Three-time GEICO Motorcycle AMA Pro National Guard Superbike Champion Josh Hayes is having a rough yet successful weekend at The New Jersey Lottery Devil’s Showdown at New Jersey Motorsports Park. On Friday, Hayes was the fastest rider in practice and qualifying, when he broke the three-year-old lap record with a 1:20.536 on his Monster Energy Graves Yamaha YZF-R1. But on his last qualifying lap, Hayes made a mistake, crashed and destroyed one of his Superbikes. Overnight, Hayes’ crew built him a new Superbike from the frame up for him to use alongside his original spare bike in Saturday morning’s final qualifying session. But during that session, both of Hayes’ motorcycles “became unstarted,” he said, meaning they quit running. Luckily for Hayes, lower ambient temperatures (61 degrees F on Saturday vs. 77 degrees F on Friday) prevented any rider in the field from going quicker in final qualifying. As a result, Hayes’ time from Friday held up to secure his seventh consecutive pole position of the season and the 29th Superbike pole position of his career. Josh Herrin, Hayes’ teammate and the current Championship point leader, had ambitions of earning his career-first Superbike pole position—and the bonus point that comes with it–on Saturday. But the Georgia rider was unable to go any quicker and ended up second overall with his 1:21.192 from Friday. Yoshimura Suzuki’s Martin Cardenas, currently second in the Championship point standings, also could not improve Saturday and qualified third with a 1:21.463. Cardenas said he was happy with the setup of his GSX-R1000. National Guard Suzuki’s Roger Hayden was the fastest rider in the chilly Saturday morning session with a 1:22.159, but he was unable to better his time from Friday, 1:21.517, and ended up fourth at the end of qualifying. Hayden then told reporters that he was disappointed that he wasn’t as competitive, so far, at New Jersey Motorsports Park as he has been at recent rounds.
