TOP FIVE FOR TEAM HAMMER’S MCFADDEN IN NEW JERSEY
The performance of M4 medAge Suzuki’s Nick McFadden proved to be the lone bright spot for Team Hammer on a wet and gloomy day of racing on Saturday at New Jersey Motorsports Park.
Valentin Debise and his M4 ECSTAR Suzuki GSX-R600 were sidelined after the Frenchman was declared unfit to race Saturday morning due to lingering effects of a concussion suffered in Supersport Race 2 at Pittsburgh International Race Complex; Debise had passed multiple concussion protocol tests in France and again on Thursday at NJMP prior to a retest on Saturday. Prior to the retest, Debise made just three laps in final qualifying before pulling in and reporting that he did not feel well–yet he still qualified second quickest. Complicating matters, Debise exhibited systems of dehydration after a sweltering Friday.
McFadden stepped up in Debise’s absence to compete near the front of the field in the day’s Supersport contest.
The Kentuckian got away strongly from Row 3 and quickly established himself in the lead pack as the day’s wet and wild MotoAmerica Supersport Race 1 took shape. His battle up front pulled him clear of the fight behind, allowing him to cruise home to an eventual fifth place result. The result was McFadden’s seventh top-five finish of the 2018 season.
McFadden said, “I had a good Race 1 here at New Jersey Motorsports Park. I qualified eighth and got a good start. I was running fourth for the first few laps and tagged on to the leaders for as long as I could. I kept pace and eventually built up over twenty seconds back to sixth. I didn’t quite have the pace to fight for the podium, but I was able to maintain the gap and bring home another top-five finish and collect some good points.”
Meanwhile, it was a day to forget for the remainder of Team Hammer. Besides Debise being ruled out from taking part on Saturday, M4 ECSTAR Suzuki Superbike star Jake Lewis and M4 RiCK! Suzuki’s Daytona Anderson crashed in their respective races. Lewis managed to remount to finish eighth in the Superbike race while Anderson DNF the Supersport final.
The squad will look for a brighter Sunday as Debise will be re-evaluated and McFadden, Lewis, and Anderson will get another shot at the second half of the weekend doubleheader to conclude the penultimate round of the 2018 MotoAmerica AMA/FIM North American Road Racing Championship season at NJMP.
