YAMAHA’S WORK CONTINUES IN BRNO

The Gauloises Fortuna Yamaha Team continued working today at the Brno circuit in the first day of a two-day test, joined by most other riders in the 2004 MotoGP line-up. Within twenty-four hours of claiming their respective second and sixth places in yesterday’s Czech Grand Prix, riders Valentino Rossi and Carlos Checa were again lapping the picturesque Brno circuit with their YZR-M1 machines and ended the day faster than the rest of the pack.

Rossi made the fastest lap time of the day (1’58.247s) after putting in an arduous 82 laps. For around 20 of those laps the World Champion tested a newly designed front fairing on his Yamaha machine but then switched back to his current M1 fairing. Rossi’s team-mate Checa was also on form today, finishing with the second fastest time of 1’59.016s and around 80 laps under his belt. Both riders took advantage of the warm and sunny conditions to work on their dry weather settings, as well as testing Michelin tyres and working on electronic mapping.

“There wasn’t so much time during the weekend to work on set-up in the dry”, said Team Director Davide Brivio. “So this was a good chance to improve, and the times today were good. The Michelin tyres they used today were very good, again this showed in their lap times. The track temperature was much higher today as well which of course helped.”

Of his new fairing, Valentino Rossi commented, “I made some laps with the new fairing but couldn’t really feel a difference, although the nose of the bike looks very different. The engineers will analyse the data and decide when we will use the new fairing again. For sure it won’t be in the next race in Portugal because it was our first test with it.”

Gauloises Fortuna Yamaha continues testing at the Brno circuit tomorrow.

BRNO – TEST DAY 1

First Day of testing for the Team Telefonica Movistar Honda MotoGP.

After the incredible win of the Czech Republic GP, the Spaniard Sete Gibernau started testing today around 15.00. He totally lapped 37 laps, 1.59.6 his best time.

Sete worked together with the team on comparative test: he tried the new parts brought to Brno by HRC and compared the performances of the new bike with the old one. Tomorrow another important test session in order to know better the new bike and to decide what kind of bike to use in occasion of the next GP to be held in Portugal next 5th Sepetember.

Sete’s team mate Colin Edwards tested different rear tyres in order to solve the problem found during the race of yesterday. He lapped the whole day, 1.59.4 his best time

MOTOGP WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 2004
FUCHS KAWASAKI RACING TEAM DEVELOPMENT TEST
23RD AUGUST 2004 – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

GRUELLING TEST FOR FUCHS KAWASAKI’S NAKANO AND HOFMANN

Less than 24 hours after finishing in the points in Sunday’s Czech Republic Grand Prix, Fuchs Kawasaki riders, Shinya Nakano and Alex Hofmann, were back on track and racking up the laps as they continued the development of the Ninja ZX-RR during the first of two days of testing at the Brno circuit.

Determined to solve the front end chatter problems that plagued him during yesterday’s race, Nakano completed more than 70 laps as his crew worked to find a combination of suspension and geometry settings that would eliminate the chatter. A change to the latest Öhlins forks towards the end of the day brought about a definite improvement to the front end of the bike, as well as offering better stability under braking and more feedback from the front tyre.

Nakano will continue to work on refining the chassis balance of his Ninja ZX-RR tomorrow, before moving on to test the latest front rubber from Fuchs Kawasaki’s tyre partner, Bridgestone.

There was no rest for Hofmann’s crew after yesterday’s Czech Republic Grand Prix, as the 24-year-old German’s race bike had to be stripped down immediately after the race to allow the latest engine and chassis components to be fitted ready for today’s test.

With so many new components and settings to test and evaluate, Hofmann’s crew set a gruelling pace as they worked their way through an intensive test programme. After completing 73 laps by time the red flag brought an end to today’s session, Hofmann’s feedback on the new components was positive and he was confident that further improvements could be made during tomorrow’s final day of testing.

Shinya Nakano: 70 Laps/1’59.73
“We were all disappointed after yesterday’s result, and that definitely provided the motivation we needed to get through today’s test schedule, as well as trying to find a solution to the front end chatter that caused me so many problems in the race. For most of the day we didn’t seem to be making much progress with the chatter, but a change to the new Öhlins front forks and some modifications to the chassis balance for the final hour of testing made a big improvement. The new forks definitely feel more stable under braking and they also give more feedback from the front tyre. We’ll continue with these forks tomorrow, when we’ll be working to refine both the suspension settings and the chassis balance.”

