Round 3 of the Law Tigers’ Sandia Motorcycle Roadracing Championships hosted by SMRI was held at Sandia Motor Speedway on Sunday, July 17, 2016 in conjunction with ASMA. SMRI’s regulars were joined by ASMA’s brightest including Jason Brown, Joe Janiga, Greg Talbot and several others to compete for the New Mexico North/South Challenge Cup.

Mikey Shreve continued his winning ways by placing first in Unlimited Grand Prix, Expert Formula 1000, and Expert Open Superbike classes.Mikey is looking to wrest the #1 plate from Kevin Gibson, who has held it for the past two years, and looks poised to do so in convincing fashion! No competitor came within striking distance of Shreve in the last half of any of these three races, and Gibson will need to recover quickly from an ankle injury sustained during MotoAmerica qualifying in Austin if he has any chance of retaining the #1 plate for a third year.

Scott Cloninger won his first race of the season in the Amateur Thunderbike class followed up by victory in Amateur 250 Supersport, where he took the lead in both championships by three points over Greg Sterosky in Thunderbike and by two points over Steve Brown in 250 Supersport. Cloninger’s wins were backed up by second place finishes in Amateur Club Sport and Amateur 500 Supersport.

Edda Tully claimed the top step of the podium in Formula Femme competition for the third time this year cementing her position as the fastest female racer at SMRI. Edda is strutting her stuff after a two-year hiatus and appears to be back on pace with “the boys” demonstrating strong skills in Amateur GTU and Expert Open Superbike, as well!

Kelcey Walker took the lead in the Expert Middleweight Superbike class by five points over Chazz Neiderman breaking the tie established in Round 2. This looks to be one of the more interesting contests at SMRI this year, as these two veterans go at each other to determine a class champion.

Round 4 will be held on August 21 at Sandia Motor Speedway. For more information please visit www.smri-racing.org.
