Fujio Yoshimura, the head of the famous Japanese tuning house, has been holding a number of European Suzuki importer tuning and set-up training schools over the past two weeks, introducing the factory racing kit parts for Suzuki’s all-new 2004 GSX-R range of machines.

Three separate seminars in Italy, France and the UK have seen invited Suzuki race teams, Suzuki dealers and press attending the day-long introduction to the 2004 tuning kits.

Yoshimura has been manufacturing the Factory race kit parts for Suzuki since 1997.

Fujio Yoshimura, 55, said: “I have come to Europe to give a series of seminars on our 2004 Yoshimura race kit parts for the new GSX-R range of machines. From a press release issued by California Speedway:

RACE FOR RELIEF EFFORTS LED BY OVERWHELMING FAN SUPPORT

Ticket holders donated price of ticket to disaster relief efforts – totaling close to $100,000

FONTANA, Calif. (December 16, 2003) — California Speedway and the American Red Cross today announced the “Race for Relief” monetary donation total of $143,284.29 to the Southern California Fire Disaster Relief fund, which is being administered by the American Red Cross.

“On behalf of all the people we serve, staff and volunteers of the American Red Cross, we would like to thank California Speedway for the support and commitment to the community,” Sandy Silva, Inland Valley Chapter CEO of the American Red Cross, said. “The speedway should be commended for helping the fire victims rebuild and get back on their feet.”

The largest of the monetary donations, $93,462.50, came from California Speedway ticket holders who donated the cost of their Champ Car weekend tickets to the disaster relief efforts following its cancellation. Close to 500 ticket holders responded with ticket totals averaging at $200, with some as high as $900.

“The real victory here lies in the hearts and hands of our ticket holders who gave unselfishly to the disaster relief efforts,” California Speedway President Bill Miller said. “The outpouring of generosity from so many people made this community effort a very humbling experience.”

With wildfires raging in the nearby mountains, and throughout Southern California, California Speedway turned to relief mode to help those affected by the fires. On November 1st and 2nd, California Speedway opened its facilities to raise funds and act as a drop-off site for much needed items for fire victims.

“I would like to express the Board’s and my appreciation to all those who contributed to this relief effort, in particular the ticketholders of California Speedway,” said Paul Biane, second district supervisor for the County of San Bernardino. “For this relief effort, the ticketholders turned their love of racing into tangible gifts that were most needed in our communities after the Grand Prix and Old Fires.”

The outpouring of support kicked off on Wednesday at the SpeedFreaks Party at Dave & Busters. The SpeedFreaks, Kenny Sargent, Crash Gladys, Lugg Nuttz and Statt Mann, host parties to kick-off the speedway’s events, however with the King Taco 500 canceled, the crew conducted an auction to jump start the “Race for Relief” effort. Motorsport professionals from across the country over-nighted autographed items with short notice for the auction.

The next event was the two-day “Race for Relief” donation site at the speedway where people could donate money, food and clothing. The two-day donation total surpassed $20,000 from the community and speedway partners. Included in the two-day total were donations from California Speedway ($5,000), Penske Automotive Group ($5,000) and Kawasaki Road Racing employee and company match ($2,400).

KFRG radio station was on-site during the two day event and played a key roll in the promotion of the relief efforts in the days leading up to “Race for Relief.” As well, more than five truckloads of clothing, diapers, toys, toiletries and houseware items were collected and donated to area shelters and the Salvation Army. With food donations from Americrown, the speedway’s on-site food and beverage company, and several CART Champ Car teams, a 24-ft. Penske truckload of food, enough to serve 3,000 meals, was distributed to 11 shelters with the help of Inland Harvest.

As if all of this wasn’t enough, Gatorade, Gate City Distributors and Red Bull donated beverages to the firefighters. Bottled juices, waters, sports and energy drinks in excess of 1,500 cases were distributed to fire base camps to refresh those fighting the blazes.

Other miscellaneous donations included Dewalt Tools (two pallets of power tools), Michigan International Speedway (clothing and 400 die-cast cars) and Lucas Oil Products (linens, books, hairbrushes and a $250 Target giftcard). Monetary donations were also received from Bridgestone ($10,000), CARA Charities ($1,000), Indy Racing League ($10,000) and Searing Industries ($1,000).

Australian Garry McCoy has agreed to terms with the NCR Ducati team to ride in the 2004 World Superbike Championship series, according to an announcement on the team’s official website.

McCoy, 31, made his World Championship debut in the Australian Grand Prix on a 125cc machine in 1992. He spent six years (1992-1997) on a 125cc, winning two races. He switched to the 500cc class in 1998 and had a career year in 2000, winning three races on the Red Bull Yamaha YZR500. After two years spent struggling with injuries, McCoy joined the new Fuchs Kawasaki team for the 2003 MotoGP season and recorded a best result of ninth on the Ninja ZX-RR.

NCR Ducati fielded Regis Laconi and David Garcia on Dunlop-equipped Ducati 998RS in the 2003 World Superbike Championship.

