Meet AMA Stars This Week In Southern California

0

From a late press release issued by California Speedway:

AMA Riders take over Inland Empire this week

Several American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Pro Racing riders will make appearances in Southern California as they get ready for the Yamaha Superbike Challenge at California Speedway April 2-4. Whether it’s appearing at a kick-off party, cruise night, autograph session or being on-air at two of the areas top radio stations, riders are helping make this weekend’s event unforgettable to area fans. Here’s a look at where you can be part of the action:

Wednesday

Defending Yamaha Superbike Challenge winner Mat Mladin is expected to be on-air with Scott and Bo on K-FROG 95.1 FM Wednesday morning at 8:00 a.m. In 2003, Mladin earned 10 wins (two of which were at California Speedway) and one additional podium finish on his way to claiming his fourth AMA Chevrolet Superbike Championship. He got the 2004 season off to a good start by winning the Daytona 200 by Arai earlier this month.

Thursday

Be sure to tune into K-CXX 103.9 FM to catch Yamaha rider Jamie Hacking, as he will be in studio with DJ’s Ginny Harman and Bower, Thursday morning at 8:00 a.m. Competing in the Pro Honda Oils Supersport Championship presented by Shoei and the Repsol Superstock classes this season, Hacking is the defending Supersport champ. He won the first of four checkers in the Supersport event at California Speedway last year. Ginny took a ride on a Yamaha R6 on California Speedway’s motorcycle competition course a week ago.

The SpeedFreaks, from ESPN radio 710 AM, will kickoff the Yamaha Superbike Challenge weekend at Outback Steakhouse Thursday evening beginning at 6:30 p.m. Riders expected to attend include Ben Spies, Montez Stewart, Jake Zemke, Roger Lee Hayden and Tommy Hayden. Greg White, from SPEED Channel’s 2 Wheel Tuesdays, will also be in attendance. Be sure to stop by, get some autographs and enter to win some California Speedway tickets (while supplies last).

At the tail end of their 2400-mile cross-country scooter ride, SPEED Channel has teamed up with Dave & Busters, Charter Communications and area Yamaha dealerships to allow fans the opportunity to meet Greg White. Fans will be able to race White on the games, get autographs and receive SPEED channel giveaways (as long as supplies last) from two SPEED models. The action starts at 8:00 p.m. Two Wheel Tuesday cameras will be rolling to capture footage for the show.

Friday

Cruising Fontana Friday Nights will have a handful of special appearances this Friday. The fun begins at 4 p.m. when hot rods, motorcycles and pretty much anything interesting that has wheels comes to downtown Fontana (Nuevo and Arrow intersection). Hooters Suzuki is expected to stop by at 6:30 p.m. with riders John Haner and Eric Wood along with the Hooters showbike and Hooter girls. Ben and Eric Bostrom are expected to appear at 7:30 p.m. Both appearances will take place right next to the bandstand.

Saturday

We saved the best for last; virtually every top rider is expected to attend California Speedway’s Autograph session Saturday evening from 5:15 – 6:15 p.m. in front of the speedway’s media center. Mladin, Spies, Aaron Yates, Stewart, Miguel Duhamel, Ben Bostrom, Anthony Gobert, Jason DiSalvo and Hacking, among others, including some of the Supermoto TT riders, will be on hand to sign autographs.

Tickets to the Yamaha Superbike Challenge are $10 on Friday, $30 on Saturday and $30 for Sunday. Two-day packages are available for $50 and three-day packages are available for $60. For ticket and event information call 800-944-RACE (7223) or log onto www.californiaspeedway.com.

Mesa Wins Formula Pacific In AFM Season Opener At Buttonwillow

In one of the most impressive rides of his career, two-time AFM champion Rob Mesa found his way back to the top step of the featured Formula Pacific podium on his G-Force Performance Suzuki GSX-R1000 during the AFM season opener at Buttonwillow Sunday. Ken Hill led early on his Dan Kyle tuned Suzuki GSX-R1000, as defending Champion Jeff Tigert crashed out of the race with a vicious highside in Turn 4 a few laps into the race. Mesa made his way past Hill in Turn 9 and held the lead to the checkered flag to take the win, with James Randolph taking second after forcing his way past Hill in the narrow infield. David Stanton took third on his Arclight Racing GSX-R1000, barely beating Hill to the line.

