Pinkstaff Takes Over The Lead In The Clubman Championship During Round 6 Of The OMRRA Formula Ultra Championship September 17-18 at Portland International Raceway.

The rain-soaked penultimate round shook up the standings in the Clubman Championship. A lot of new faces were on the podium due to the fortitude to conquer the challenging weather conditions.

Kevin Pinkstaff of Portland, OR inched ahead of Matt Presting in the points lead under grey skies. While Pinkstaff managed to get on the podium with a 3rd in 750 Superbike, Presting struggled to accumulate points in the two classes that feed his championship bid.

Sitting firmly in second spot in the Formula Ultra Championship, Sam Verderico of East Wenatchee, WA was able to put together a string of podiums in Open Supersport, 600 Supersport and 600 Superbike to put himself in the hunt for the Clubman Championship as well. Verderico sits just two points back from Presting and nine points adrift of the leading Pinkstaff.

Veteran WMRRA racer and relative newcomer to OMRRA, Ryan Sutton of Camano Island, WA came away from the weekend with two wins and a 2nd throwing his hat into the chase.

Another spoiler to the front runners this weekend, was Jason Gasparinatos of Vancouver, B.C. Gasparinatos surprised the front runners and took home two 2nd place finishes.

Andy Dibrino continues to rack up points and dominate the 650 middleweights and moving himself into the 4th position in the championship.

In Formula Championship news, Alan Schmidt, OMRRA’s 7-time #1 plate holder of Kamloops, British Columbia, took a win on Saturday and a 2nd on Sunday on his ‘B’ bike, further distancing himself from the competition in his bid for an 8th title. Fellow Canadian and wet-weather specialist, Tony Porter took both a win and a 3rd place in Formula Ultra to keep his championship hopes alive. Porter sits just 9 points behind Kevin Pinkstaff and 19 points behind Sam Verderico, who both struggled for results in the rain. Pinkstaff, despite catapulting himself to the top of the Clubman Championship this round, would have to settle for 4th and 6th place points in the Formula Ultra Championship.

In Saturday’s race, Pinkstaff inched Verderico at the line, relegating him to 5th. Despite Saturday’s disappointing result, Verderico managed a 3rd in Sunday’s race keeping Pinkstaff at bay in the championship run. Having only participated in a couple rounds with OMRRA, Mark DeGross proved to be a spoiler in Saturday’s race, taking 2nd place points from the contenders. DeGross, however, would crash out of Sunday’s race while pushing his way to the front. The sparks will fly for the final round in October, wet or dry.

In the Vintage Championship, Cody Wood thrived under the adverse conditions and put his classic CL175 on every step of the box; twice on 2nd. The teenage Wood’s impressive run this year puts him well ahead of the rest of the championship players. With Chris Page’s absence this weekend, Ryan Shanahan and Andrew Pignataro, who were separated by one point going into the weekend had an opportunity to close the gap to Page who sits second in the championship. Shanahan battled Wood to the line, beating him by less than a half a second to take his second consecutive double in 250 Vintage. With two DNF’s, Andrew Pignataro lost ground and position to Shanahan but a win and a 2nd keeps Pignataro in the hunt.

A first in OMRRA history, the Middleweight Superbike class lined up against an Electric Superbike, the Motoczysz E1PC. For the first time at PIR, a duel between fossil fueled bikes and an electric superbike. The E1PC took on Suzuki SV650’s and a Kawasaki EX650. Adding intrigue to the event, the electric powered E1PC would have to contend with rain. Would this be akin to throwing a toaster a bathtub? The E1PC suffered no such shortcomings, proving itself a worthy adversary to the petrol-powered machines in the wet. The E1PC’s monstrous torque shredded the competition going from 6th to 1st down Portland International Raceway’s long front straight entering the second lap. For the next seven laps, the E1PC would gap the field by over 30 seconds. Unfortunately, the E1PC pulled out of the race on lap 8 and was immediately shrouded in secrecy. Officials speculated the E1PC shredded the rain tire. Up until the last race of the weekend (Open Superbike), which was run under drying conditions, the E1PC held the fastest lap time (ended up 4th quickest). Motoczysz expressed interest in returning for another round of fossil versus electric.
