Jeff Tigert won the Willow Springs Motorcycle (WSMC) Toyota Cup Formula One Unlimited Grand Prix at round 11 of the 12-round WSMC series, Sunday, November 20 at Willow Springs International Raceway in Rosamond, California. But the star of the show was Kenny Kopecky, who clinched the 2005 WSMC overall Championship with a four-win performance. Short on tire money, Marin Cycleworks’ Tigert skipped Saturday practice, choosing to not roll his HRC-kitted Honda CBR1000RR Superbike onto the track until Sunday morning. But the second-generation racer quickly got up to speed, taking the lead of the Formula One race on the second lap, just before turning a 1:21.3 to break away and a string of mid-1:22s to win the 12-lap race by over 15 seconds. After Tigert took the lead, Bike World/Leo Vince’s Tony Meiring and Roadracingworld.com Suzuki’s Chris Ulrich swapped second place all the way to the checkered flag. Meiring held the position on the final lap. Ulrich planned to draft Meiring from the final corner to the finish line, but Ulrich, looking for the ultimate drive out of the final corner, turn nine, got his GSX-R1000 sideways at well over 100 mph and had to roll out of the throttle. Meiring took second, with Ulrich third. Earlier in the day, Ulrich beat Meiring in the Open Modified Production race and also won in Open Superbike on his Pirelli-slick shod machine. Oceanside Aprilia-Ducati’s Kopecky clinched the 2005 WSMC overall Championship with four race wins on his Dunlop-shod Ducatis: Formula Twins, Heavyweight Twins, Middleweight Twins and 650cc Superbike. More, from a press release issued by Kenny Kopecky: San Diegan Kenny Kopecky rode each of his Ducati Oceanside prepared racebikes (749R and 999R) to a pair of wins Sunday at Willow Springs Raceway. In doing so, he has clinched the Overall Track Championship with one round remaining in the 2005 WSMC series. Kopecky actually clinched the overall in the first race of the day in winning 650 Superbike by over 7 seconds ahead of Jeff Tigert and Sam Carnibucci. “It was our first time into the 1:24’s on the 749R, the conditions were great early in the day and our Ducati and Dunlops were awesome. We really seemed to have an advantage in the fast corners over some of the other guys, they looked uncomfortable while we were on the proverbial rails!” Kenny said after the race. Going straight back to the grid for the second race of the day Kenny took an 11th straight win in BOTT Middleweight, and followed that up mid-day with wins on the team’s 999R in BOTT Heavyweight and Formula Twins. The class titles in the three Twins classes that Kopecky competes in were clinched two months ago, but the December meet will determine the WSMC 750 Superbike class title. Kopecky won four straight races mid-season in the class but contender Richie Thorup had placed ahead of the Ducati racer the last several events and is only 1 point behind point leader Kopecky going into the season finale on December 18th. On Sunday Kopecky was leading the 750 Superbike race after a great start and quick first lap but erred on the brakes into turn 1 starting the second lap and ran off the racecourse. The off-road excursion saw the Ducati re-enter over 20 seconds behind the leaders. Kenny recovered to 4th at the finish of the short sprint race and said “We’ll give it a go next month…our goals have all been met in the other classes and running back-to-back races all year has been great training. The Superbike class has been fun but I’m surprised at the low level of entrants the last few meets…it’s a lot more fun to race in the bigger fields. I’ve been a little weak this weekend anyway, after the Toyota 200 weekend last month my mother had surgery for breast cancer so we’ve been totally occupied with that…no training or anything for 5 weeks now. The surgery went well and she’s doing pretty good. Her love, prayer and support were with us 100% to get out to Willow this weekend and win this thing, and she was so very happy to hear of the race success on Sunday evening. We’re looking forward to a nice Thanksgiving together and wish to thank everyone who has helped out us this season. Big thanks go to Ducati North America, all the guys at Ducati Oceanside, Dunlop, Maxima, Suomy USA, Z Leathers, TrackDaz, VP, FactoryEffex and O’Neal USA. My wife Dana has been so wonderful, and we greatly appreciated the many congratulations and words of support throughout the year. We thank you all!”
