John Surtees R.I.P.: ​Racing Legend Dies At Age 83

John Surtees, the only man to ever win both the Formula One World Championship and the 500cc Grand Prix World Championship, died today in a hospital in London, England, according to a report from the BBC. He had been suffering from respiratory problems. He was 83.

Surtees won four 500cc Grand Prix World Championships (1956, 1958, 1959 and 1960) and three 350cc Grand Prix World Championships (1958, 1959 and 1960) on motorcycles.

Surtees then switched to automobile racing and won the Formula One World Championship with a Ferrari in 1964.

According to the BBC, Surtees actively participated in motorsports events as recently as 2016.
