Roadracing World subscribers were offered a chance to win a pair of tickets to the Indianapolis round of the MotoGP World Championship by writing a brief essay about the motorcycle road racing experience that made them fans of the sport. Pole Position Travel, which sponsored young Benny Solis Jr. as he raced in the 2009 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup series, supplied the tickets, won by reader Jon Meyers of Iowa with a tale of watching Kenny Roberts racing at Laguna. Robert’s iron will to win was on display, Meyers said, as King Kenny literally kicked a bent exhaust system back into place during the race and stormed back to the front. In his winning essay, Meyers wrote: The most memorable race I have ever attended was when I was probably 16 or 17 years old. It was a race at Laguna Seca, I don’t remember exactly when. It was Kenny Roberts’ last race at Laguna. We had made the trek all the way from Iowa to see King Kenny for the last time. It came down to a dual between Randy Mamola and Kenny. The epic battle looked to be a disappointment at first. Kenny started dropping back in the field and we were trying to figure out what was going on. All the way from Iowa only to see Kenny retire early. That sucked. Then all of a sudden we saw Kenny kicking his bike as he was ripping down the straight. Apparently he clipped someone and his exhaust got bent, and it was sticking out. Before we knew it Kenny was on the charge. He was blazing through the field and finally caught up to Randy. The battle was on again and Kenny ended up winning the race. It was amazing. I am getting goose bumps just thinking about it. It was at this point that I was hooked on motorcycle road racing.
