Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jamie Hacking and Team M4 EMGO Suzuki’s Geoff May were lucky to walk away from a spectacular incident at the front of the field on the first lap of the AMA Supersport race at Barber Motorsports Park. Hacking was third and tried to take second from May’s teammate Michael Barnes on the inside of the final corner. Hacking said he loaded his front tire too much and lost traction. Hacking tried to save the lowside, but his ZX-6R eventually spun out. May was a few bikelengths behind Hacking and starting his drive onto the front straight but hit Hacking’s prone Kawasaki. Hacking’s Kawasaki shielded him from getting run over by May, but May’s Suzuki hit the motorcycle like a ramp, sending May and his GSX-R600 flying through the air. Hacking jumped to his feet, put his arms in the air to become more visible, stood still and the entire 40-plus-bike field avoided him. May quickly got to his feet and got off the racetrack. May’s GSX-R600 was too damaged to continue in the race. At post time it was unknown if Hacking’s Kawasaki could be repaired in time for the restart of the race. Update: Hacking’s Kawasaki was too damaged to continue. Even though a complete restart was called for, the race was considered to have officially started and May and Hacking were not allowed to restart on their back-up bikes. As far as injuries go, Hacking reported being very sore, and May said he has a severely bruised right hip but no bone fractures, according to X-rays taken at the track’s medical center.