Tigert fared better earlier in the day in the 600 Superbike race, charging from a ninth row grid position into second before a red flag brought the race to a close. The finishing order was taken from the last completed lap, relegating Tigert and his Honda CBR600RR to third. Chris Siglin was awarded the win, with Andy Carman a distant second after challenging Siglin for the first three laps. Siglin and Carman were both on Yamaha R6s.

600 Production was almost a repeat of 600 Superbike, with holeshot-master Siglin barely beating Carman into Turn 1 at the start. Carman, in his first ride on a new R6 after years on a dated Honda, was glued once again to Siglin’s rear wheel for the first half of the race, eventually dropping off the pace to finish a safe second.

Despite a poor grid position, Siglin shot into the lead early and never looked back in the Open Production race, his first race on a new Yamaha R1. James Randolph, also hunting Yamaha contingency money on a new R1, worked his way through the pack when a crash involving David Robinson, “Wild” Bill Fordyce, and another rider brought the race to a halt. Siglin was awarded the win, with Randolph second and Matt Harvey third on a Werkstatt-tuned GSX-R1000.

After retiring from AFM Tech Inspection, former 250 Production champion Tom Dorsey was able to once again focus on his racing effort, taking the win in 250 Superbike on his Aprilia RS250 over the TZR250 of Tommy Okihura. Tom’s victory came immediately after the 650 Twins race, which saw him in the early lead before dropping back to eventually finish fifth.

Winning the 650 Twins race was Spears Racing’s Brian Long, despite a fuelling problem that prevented his SV650 from working at full throttle. Felipe Cabezas, the AFM’s Top Novice of 2003, inherited the lead when Long’s SV650 began encountering problems. Cabezas gave the lead right back to Long by crashing out in Turn 2, succumbing to the pressure of having a multi-time CCS Number One plate-holder behind him. Long went on to take the win, with the Jason Butler finishing second on his Q-Café Suzuki SV650 despite crashing earlier in the day in the 600 Superbike race.

Long also had a strong performance in the first-ever running of Formula 4, which allows 4-stroke Twins up to 650ccs, 4-stroke Inline Fours up to 550ccs, street-based 2-strokes up to 250ccs, and any four-stroke Singles. Without the rumored/controversial R5.5 (a destroked 2003 R6 built to meet the 550cc class limit) of Ross Wells on the grid, Kurt Spencer was able to take the early lead on his Twin Works Factory SV650. With his fuelling system once again fully operational, Long made his way past Spencer to take the lead, with Mike Lohmeyer in his shadow on his G-Force tuned VFR450. Lohmeyer challenged Long on the last lap but was unable to take the lead, allowing Long to take his second win of the day. Lohmeyer, who won the 450 Superbike race earlier in the day, finished a strong second with Felipe Cabezas third.

Long was also awarded the win in Open Twins, after managing a photo-finish with Michelin tire distributor Alex Florea. Long’s win was his first on a new Suzuki SV1000.

Despite an exciting raceday with many fine performances by many talented individuals, many AFMers left Buttonwillow with a great deal of concern for the well-being of “Wild” Bill Fordyce, who was transported from the track with serious injuries after crashing in the 750 Superbike race.

AMA Pro Racing Previews Fontana Supersport Race

From a press release issued by AMA Pro Racing:

YOUNG GUN DISALVO LEADS PRO HONDA OILS SUPERSPORT PRESENTED BY SHOEI

PICKERINGTON, Ohio (March 29, 2004) — Jason DiSalvo, 20, of Stafford, N.Y., has been on the racing radar for a long time for a rider of his age. By the time he was 17, DiSalvo already had an impressive racing resume. This racing phenom was an experienced AMA amateur flat track racer; winner of the esteemed AMA Horizon Award for being the top amateur road racer in the country; a rider with important European and World Championship races under his belt; and a winner of an AMA Superstock Series race in 2002. Just a few weeks ago DiSalvo took the biggest win yet of his young career when he came out the victor in the thrilling Daytona Supersport final.

