Quick Look: Return of the KTM 790 Duke

Featured In the August 2024 issue of Roadracing World:

“It’s insane what can go through your head when you’re on the track.

“I clearly remember my time on the big track at Willow Springs Raceway with the KTM 790 Duke a few years back, because I’d just discovered the disco band Boney M and was humming their 1979 chart-topping single ‘Gotta Go Home’ as I whistled down the back straight.

“I was in a very good mood, heading into Turn Eight with the throttle at the stop and with absolutely no intention of backing off when I flicked it in. Good times…

“So when we got our hands on the latest version of the 790 Duke, let’s just say that I was primed for a positive experience…”

“Quick Look: 2024 KTM 790 Duke,” by Michael Gougis

The 2024 790 Duke is exactly the same light, agile, responsive, standard-style bike that was introduced back in 2018, with plenty of power and advanced electronics. Here’s the big difference: The 2024 model costs a full $1,000 less than it did in 2018! Read our test report and learn how well KTM’s “value” bike works—it’s in the latest issue of Roadracing World!

Riding The Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 And Vitpilen 401: Bigger, Better Arrows

What’s the same? The piston. That’s the way a Husqvarna representative described the differences between the prior Svartpilen/Vitpilen 401 and the new 2024 platform. A day spent blasting up and down twisty roads above Malibu in Southern California at the 2024 introduction of the machines revealed a bigger, better, and easier-to-ride brace of street Singles, aimed at making it even easier for newer riders to enter the sport (and for re-entry riders to get back on two wheels).

What’s different? New frame, new engine, new electronics.

The displacement is larger, the chassis is bigger, and the electronics suite comes from KTM’s well-loved RC 390. But Husqvarna engineers were determined to keep the riding position accessible to new riders. So the shock is offset and mounted to a new swingarm. The airbox is redesigned and aimed forward. The subframe is revised. Those changes allow the company to keep the seat height relatively low, and combined with the claimed dry weight of 340.6 lbs., the bikes are easy for an inexperienced rider to manage at a stoplight.

The new LC4c engine, a single-cylinder four-stroke with a bore and stroke of 89mm x 64mm, features new cases, a new cylinder head, and new fuel injectors. The claimed engine output is 44.25 horsepower (about what the previous model made) to meet tiered licensing requirements outside of the United States. But the longer stroke, which brings the displacement from 373cc to 398.1cc, results in increased torque, Husqvarna says. The new engine also features longer service intervals.

New WP Apex suspension is adjustable front and rear.

Two ride modes, Street and Rain, are available, and the rear-wheel ABS can be switched off–the company calls that Supermoto Mode. A quickshifter allows clutchless up-and down-shifting. The cornering-sensitive traction control can be switched off. The bikes feature a new ride-by-wire system, and an assisted/slipper clutch keeps the rear wheel from hopping during deceleration.

The 401 platform comes in two variations. The Svartpilen (which means Black Arrow in Swedish) comes with scrambler styling cues, including wire spoke wheels, Pirelli Scorpion Rally tires, and higher handlebars. The Vitpilen (White Arrow) comes with Michelin Road 6 tires, lower handlebars, and cast-aluminum-alloy wheels.

Riding the bikes is an exercise in simplicity. The clutch pull is light, the feel at the brake lever direct. The front has a single 320mm disc brake, but the relatively light weight means the machine doesn’t need more front brake. The relatively short hydraulic hose means less is lost in translation when the rider pulls the front brake lever.

The increased torque means leaving a stoplight or stop sign is easier, and the engine pulls harder than prior iterations. This is very useful on the tight, uphill hairpins.

In some circumstances, the suspension feels almost rigid. The damping is less than ideal over the worst pavement heaves, but it is better than many bikes in this market segment and works well on bumpy-but-not-awful pavement. The Svartpilen felt a little more vague when cornering, something I attribute to the tires. The Pirellis would be more suited to light off-road duty while the Michelins are definitely pavement-only tires.

The Svartpilen and Vitpilen are among the new breed of bikes that are suitable for beginners–or people who stopped riding when real life interfered but want to start riding again–but won’t be tossed aside once someone gets the hang of (or re-acquires) the fundamentals of riding. They are stylish in a unique, eye-catching way, powerful enough to use comfortably on an interstate highway and handle well enough to keep things entertaining. At $5,899, the Husqvarnas offer a lot of features for the money, and there are worse ways for someone to start–or re-start–their motorcycling journey.

