FIRST PERSON/OPINION Via e-mail: It was with great sadness to hear of the passing of Jim Lindemann. I have never formally met Jim Lindemann except for a few discussions while working at AMA Pro Racing events. Jim was absolutely one of the pioneers in modern AMA Pro Racing suspension technologies and his passing is a loss that many probably need to take a moment to reflect upon. When I first started racing many years ago, one could only hope to have “Lindemann” work their racebike’s suspension for their racing endeavors. As the years passed, many other names have emerged in the marketplace. As more names have appeared and time has passed, some don’t realize what Lindemann helped start in the racing industry that has grown tremendously since he first entered the “racing scene.” His many innovations and technical understanding were ahead of his many competitors for many years. Many suspension professionals tend to be narcissistic about “who does what”¦and how it works,” but the fact of the matter is that many suspension techs learned a lot by looking at his work during a “service.” In that circumstance many won’t properly thank Jim Lindemann for his contribution to not only the industry, but their respective knowledge base. I can attest of at least a few “top national suspension guys” that openly talked shop with me and many times the conversation went to, “¦yeah I looked at what Lindemann was doing and”¦” I was fortunate to become a top National suspension provider (#1 Traxxion Dynamics re-seller in the U.S. in 2004) and have many hundreds of winners, national & regional champions, and numerous track records as a result of my work, but it would be disingenuous to not acknowledge that Jim Lindeman contributed in showing me (as well as many others) a “better way.” I was never able to call Jim Lindemann a friend, business associate, or anything that would resemble a formal business relationship, but I will openly thank the fact that he significantly contributed not only to the advancement of racing in this country, but to my own success and most likely a very many others. I hope his family during this time of grieving can understand the great many people he influenced and that the name of Jim Lindemann will in no way be quickly forgotten. Marcus McBain Houston, Texas FIRST PERSON/OPINION Via e-mail: Sad day, this. I remember seeing all these winning racers during the early 1990s with their square white on black “LE” decals and figured they were on to something and would give Jim Lindemann a go. The first set of suspension I sent him was off our 1991 ZX-7R”¦ and I have been working with him ever since. Jim’s tuning experience was amazing, he could bounce a crap-handling bike back into perfection like no other, and preferred modifying parts over selling expensive aftermarket kits. I recall telling him a story about Dave Sadowski bouncing a wayward handling Bimota back into shape at Daytona and he just said “I showed him that” and it was true, his riders list was a who’s who of famous American and Canadian road racers. The fact that some of his valving developments are in OEM use to this day hints as to the level of Jim’s suspension knowledge. During the last few years I know that even with his health issues, Jim was trying to move into track day suspension service, but was having trouble with some of the local track day companies setting up exclusive support deals with others. We talked Jim into helping us at the Laguna Seca and Infineon DSB rounds in 2010 and it was great seeing him in his element and watching the steady stream of past and present racers visiting him…we just won our fourth WMRRA #1 plate with Jim’s help and support and it’s very sad knowing it’s our last.