Now DiSalvo finds himself atop the point standings in the 2004 Pro Honda Oils Supersport as the series heads to round two at the Yamaha Superbike Challenge at California Speedway in Fontana, Calif., on April 2-4.

DiSalvo was victorious in the opening round at Daytona International Speedway in early March, coming out on top of another classic drafting battle that saw the top six riders finish within two-tenths of a second. DiSalvo and Roger Lee Hayden actually rubbed fairings as the two crossed the finish line at Daytona. It marked DiSalvo’s first win in AMA Supersport and gave Yamaha its first Daytona Supersport victory in 14 years. In addition DiSalvo set a Daytona Supersport track record en route to winning the pole for the race.

“It feels great to get my first Supersport win,” DiSalvo said. “I’m looking forward to Fontana. With my qualifying record, that was one lap. I needed 15 fast laps to win it. Now I need 10 more good races to have a great season.”

Yamaha, which won the AMA Supersport Championship last year with Jamie Hacking, looks to be the manufacturer to beat again this season. Fully half of the top-10 riders coming into Fontana are Yamaha mounted. Defending champ and Fontana Supersport winner Hacking is ranked fifth. He’ll be looking to become the first repeat winner in the class at Fontana. Other Yamaha riders in the top 10 include another young gun Aaron Gobert, and veterans Michael Barnes and Damon Buckmaster. Barnes’ run in the lead group at Daytona was especially impressive. Riding a Prieto Racing Yamaha, he was the only non-factory rider in the top 10.

Kawasaki also looks strong in Supersport this year. Roger Lee Hayden came within a wheel length of beating DiSalvo at Daytona and his older brother and teammate Tommy was right there as well. Roger Lee hopes to quickly follow DiSalvo and break through to earn his first AMA Supersport win at Fontana. Brother Tommy is already the sixth-ranked AMA Supersport rider all-time, so a victory for him at Fontana would come as no surprise. Attack Kawasaki’s Tony Meiring could also be a factor.

Suzuki appears to have an uphill battle coming out of Daytona. The top Suzuki finisher at Daytona was 2002 AMA Supersport champ Aaron Yates, who took seventh. However, Yates is serving a one-event suspension and will miss the Supersport race as well as both rounds of the Superbike double-header at Fontana. That leaves ninth-place Daytona finisher Steve Rapp, of Valvoline EMGO Suzuki, the leading Suzuki rider coming into California Speedway. Yoshimura Suzuki’s Ben Spies suffered a mechanical problem with his bike at Daytona and comes into Fontana with no points.

The California Speedway Supersport final will be televised on SPEED Channel on Tuesday, April 6 at 2 p.m. EST. For additional information on the Yamaha Superbike Challenge call 800-944-RACE (7223) or visit the website www.californiaspeedway.com.

Roadracing World Action Fund Donations To Increase Racetrack Safety Top $286,000

Donations to the Roadracing World Action Fund, Inc., a 501(3)c non-profit corporation dedicated to reducing racetrack injuries by encouraging the use of soft barriers, have reached $266,869.80 for road racing and $19,147 for dirt track, for a combined total of $286,016.80.

Max McAllister’s Traxxion Dynamics has pledged $5 to the Roadracing World Action Fund for each copy sold of the “Suspension for Mortals” video training course and with his latest contribution of $750, Max’s total now stands at $5900.

“These contributions bring me up to #4!” Max wrote, referring to his position on the Roadracing World Action Fund contributor list. Contributors appear in decreasing order of dollars donated, and Max had leapfrogged the former number four position holder, Eric Buell/Buell Motorcycle Co., whose contribution of $5800 helped launch the successful Airfence* campaign in 2001.

