a strike could be called in the near future.

The USWA labor union called Goodyear’s latest offer “completely unacceptable” and turned it down because it called for reduced health care benefits and failed to provide job protection in case of plant closures.

A deadline of midnight, June 27 passed with no contract agreement, and no further talks have been scheduled.

It’s unknown if or how a strike would affect production of Dunlop motorcycle tires in Buffalo, New York.

At post time, a Dunlop executive declined to comment on the record and referred questions to the company’s Public Relations Department, which had already closed for the day.

Stay tuned.

Hacking is fifth on the all-time AMA Supersport win list with nine and also has won one AMA Superbike race and has finished on the AMA Superbike podium another 10 times.

Stauffer And Acree Sign With Sidi

0

From a pair of press releases issued by Sidi:

Jamie Stauffer signs with Sidi boots!

The latest hot Aussie rider has made a home for himself in the states in short order.

Jamie Stauffer came to California in February, slid on his Sidi Vertebra 2 boots and proceeded to impress the establishment enough to land his ass in one of the coveted Yoshimura Suzuki seats for the rest of the AMA 600cc season!

One thing won’t change now that he is on the upward track though…Jamie recently signed a long-term agreement with Sidi so one thing will stay consistent as he battles his way up the ranks…his Sidi boots!

LEE ACREE signs with SIDI boots!

Lee Acree recently used the occasion of his mid-season team changes to do something that he has wanted to do for a long time, sign with Sidi boots!

Earlier team deals always had Lee tied to a particular boot leaving him little choice but to run what they threw at him…and hope they would work when he threw it away…

Well, for Lee anyway, those worries are over! Acree will now be wearing the most protective and supportive boot in the world, the Sidi Race Vertebra beginning this weekend, June 27-29, in round four of the Formula USA National Championship Series at Virginia International Raceway. Acree will campaign his new Yamahas and wear Sidi boots for the rest of the 2003 season, competing in AMA Pro, WERA, and Formula USA/CCS events.

“I’m looking forward to the second half of 2003,” said Acree. “I had strong finishes earlier in the year, particularly at Daytona and Sears Point, so I want to carry that momentum into the rest of this year. Sidi has also really come through for me, and I’m looking forward to racing the new Yamaha R6s, which have been the bike to beat since they came out. It doesn’t hurt that they have a really strong contingency program as well.”

Stay tuned.

Stauffer And Acree Sign With Sidi
