Sunday was just another day at the office for Yoshimura Suzuki’s Mat Mladin at California Speedway. The intense Australian took an early lead with his Dunlop-shod GSX-R1000 in the second AMA Superbike race of the weekend, pulled away with 1:25 lap times no one else could match and came home nearly 10 seconds ahead of second place.

Not only was the win the third consecutive of the 2004 season for Mladin, the four-time and defending AMA Superbike Champion, it also moved Mladin into first on the all-time AMA Superbike win list with 27 victories.

Ducati Austin’s Eric Bostrom was runner-up for the second day in a row. Erion Honda’s Jake Zemke improved from fourth Saturday to third today. And American Honda’s Miguel Duhamel passed teammate Ben Bostrom late in the race to take fourth. Ben Bostrom finished fifth, well clear of DXS Diablo Suzuki’s Steve Crevier. Prieto Racing’s Geoff May finished sixth, the highest-finishing privateer for the second day in a row. Triangle Cycles Yamaha’s Larry Pegram, Empire Racing Suzuki’s Lee Acree (who was riding in his third consecutive race of the day) and Hooters Suzuki’s Eric Wood completed the top 10. Lee’s Cycles/Roadracingworld.com’s Jeremy Toye finished 11th on a Yamaha YZF-R1 test bike, which was still equipped with stock suspension, stock exhaust system and stock bodywork with the headlight and taillight taped over.