The descending order listing, while meant to acknowledge large contributors, does have a flaw, however. If contributions are made with separate designations, they are not added together in one lump sum, and appear in different positions on the list. This is true in the case of frequent contributors Fred and Adrienne Bittner. Their initial contribution of $2900 (the amount needed to purchase one section of Airfence) is listed separately from their second donation of $2900, which was sent “In Honor of Papa Thiam.” A third donation of $450 is listed under dirt track donations. The Bittner’s total contribution of $6,250 would place them above Max’s ranking of fourth on the list, but because of their separate listings, it doesn’t show up that way.

All donations to the Roadracing World Action Fund are greatly appreciated, and it is amazing and profound that that so many members of the motorcycle community have come together to improve safety. So no matter the order in which it is presented, the contributor list makes for interesting reading.

A list of contributors can be found at the end of this post. For more information, click the Roadracing World Action Fund link at the top of the roadracingworld.com home page.

More On AOD’s Overall Endurance Win At Jennings GP

From a press release issued by Army Of Darkness Ministry of Information:

Five-time WERA National Endurance Mediumweight Superbike Champions Army Of Darkness have a new rider line up for 2004 but this weekend’s results show that the team’s winning ways remain the same. Scott Brown and Ben Walters have joined Sam Fleming on the rider roster for Army Of Darkness with Crew Chief Tim Gooding shouldering the brunt of the effort for machinery preparation.

The weekend had an inauspicious beginning when the new A motor suffered a parts failure in its first laps. While Gooding spent the day installing an old stock motor in the chassis, Brown, Walters and Fleming focused on chassis set-up and consistent lap times on the back-up bike. Michelin provided a variety of front and rear tires for evaluation.

In the practice session before the start of the race the racebike was destroyed in a crash in the fastest turn on the track. Brown was lucky to avoid serious injury when he caught a false neutral bending into turn three.

Gooding’s engine swapping diligence paid off since AOD was to now start the race with its B chassis and a C motor. “Loudoun Motorsports had supplied us with a new 2003 model for this season. Without that bike we would have had to be spectators today,” Gooding said.

With Brown still sore from the crash Walters took the start of the race and quickly put the AOD bike into second place overall behind a liter class machine. The long distance capacity supplied by the Eric Wallgren-built gas tank allowed the AOD machine to take the overall lead when the bigger bike was forced to pit for fuel.

At the 80-minute point Brown had recovered sufficiently from his tumble to ride and demonstrated the talent that won him two national endurance titles in the past. Between the fast riding and flawless pit stops AOD built up a two-lap lead.

Walters took the third stint and stretched the lead to three laps before triggering the tip-over switch on the bike with a long slide. AOD lost two laps before getting the bike restarted.

Fleming took over the controls with a one-lap lead and held a consistent gap over second place. With 40 minutes left in the race AOD completed its last pit stop and Walters took the flag for AOD’s first overall win.

Tire availability became a minor issue. Many endurance teams switched to Michelins from last year but had failed to call ahead with their tire needs leaving the usually well-stocked Michelin truck a little bare. “It’s a good thing these tires wear so well because we had to use a take-off for our last stint,” Fleming said. “Now that Walt (Schaefer, Michelin vendor) knows that the demand is three times higher than last year he might have to bring a bigger trailer.”

It was the first overall endurance win for a middleweight class machine since 2000.

More, from a press release issued by KTM:

IRTA Test: 2nd day free practice 125cc, Jerez

The final day of the 2004 IRTA TEST continue for 125cc under the rain. Test ended again with Italian Roberto Locatelli first. KTM took the 6th result with Mika Kallio while Casey Stoner finished 8th .

Stoner – While I was doing my second best time I crashed: it just happened! I anyway improved my yesterday time and it almost had no consequences. In the next days while I’m here in Jerez to watch MotoGP class I’ll visit the Mobile Clinic.

Kallio – The circuit was wet all day long a part few hours in the afternoon. I’m happy anyway because despite to the result I know that with good conditions and more time available I could be much faster.

Bartol – Only few hours without the rain in the afternoon didn’t permit to make big improvements, a part for Casey’s result. Unfortunately today with this weather conditions we couldn’t make anything better.

Meet AMA Stars This Week In Southern California
