Moto2 pre-season testing continues on day two in Jerez

The Caterham Moto Racing team were back on track today for the second day of testing in Jerez.
With dry weather conditions the first Moto2 / Moto3 combined session saw a prompt drop in times as 33 riders headed out to take advantage of the increased surface grip.
Johann Zarco was one of the first to improve his time achieving a 1:43.719 on his sixth lap. Focussing his attentions on staying with the leaders Zarco didn’t stop there and finished the second day with a personal best of 1:43.216 just 0.701 off P1.
A small crash on turn seven hindered Josh Herrin’s initial improvement in the morning’s session. Escaping unhurt and with little damage to the bike, the mechanics swiftly got to work on the #2 Caterham Suter, before the Moto2 rookie took back to the track to put in an impressive final time of 1:43.732.
Johann Zarco: “All the team are happy today as we are improving as planned and the gap to the front is becoming smaller. For sure we still have some work to do to become faster and understand the geometry of the chassis better, but step by step we are setting up the bike well.
“We did many laps today and I felt good on the Caterham Suter. I hope tomorrow the dry weather lasts and we can continue going forward.”
Josh Herrin: “This morning I had a small crash as I was waiting to follow someone and let the tyres cool down too much. Luckily there wasn’t much damage and I was able to head back out pretty quickly.
“Today I managed to do 43’s consistently so I’m pleased with that and looking forward to tomorrow.”

SIMEON LOOKING FOR MORE REAR GRIP AT JEREZ. BALDASSARRI ON A STEEP LEARNING CURVE
The Team Federal Oil Gresini Moto2 and Xavier Siméon continued today at Jerez Circuit their work in preparation for the 2014 season: after missing Almeria and Valencia testing sessions, Simeon was back in action only yesterday, and completed almost 100 laps today, finding at the end of the day a good set-up of his 2014 Suter. 1’43”387 his best lap of the day, which lowers by almost a second the lap time obtained yesterday.
As happened in the previous tests on Spanish soil, even in Jerez Lorenzo Baldassarri continued to show a steady improvement: the Italian, 56 laps for him today, set a great 1’43”598, making him one of the fastest Moto2 “rookies” on track.
Action will resume tomorrow for the third and final day of testing at the Andalusian track.
XAVIER SIMEON (1’43″387 – 95 LAPS)
“It’s been a very useful day of testing, because we found a good set-up from which to start tomorrow. Unfortunately, at the beginning my feeling during acceleration was bad and my lap times were always the same, either with new tyre or used. But then, working on the rear, we found more grip and the situation at the end of the day improved, and as a result even lap times dropped a bit. We can certainly do better, and tomorrow we’ll try to do it!”.
LORENZO BALDASSARRI (1’43″598 – 56 LAPS)
“I’m very satisfied, mainly because I was able to run at a good pace even when I was alone on the track, without other riders in front of me. Today I can say that we have taken another step forward: my riding style is now more profitable in both corner entry and acceleration. In the afternoon I did only a few laps trying not to fatigue myself: in fact we are planning a race simulation for tomorrow”.
FAUSTO GRESINI
“Siméon in this second day began to ride at a good pace: we must not forget that he missed the first two tests of 2014, therefore he needs to close a certain gap from his rivals, but he’s catching up in the right way and we are convinced that tomorrow he will improve again his lap times. I am also very pleased with the growth of Baldassarri, who has been able to consistently set good lap times for a rookie. We need positive days like this one: the important thing now is to continue in this direction”.