Stoner Completes First Test On KTM At Estoril

From a press release issued by KTM:

Casey Stoner testing with KTM at Estoril

Casey Stoner returned to Europe this week for his first official test with KTM. The Australian teenager began a three day session at the Estoril circuit on Thursday and was delighted with the results, enjoying ideal weather conditions to quickly gain feeling with the bike – lapping around three seconds off the fastest time set during September’s Portuguese Grand Prix. With temperatures of approximately 16º and low winds at one of the World Championship’s most notorious meteorological destinations, Stoner admitted things couldn’t have gone much better on his first day.

“I am very happy,” said Stoner, who was forced to miss the Estoril race earlier this year through injury. “So far the test has been spot on – the team, the bike, everything. At the beginning the bike felt quite strange, much lighter than the Aprilia, but we changed some suspension settings and I quickly started to get a good feeling. All the mechanics are very nice and seem to know what they are doing, whilst Harald Bartol has been great – he’s a very interesting guy and I think I can learn a lot from him.”

Earlier this week the 18 year old paid a visit to the factory headquarters in Austria, where he remained convinced his decision to join one of the newest teams on the Grand Prix scene was the right one. “The factory was unbelievable – for me it was like being in dreamland because I have always loved KTM off-road bikes. They turn out 350 units a day, which I could hardly believe. It just goes to show what a big firm they are and I am proud to be riding for them,” he concluded.

Kagayama Will Return To British Superbike With Crescent Suzuki

0

From a press release issued by Crescent Suzuki:

Yuki is coming home to British Superbikes

JAPANESE Factory rider Yukio Kagayama will be back in British Superbikes in 2004 dazzling race fans with his aggressive riding style aboard the Crescent Suzuki GSX-R1000.

Yuki made a huge impression in British Superbikes in 2003, winning the hearts of the fans for his gutsy performances, edge-of-the-seat riding technique and three race victories on tracks he had never visited before. His season was cut short by a horrific accident at Cadwell Park in August where he broke his pelvis in two places, but he is recovering well and looking forward to returning to his racing home in the UK.

Yuki, 29, from Yokohama in Japan, was overwhelmed by the support from his fans after his accident and is vowing to win races to repay them for their loyalty. He is currently in Japan undergoing treatment to his injuries and is confident he will be race fit by March.

The Suzuki Motor Corporation will continue to employ Yuki as its Factory test rider and is placing him in the British Championship for a second year in recognition of the importance of the series. He is expected to return to the UK early in 2004 with his family and is planning on taking part in all of the team’s pre-season testing.

Yuki joins Nottingham-based 2004 pre-season favourite John Reynolds in the official Crescent Suzuki race team. The team will be making announcements regarding its title sponsorship plans and technical staff structure shortly.

Yukio Kagayama:
“I can’t wait to be back in Britain and see my fans. My true fans are in Britain and I want to thank them for helping me through my recovery. For them I will win as many races as possible. Maybe if I win enough races I will challenge for the title, but I’m sure my team mate John-san might have something to say about that.

“Britain is my racing home. I love living in the UK, the lifestyle and the people. The Crescent team is very professional and I am happy to be given another chance by the Suzuki Company to race in BSB. I feel I have unfinished business.

“My injuries are healing well. I am still in hospital now but it is more like a job than recovery. I am in hospital through the week and then they let me go home at weekends. I can feel the improvements in my body and condition and all I can think of is racing. Sometimes I wake up in the night and all I am dreaming about is racing in the UK again.

“The doctors say I will be okay for racing in March and I know in my mind I will be able to race at the front. Several years ago I crashed during a GP in France and was very badly injured, but I got back on a bike and was faster than ever. The same will happen again, I am sure, I know this because racing is my life.

“I know the Crescent Suzuki GSX-R1000 is already a very good bike and is getting better with the development taking place now, so next year I have the best opportunity to win. Keep supporting me my fans and I will see you in the New Year.”

Paul Denning, team manager:
“There was never any question from the team whether we wanted Yuki to ride for us or not – he was always on our A-team list with JR and talk of other riders has been pure speculation. We needed to wait to hear from the doctors on his progress back from injury, whether or not he would be able to compete again and the good news is that everything appears to be on course for Yuki coming back fit and as determined as ever to do well.

“Yuki is the sort of rider who lifts the entire team’s spirits and keeps us all going. Having him back will be fantastic. Not to mention that now he knows the circuits and the bike, he should be a real title contender in 2004. JR will have to keep an eye on Yuki and I expect both of them to be going for race wins week in and out.

“We know we have the bike to beat. Judging by the numbers of riders who have called asking for a ride in 2004, I think everyone accepts we have the strongest motorcycle on the grid and now we can confirm what I think is the strongest rider line-up as well. More than any other year, the expectation will be on us to win but we are up to the challenge and look forward to the start of the season in March.”

Nick Barnes, general manager Suzuki GB:
“The Suzuki dream team is back for 2004 and we can’t wait to get the season started. JR won the second half of the 2003 series after recovering from a broken collarbone and Yuki was on course for second or third in the series until his injury stopped him, so both of them still have points to prove.

“The Crescent-prepared GSX-R1000 Superbike continues to be the bike to beat and with two fit riders, we are going to be hard to beat. I am looking forward to a good year for Suzuki in 2004.”

Laconi, a former World Superbike and 500cc Grand Prix race winner, finished fourth in the final standings with one pole position and five podium finishes in 24 races last season.