Alex Hofmann: 73 Laps/2’01.11
“It’s been a long, tough day, not just for me, but for my crew as well. We completed more than 70 laps around one of the longest circuits on the MotoGP calendar working our way through today’s test schedule. It’s tiring, but the fact that we had such positive results from the new components we tested today made it all worth while. The changes to the engine have made a noticeable improvement, as have the latest Öhlins forks we tried for the first time in the bike today. We know where we need to be in terms of lap times and, while we’re not quite there yet, the progress we’ve made today has certainly brought us a lot closer to our goal. Overall, it’s been a good day and I’m looking forward to getting back on the bike tomorrow and improving things further.”

Naoya Kaneko: Technical Coordinator
“Both the riders and crew have had to work really hard to get through what was a pretty intensive test schedule today. While Alex started the day testing new engine and chassis components, with encouraging results, Shinya and his crew concentrated on eliminating the front end chatter he experienced during yesterday’s race. The latest Öhlins forks Shinya tried towards the end of the day certainly reduced the amount of chatter, but it’s not just one thing that is causing the problem; we need to find a compromise between tyre, suspension settings and front end geometry if we are to eliminate this chatter completely. This is what we’ll concentrate on with Shinya tomorrow, while Alex continues to work on the balance of his bike while tyre testing for Bridgestone.”

Updated: Szoke Wins The Race, Picotte Takes The Canadian Superbike Championship at Mont-Tremblant

Jordan Szoke won the race but Pascal Picotte’s third place was enough to wrap up the 2004 Parts Canada Superbike Championship at round seven of the eight-round series Sunday at Mont Tremblant in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, Canada.

Riding his Fast Company/Honda Canada CBR1000RR shod with a medium-compound rear Dunlop slick, Szoke finished 2.1 seconds in front of Coors Light Racing Blackfoot Suzuki’s Clint McBain and Picotte Performance Yamaha’s Picotte.

After early leader Picotte faded, Szoke and DXS Diablo Suzuki’s Steve Crevier swapped the lead several times until lap 14 of 15, when Crevier crashed in the right-hander at the end of the back straightaway while trying to outbrake Szoke. From there, Szoke, a two-time former Canadian Superbike Champion, cruised home to his first win in two years.

McBain also used a medium-compound rear Dunlop on his GSX-R1000 to finish second, just in front of Picotte, who said he never got comfortable with the hard-compound Dunlop he had on the rear of his YZF-R1. In fact, Picotte ran wide at the Namerow corner and onto pit lane at one point, before coming back to score third to wrap up his second consecutive Canadian Superbike Championship.

Winner of the last round, Kevin Lacombe finished fourth on his Brooklin Cycle/Lacombe Racing Yamaha YZF-R1, well clear of his teammate Frank Trombino and Kawasaki Canada’s Francis Martin.

Martin’s teammate Matt McBride rode the corners harder to beat Szoke’s teammate Andrew Nelson for seventh. Matt Binns brought his Z1 Cycle Tech Ducati 999R home ninth from the last row of the grid. Zenon Nelson rounded out the top 10 on a Suzuki GSX-R600.

Crevier’s teammate Jeff Williams was racing for third when he suffered a complete brake failure at the end of the back straightaway at an estimated 155 mph. Williams laid his GSX-R1000 down with the rear brake but still tumbled into a tire-fronted Armco barrier. He escaped relatively uninjured, suffering minor abrasions to his left arm.

PICOTTE, SZOKE WIN BIG

MONT-TREMBLANT, QC Jordan Szoke claimed his first win of the season but Pascal Picotte wrapped up his second straight Parts Canada Superbike Championship title in round 7 of the series at Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant Sunday.

Riding the Honda Canada / Fast Company Honda CBR1000RR, Szoke took the lead on lap 8 of the 15-lap race around the 2.65-mile Mont-Tremblant track and then withstood constant pressure from Steve Crevier. The Maple Ridge, BC racer crashed his DXS Diablo Racing Team Suzuki GSX-R1000 on the final lap, leaving Brantford, ON’s Szoke clear to take the win.

Calgary’s Clint McBain finished second on the Coors Light Racing / Blackfoot Suzuki GSX-R1000 while polesitter and early race leader Picotte survived tire trouble to place third on the Team Yamaha / Picotte Performance Yamaha YZF-R1.

Picotte’s result gives him 328 points in the Parts Canada Superbike standings compared to the 266 of second place Szoke. With only one round remaining, at Shannonville Motorsport Park Sept. 5 no one can overtake Picotte.

