Josh Hayes won the AMA Formula Xtreme race at Infineon Raceway Saturday, beating Erion Honda teammate Aaron Gobert by 1.156 seconds. Steve Rapp finished third on his Attack Kawasaki. Second-fastest-qualifier Michael Barnes crashed in Turn Two on the warm-up lap and was transported to the track medical center with a suspected broken wrist. Barnes then went by private vehicle to Novato Community Hospital for X-rays. The start was delayed because Barnes was lying in an impact zone. Hayes lost the lead to Gobert late in the race when he bobbled and was kicked out of the seat heading through Turn Two, but retook the lead with a few laps to go with an aggressive pass. Gobert’s last-lap attempt to retake the lead ended when he ran off the pavement and onto the dirt in the final chicane, letting Hayes home free. Results 1. Josh Hayes (Hon CBR600RR), Dunlop 2. Geoff May was fifth fastest on his M4 EMGO Suzuki GSX-R600, with Rapp’s teammate Ben Attard seventh quickest and May’s teammate Michael Barnes setting the tenth-best time of the session. In Supersport qualifying Rapp nabbed the inside slot of row two with the fifth quickest time, just past two hundredths of a second from pole-sitter Jamie Hacking’s time. Barnes, May and Attard placed seventh, eighth and ninth on the grid, respectively, all using Pirelli’s standard DOT Diablo Supercorsa tires. On the big bikes of Superstock, Geoff May was fourth quickest in practice for the M4 EMGO Suzuki team, later finding more speed to claim third on the grid during qualifying for Sunday’s race. Meanwhile, Roadracingworld.com Suzuki’s Chris Ulrich and Robertino Pietri earned eighth and 12th on the grid, where they will take their places for the race on the second and third rows. Joining these regulars are Scott Jenson at ninth on the grid and James Randolph in tenth, like the others using the regular race version of Pirelli’s Diablo Superbike Slicks. In Formula Xtreme action Ben Attard posted the third best time in the morning warm up, with his Attack Kawasaki teammate Steve Rapp right with him with the fourth quickest time. Michael Barnes was sixth on his M4 EMGO Suzuki GSX-R600, and Cory West was eighth with his Team Hunter Yamaha YZF-R6. Drama unfolded on the warm up lap with Barnes falling off, breaking his arm. But Pirelli still managed the podium with Rapp placing third behind Joshua Hayes and Aaron Gobert, giving him his third podium finish for the season and securing second-place in the FX championship. Attard rode Rapp’s sister ZX-6R home to fourth while West finished seventh. For those keeping score, Rapp raced on 16.5-inch Diablo Superbike tires, specifically an SC3 front and SC2 rear, while Attard used an SC1 front and SC2 rear. Cory West used Pirelli’s 17-inch Diablo Supercorsa standard SC1 front and rear tires.