Intro: Continental ContiAttack SM 2 Tires

Featured In the August 2024 issue of Roadracing World:

Continental Tire was founded in 1871 and was a leader in motorcycle, bicycle, and automotive tire development and innovation. The company originated the first water-dispersing grooved tire (in 1904) and, during the 1970s, made the most popular brand of bias ply tires in the USA. They were involved in many forms of racing and steadily took over other tire manufacturers as well as automotive component supply companies.

Continental’s market share of motorcycle tires in the USA collapsed from 50% to 4% in a matter of years. No doubt there was a sting of pride but, from a business perspective, the loss was largely irrelevant because of Continental’s diversification into other types of tires, as well as becoming a huge manufacturer of automotive electronics.

Currently, Continental is the fourth-largest manufacturer of tires in the world; the third-largest automotive parts and electronics manufacturer; has around 200,000 employees worldwide; and has gross revenue that is about 250% of, say, Yamaha. About 14 years ago a small group inside Continental decided to get a serious about motorcycle tires again…

Roadracing World Wild Card Editor/racer/racebike-builder Sam Fleming goes to the Continental Hannover proving ground in Austria to test the latest ContiAttack tires, the SM 2 series, which he found to be “an excellent choice for any lightweight bike and rider combination that won’t be generating the forces of high speed supersport bikes.” Read the rest of Fleming’s review in the latest issue of Roadracing World!

Track Test: Riding Alpha Racing’s Excellent BMW M 1000 RR, In The August Issue

Featured In the August 2024 issue of Roadracing World:

In 1888, Mrs. Bertha Benz loaded her two teen-aged boys on the back of an internal combustion engine-powered trike (built by her husband) and set out on the first motorcycle-adjacent road trip of all time. She had to buy fuel at pharmacies, invent brake pad linings along the way, and augment the power of the Benz engine with her teenage sons for some of the climbs.

She completed the 66-mile journey (as a hooligan, as the trip was officially illegal) to prove to her husband (who didn’t know she was going to do it), and the world, that internal combustion vehicles were viable.

Mrs. Benz also established the now time-honored tradition of all racers to follow in her footsteps, chasing budgets and better metallurgy, that what “wins on Sunday, sells on Monday.”

Following Bertha’s example, many motorcycle manufacturers have proclaimed that their bikes are race ready, secure in the knowledge that the claim will rarely be put to the test.

At Laguna Seca in July 2024, Nolan Lamkin suffered the misfortune of crashing his racebike and destroying the last of his spare parts in qualifying for the MotoAmerica Stock 1000 race. His team purchased the Alpha Racing M 1000 RR displayed at the San Jose BMW garage at the track, changed the fork springs and shock, and took a ninth-place finish in Stock 1000, less than 13 seconds behind the winner, and fifth in Superbike Cup. Bertha Benz would have been proud!

Two days later I had the good fortune to test ride an almost identical Alpha Racing M 1000 RR at Sonoma Raceway…

“Alpha Racing M 1000 RR,” by Sam Q. Fleming

Sam Fleming threw a leg over a bike marketed as a turn-key racebike—if, indeed, racebikes still had keys—and found what he described as the best racebike he has ever ridden. Read all about it in the latest issue of Roadracing World!

Collections: Moto Talbott Museum, In The August Issue

Featured In the August 2024 issue of Roadracing World:

Anybody who views motorcycles as being objects of art as much as they are motor vehicles may want to make plans to visit the Moto Talbott Museum in Carmel Valley, California, before it closes. The Moto Talbott Museum is the passion project of Robb Talbott, who was born on the East Coast but as a kid moved with his family to the Monterey Peninsula in the 1950s.

