Pretty Hate Machine and Team Camacho/Doolan Take it All at MotorSport Ranch with CMRA

The Pretty Hate Machine team of Jesse Davis, Will Gruy, Alan Phillips, and David Tiede brought home the win in the fourth round of the Ultra-Lightweight Endurance series while the JC Camacho/Nick Doolan team, fresh off MotoAmerica rounds, brought home the overall Team 60 win this past Saturday, July 23, 2016, at MotorSport Ranch. The Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association (CMRA) began its sixth round of the season on Saturday with a 6-Hour Ultra-Lightweight Endurance, Mini and Lightweight Sprints, and Team 60 race, bringing over 10 hours of racing action to MotorSport Ranch in Cresson, Texas. Brutally hot weather in the high 90’s to low 100’s and a radiant heat of 145 degrees made for grueling conditions. However, competitors stayed strong as the lap times stayed fast on the 1.7 mile, clockwise course.

Jesse Smartt grabbed three podiums, with two wins in E Superstock Novice and E Superbike Novice and second in Altus Lawton Motorsports Ultra-Lightweight GP Novice with his Kawasaki 250R. Young Ryan Deutschlander had his first set of podium sweeps, winning both Aces High Racing – Formula 8 races with his Kawasaki KLX110.

Despite the heat, 44 teams signed up for the 6-Hour Ultra-Lightweight endurance race, with the endurance classes of Road & Track Suspension – 500 Superstock, The Bike Doctors – 500 Classic, Altus Lawton Motorsports – Ultra-Lightweight GP, Road & Track Suspension – E Superstock, and Formula 4 represented. As the teams lined up for the start, three-time champion team Pretty Hate Machine (Jesse Davis, Will Gruy, Alan Phillips, and David Tiede) on their Honda RVF400 prepared to defend their Number One plate again. The start lights went out, and as the group shook itself out, SLOW Kids at Play team of Ashley Azare, Dylan Deutschlander, Jay Newton, and Brylin Schrock on a Yamaha YZF-R3 shot out in the lead, with Honda CBR500R mounted Team Von Hertell/Harris Hill, Pretty Hate Machine and Speedlab, also riding a Yamaha YZF-R3, on their heels. SLOW Kids at Play held the lead for the first hour of the race. A three bike pile up caused a red flag to be brought out.

As the teams got away on the restart, it was time for the first round of pit stops. During this window, Pretty Hate Machine got away cleanly, taking over the lead and holding off the Speedlab team of Bill Syfan, Garet Tomlinson and Harry Tomlinson and Team Von Hertell/Harris Hill team of Jon Bell, John Branch, Keith Hertell, Nick Montonaro and Manny Segura while MiniMotion slipped up from behind, passing both of them and taking over second place during Hour 2.

The afternoon wore on and the heat started taking its toll. The SKDZ Racing team of Zachary Boldwyn, Stephen Guynes and Derek Thomas rode their Honda CBR500R past Team Von Hertell/Harris Hill, and SLOW Kids at Play made a comeback from seventh, making it up to third behind the MiniMotion team of Chris Headley, Jeff Hughes, Ryan Maj Johnson and John Orchard. Lots of good dicing was going on all the way to the back of the pack, and as the race leaders held their positions.

Pretty Hate Machine had stretched their lead to one lap over the entire field as the final hour wore down, taking the checkers for the overall and The Bike Doctors – 500 Classic Endurance win for the fourth time in a row. MiniMotion was solid, holding second place for the last four hours of the race, crossed the line second overall and first in Road & Track Suspension – 500 Superstock Endurance. SLOW Kids at Play were next, crossing the line third overall and first in Altus Lawton Motorsports – Ultra Lightweight GP Endurance, followed by Speedlab who finished fourth overall and second in Altus Lawton Motorsports – Ultra Lightweight GP Endurance. SKDZ Racing was next, with fifth overall and second in Road & Track Suspension – 500 Superstock Endurance, and Team Von Hertell/Harris Hill rounded out the top six, finishing sixth overall and third in Road & Track Suspension – 500 Superstock Endurance.

The final race of the day was the Race Tire Service/Dunlop – Team 60 race, and the popular LeMans-style start was used to start the grid of 16 teams.

The action started with Cory Burleson of the Burleson/Montgomery team getting the holeshot on his Suzuki GSX-R600 with Nick Doolan of the Camacho/Doolan team riding a Yamaha YZF-R6 on his tail. Meanwhile, Garet Tomlinson riding a Yamaha YZF-R6 for team Tomlinson/Tomlinson was holding off both Alonzo Contreras of the Contreras/Orchard pairing, also aboard a Suzuki GSX-R600, and Yamaha YZF-R1M mounted Robert Duncan of Duncan/Vigneau as they chased the leaders for third.

The classes of Heavyweight, Middleweight, and Lightweight were represented, and the racing stayed close, as the pit lane opened and the rider swaps started taking place. JC Camacho of Camacho/Doolan immediately grabbed the lead on his Yamaha YZF–R6, as Craig Montgomery took to the track on his Suzuki GSX-R1000 in hot pursuit of Camacho. Camacho responded by throwing down the fastest lap of the race with a 1:17.471. During the handoff, John Orchard for the Contreras/Orchard team got away a little better, slipped into third ahead of Duncan/Vigneau and Tomlinson/Tomlinson. When the checkers dropped at 6 pm, Camacho/Doolan took the overall and Middleweight win, Burleson/Montgomery took second overall and the Heavyweight win. Contreras/Orchard crossed next with third overall and second in Middleweight, followed by Duncan/Vigneau for fourth overall and second in Heavyweight. Tomlinson/Tomlinson crossed next with fifth overall and third in Middleweight, with Martins/Wrobel rounding out the top six with sixth overall and third in Heavyweight.
