AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer and two-time AMA Grand National Champion Gary Nixon died today at St. Joseph Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland, due to complications from a heart attack he suffered July 29. He was 70 years old. “I just wanted to let you know that Gary Nixon died this morning,” Mike Sponseller, a friend of Nixon’s for nearly 40 years, told Roadracingworld.com. “Evidently, he underwent some sort of procedure this morning and went to the recovery room, but he never made it out of recovery.” According to Sponseller, Nixon was admitted to the hospital July 29 with problems breathing and chest pains and suffered a heart attack later that night. He had two stents inserted in his arteries early on the morning of July 30 and spent several days in Intensive Care waiting for his blood pressure to rise enough for him to undergo bypass surgery.
