Wagnon Wins Three CMRA Races, Sets New Track Record At Repaved Hallett Motor Racing Circuit

Derek Wagnon set a new lap record of a blazing 1:14.371 and took three podiums during the CMRA/ WERA National Challenge combined sprint event Sunday, May 18, 2014 at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit. An early morning rain gave way to gusty winds and sunshine making conditions good for fast laps on the 1.8 mile freshly repaved twisting course nestled in the rolling hills by Hallett, Oklahoma. Large grids and a great spectator turnout made for some great racing action .

Wagnon once again rode two Pirelli-shod bikes to take the wins in B Superstock Expert on his Suzuki GSX-R750, and 212Decals.com – A Superbike, and Houston Superbikes – Heavyweight Twins Expert with his KTM RC8. He went on to set a new lap record during Sunday’s Formula 1 Expert race.

The headline race of the day, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing Formula 1 Expert Race had an impressive 22 bike grid, and as the starting lights went out, Wagnon shot out to an early lead aboard his KTM RC8. He was stretching on his lead over Brandon Cleland, running second aboard his Yamaha YZF-R6 and ran a 1:14.6 on lap two of the race. Wagnon continued the charge, turning an even faster 1:14.371 and setting the new lap record on lap three. Holding the lead going into lap four of the 10-lap race, Wagnon lost his footing going into the infamous “Bus Stop” turn and went down. Cleland took over the lead, with Kawasaki ZX636-mounted Conner Blevins and Dewayne Davis on a Suzuki GSX-R1000 in hot pursuit. The race continued its blistering pace, with the top 10 race leaders turning times below 1:20.5 seconds. Cleland ran incredibly strong, turning a fastest lap of 1:15.291, holding off Blevins and gapping Davis by 6 seconds. As the checkers fell, Cleland took the win 4.994 seconds over Blevins.Davis held off Eddie Thornton for third, with Eric Williams, Brandon Young, Jeffrey Purk, Jay Newton, Brad Kelly, and Ryan Ambrose rounding out the top 10.

Brandon Cleland also won the $100 P1 Racing cash purse for riding the first 600 across the finish line during the Formula 1 race. Bringing awareness to finding a cure for Breast Cancer is an important aspect of this race and a donation is made by the CMRA to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation for each entry in the race.

Cleland went on to take three more podiums, grabbing the wins in South Central Race Center – C Superstock Expert, Team Mancuso Powersports SW – C Superbike Expert, and second in B Superstock Expert. This was his first weekend back at Hallett after a racing incident at this same track left him with a severely broken leg two years ago.

Conner Blevins, from Noble, Oklahoma also had a very impressive run on Sunday with seven podiums total, taking the win in Team Mancuso Powersports SW – B Superbike Expert, second in South Central Race Center – C Superstock Expert, Formula 1 Expert, Team Mancuso Powersports SW – C Superbike Expert, and third in B Superstock Expert, Raceworx – A Superstock Expert, and 212Decals.com – A Superbike.

Jim Whitten ran strong in Lightweights with four podiums with his Ducati 1000SS, taking the wins in Lightweight Twins Expert, Formula 2 Expert, Formula 40 Lightweight Expert and third in D Superbike Expert.

Tim Rose took Top Novice again with three wins on his Yamaha YZF-R6 in Lone Star Track Days – B Superstock Novice, Moto Liberty – C Superstock Novice, and North Texas Superbikes – B Superbike Novice.

More, from a press release issued by South Central Race Center:

The CMRA had its races at the Hallet Motor Circuit last weekend. The racers were greeted with a brand new surface that presented challenges in both tire choice and bike setup. Derek Wagnon racked up wins in Superstock B, Superbike A and Heavyweight Twins. While in route to those wins, Derek set a new lap record of 1:14.371. Riding his P1 Racing prepared KTM RC8RS, with Pirelli Diablo Superbike slicks. Standard SC2 front compound and SC0 rear compounds were used, incidentally these were the same compounds used to set the previous lap record at the Hallett facility.

The owner of South Central Race Center, John Hutchinson, was quoted as saying “I knew we had a challenge coming here with the new pavement. It is only weeks old, and that can be a tough thing to work with. P1 Racing had the Ohlins stuff working great, it just came down to getting the right tire working with this new track surface. All in all I am very proud of what Derek has accomplished here. Pirelli won almost every race this weekend, and that shows how good the product really is. We won races on a large variety of bikes, big and small.”

South Central Race Center is the exclusive Pirelli tire distributor for the CMRA and surrounding region. They can be reached at www.scracecenter.com or email at [email protected]