“Overall it’s a great finish,” said the Granby, QC racer, who earlier in the day secured his second consecutive Hindle Exhaust Pro 600 Sport Bike crown. “We’ve wrapped up both championships and that was the goal this weekend.”

Fellow Granby rider Kevin Lacombe was fourth on Sunday aboard the Lacombe Racing / Brooklin Cycle Yamaha YZF-R1 and is third in the standings with 249 points.

In Pro 600 Sport Bike, Picotte claimed his fifth win of the year to clinch his second straight title, taking his Yamaha YZF-R6 past Crevier’s Suzuki GSX-R600 on lap 3 of 12.

Szoke claimed second on his Honda CBR600RR and Rock Forest, QC’s Francis Martin was third riding the Canadian Kawasaki Motors Kawasaki ZX-6RR. Crevier faded to fourth.

Levis, QC’s Dominic Lavoie won the International Motorcycle SUPERSHOW Amateur 600 Sport Bike race on Sunday on his Kawasaki ZX-6RR after taking the lead from polesitter Thomas Macsanszky on the final lap.

But North Vancouver rider Darren James took over the class points lead by finishing third on his Yamaha YZF-R6 while Mississauga, ON’s Rudy Raposo crashed unhurt. James now has 175 points to Raposo’s 171 and the 161 of Lavoie heading to the Shannonville season finale.

The top competitors in the Parts Canada Superbike Championship will take part in a non-championship invitational race at Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve this weekend before concluding their season at Shannonville.

The Mont-Tremblant event will be televised on TSN on Oct. 10 at 1:00 p.m. EDT and on Quebec’s RDS on Oct. 23 at 2:00 p.m. EDT. The action will also appear in one-hour format this fall on TORONTO1 and A-Channel stations in Winnipeg, Calgary and Edmonton.

Tray Batey won every race he entered during a WERA National Challenge Series event at Talladega Gran Prix Raceway in Talladega, Alabama on Sunday, taking home four first-place trophies.

Open Superstock was the first of the 12-lap sprint races, and Tray Batey took the lead at the start on his Vesrah Suzuki GSX-R750. Brian Stokes followed in second on his GSX-R750, but was unable to catch Batey.

Batey’s second win came in the Heavyweight Twins race on his Suzuki SV1000. Roger Bell took the initial lead and gave Batey an early-race challenge, but Batey eventually passed and pulled away to win.

The 750cc Superstock race was nearly identical to the Open Superstock race, with Stokes chasing Batey, both on their Suzuki GSX-R750s. Stokes finished close behind Batey, but not close enough to challenge for the lead.

The Formula One race presented a familiar sight–Batey leading Stokes in another GSX-R750 Suzuki battle. Stokes was able to keep up with Batey better than he had in the previous two races until one of his handlebars came loose and he was forced to slow down. Batey took the checkered flag with a five-second lead on Stokes.

Attack Kawasaki’s Josh Hayes took advantage of a break in the AMA Pro Racing schedule to get back to his club-racing roots. Despite starting from the back of the field in the 600cc Superstock race, he was able to work his way up on his Kawasaki 636cc ZX-6R to take the lead on lap five. Behind him, RacerSupply.com’s Logan Young was at the front of a five-way battle for second, followed by Vesrah Suzuki’s Mark Junge, both riders on Suzuki GSX-R600s.

Bo Morgan won both the Formula 2 and Lightweight Twins races on his Suzuki SV650. He worked his way past Bruce Stanford to take the lead in Formula 2, but led the entire Lightweight Twins race.

Matt Furtek and Derek Keyes traded the lead throughout the 600cc Superbike race. Furtek took the lead for good on lap eight on his Vesrah Suzuki GSX-R600, and held off a late charge from Keyes, who was on a Yamaha YZF-R6.

Craig Montgomery won the 750cc Superbike race on a Kawasaki 636cc ZX-6R. Novice Ryan Gordon worked his way up from the Novice field, which started in the second wave of the race, to finish second overall on his Suzuki GSX-R750.

There were no red flags during the day’s races, and all of the events were completed in about three-and-a-half hours.

Updated: News From MotoGP Team Testing At Brno

From a press release issued by Gauloises Fortuna Yamaha:

Gauloises Fortuna Yamaha Team Test
Brno, Czech Republic

LAP TIMES:

Copyright 2004, Roadracing World Publishing, Inc.

Batey Stars In WERA National Challenge At Talladega
