Cleland Goes Five For Five at MSR Houston; Grabs Overall Number One Plate with CMRA

Brandon Cleland once again rose above the competition, riding his Pirelli-shod, RES prepped Yamaha YZF-R6 to three wins during the Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association’s (CMRA) 10th and final round of Bridgestone/CMRA Championship sprints this past Sunday, October 30, on the 17-turn, 2.38 mile road course at MSR Houston, Angleton, Texas.

Overnight condensation made for some slick spots in practice, but as the weather warmed up to the mid-80’s, the track came in for great lap times. Cleland threw down, riding his RES-prepped, Pirelli-shod Yamaha YZF-R6 to wins in M4/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert, 212Decals.com – A Superbike Expert, B Superbike Expert, C Superbike Expert, and South Central Race Center – C Superstock Expert classes. The wins locked Cleland in for the coveted CMRA’s overall Number One plate; his second time winning it in three years.

Danny Dominguez was once again the standout for the Lightweights, riding his (Classic-classification 1997) Suzuki GSX-R600 to four wins in: Classic, Century Trucks and Vans – Formula 40 Lightweight Expert, Century Trucks and Vans – D Superbike Expert, Formula 40 Middleweight Expert, and second in Century Trucks and Vans – Formula 2 Expert, with a fastest of lap of 1:38.869 on Lap 6 of Race 22 – D Superbike Expert.

Morning qualifying for Sunday’s headline race, M4/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert was exciting, with lap times in the mid to high 40s, with Brandon Cleland on his Yamaha YZF-R6, Craig Montgomery aboard his Kawasaki ZX-10R, and Brandon Young, also on a Kawasaki ZX-10R, grabbing the top three spots.

The 18-bike grid lined up, Cleland had pole position, with Montgomery in the middle, and Young on the outside of the front row. The start lights went out, and Cleland got the holeshot and put his head down, immediately getting a lead over the rest of the field. Montgomery and Young got caught up in traffic, with some close swapping as the pack headed over the launch. Yamaha YZF-R6 mounted Garet Tomlinson shot up to battle for second, with Cleland staying just out of reach as they headed into Lap 2. Cleland wasted no time and threw down a lightning fast 1:33.755 with Tomlinson answering with a 1:34.882, and Montgomery showing a 1:35.652, just ahead of Young with a 1:35.530. BMW S1000RR mounted Joseph Caruso held fifth with a firm grip, thwarting the advance of JD Mosley, also on a BMW S1000RR, while Chris Hamlett aboard a Yamaha YZF-R6 tangled with Yamaha R1M mounted Steven Nedd. Allan Campbell riding a Suzuki GSX-R1000 wrestled with Paul Garcia riding a Kawasaki ZX-10R.

As Tomlinson chased Cleland, they started opening a gap on the rest of the field. Cleland held his lead with an iron fist, eluding Tomlinson’s grasp as they continued to outdistance the rest of the field. On the final lap of the race, Cleland was on fire, stretching his lead to 5.890 over second and taking the checkers for the win. Tomlinson crossed the line second, almost 8 seconds ahead of Montgomery, with Young crossing fourth, a mere 0.2 seconds right behind him. Caruso, Mosley, and Hamlett followed, with Nedd, Campbell, and Garcia, finishing out the top 10. Cleland also grabbed the P1 Racing $100 purse for being the first 600 rider across the line.

Top Novice was Jeff Offutt, taking four wins with his BMW S1000RR, topping the box in OnRoad OffRoad Suspension – A Superstock Novice, North Texas Superbikes – A Superbike Novice, SpeedFreakDecals.com – Formula 1 Novice, and Crazy Jack’s Powersports – Formula 40 HW Novice, turning a fastest lap of 1:38.839 on Lap 3 of Race 8, the A Supestock race.

The Jennifer Millsap “Get it Girl” $100 award, sponsored by A. C. Horn, went to Shandra Crawford for her combined finishes in Formula F1 Ladies, HW Twins Expert, and Formula 40MW Expert aboard her Triumph Daytona 675R.

The new “Racer’s Race” award went to Hector Barreto for having a few issues and the most amazing save of the weekend on his Suzuki GSX-R750, grabbing two podiums and another top five finish in his other classes, with a fastest lap of 139.130 on Lap 6 of Race 13, A Superbike Novice.