”My parents said I couldn’t have a motorcycle. They were too dangerous,” said Talbott. “I went off to college [to study Fine Art and Design] at 17 and cars were not allowed on campus for Freshmen. So, what did I buy? A motorcycle…”

“Collections: Moto Talbott Museum,” by David Swarts

When Robb Talbott heard of the Guggenheim Museum’s “The Art Of The Motorcycle” exhibit, it struck a chord with him. “It opened up the concept that motorcycles are art,” said Talbott, “and I had never thought of that even though I had studied Art. All of a sudden, I went, ‘Aah!’ What I had been racing and riding and wrenching on weren’t just bikes. They were Art. My light bulbs went off, and I started thinking about opening a museum.” Read the story about a world-class collection that is a testament to one man’s appreciation of the motorcycle as art—it’s in the latest issue of Roadracing World!

MotoGP: Michelin Bringing Extra Tire Choices For Repaved Aragon

Michelin has prepared for the return of MotoGP™ to the Alcañiz circuit

• MotoGP returns to the large Motorland Aragón complex for the first time since September 2022.

• The circuit has been completely resurfaced, leading Michelin and its partners to start from scratch, as the data collected so far has become obsolete.

• Michelin Motorsport brings its new MotoGP tyres to Aragón, with three rear options instead of two to better understand the characteristics of the new asphalt.

The MotoGP FIM World Championship returns to the Circuito de Alcañiz, in the heart of the large Motorland Aragon complex, for the first time since 2022. Opened in 2009, it hosted a motorcycle Grand Prix for the first time in 2010, and having become a regular venue for MotoGP, Motorland Aragón even hosted two MotoGP races in 2020 due to the pandemic that disrupted the calendar. In 2023, the 5.077 km circuit, taken in an anti-clockwise direction with 10 left turns, 7 right turns, and two straights, (the longest of which is 968 m) underwent major renovation work. All of its asphalt has been replaced, and it is now a 100% new track that the Michelin Motorsport teams and their partners will discover for the first time.

“Controlling wear and heat will be the two main challenges of the weekend,” says Piero Taramasso, Michelin’s two-wheel competition manager. “Given the expected conditions, we have chosen fairly hard rubber compounds from our new ranges, as track temperature here could reach 50°C. Two years ago the race took place on 18 September, with slightly less complex weather, and also on a track whose surface we knew very well. Given the new asphalt, the configuration of the circuit and the significant constraints that this track exerts, both for the front and rear tyres, we are now starting from scratch with new rubber. We know that a new surface generates more wear on the rear tyres, but also significant thermal variations. However, the specific characteristics will depend on the grain size of the new surface. If it is ‘open’ the ground will be very abrasive, and if it is closed (smooth), we will have to deal with rapid temperature increases. The first tests will be very important for the set-up of the bikes, and the riders will have to deal with multiple combinations, but we will be there to guide them in their choices. As always, we will bring three compounds for the front, but three, instead of the usual two, for the rear.”

For the Gran Premio GoPro de Aragón, Michelin Motorsport will provide its partners with symmetrical Soft, Medium and Hard rubber compounds for the front. At the rear, the riders will be able to choose between a Soft tyre with a rubber compound oriented towards firmness, a Medium option using the same philosophy, and a Hard tyre dedicated to high temperatures. The rear tyres will be asymmetric, with the left shoulder reinforced, to respond to the greater number of turns on this side.

In case of rain, Michelin will offer its MICHELIN Power Rain tyres in Soft and Medium compounds, for both the front and rear. The rears also being asymmetric, like their MICHELIN Power slick counterparts.

In 2022, it was Enea Bastianini (Gresini Racing) who won the Grand Prix, just 0.042 seconds ahead of Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team), with Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia racing) finishing in third.

This year, the Gran Premio GoPro de Aragón race weekend will start on Friday 30 August with Free Practice 1 from 10:45 to 11:30. Then a second session will take place from 15:00 to 16:00, allowing the 10 fastest riders to directly access the second phase of qualifying (Q2). After a final free practice session on Saturday morning from 10:10 to 10:40, Q1 will allow two additional riders to progress to Q2 in order to determine, at the end of Q2, the starting grid for the weekend. The start of the 11 lap Sprint race – the first ever in Aragon – will be on Saturday at 3:00 p.m., and the start of the 23 lap Grand Prix is scheduled for Sunday 1 September at 2:00 p.m.

Riding The Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 And Vitpilen 401: Bigger, Better Arrows

The 2024 Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 in the Santa Monica mountains. Photo by Ryan Sarancha/courtesy Husqvarna.
