Vintage Road Racing Association Celebrates 25th Year

The Vintage Road Racing Association (VRRA), Canada’s only vintage and classic road racing club, celebrates its 25th anniversary in the coming 2005 racing season. The club kicked off the Silver Jubilee year with displays at booths in the MMIC Motorcycle Show December 3-5 2004, with booths also planned for The Supershow in Toronto in January 2005 and the Montreal Motorcycle Show and Quebec Motorcycle Show in February 2005. The VRRA will also hold special 25th anniversary activities at its racing events on the 2005 schedule:

June 4 or 5 (TBA): Tune Up Day: Cayuga, Ontario

June 19/20 : Quinte TT, Shannonville Motorsport Park, Shannonville, Ontario

July 23/24: Quebec GP, Autodrome St. Eustache, St. Eustache, Quebec

August 19/20/21: Vintage Festival, Mosport International Raceway, Bowmanville, Ontario

September 10/11: Runway Romp, North Bay Airport, North Bay, Ontario

Formed in 1980 following an initial vintage race at Mosport in 1979, the club has grown to approx. 400 members in Ontario, Quebec, the Maritime Provinces and the USA. The VRRA is an all-volunteer association creating and running its own racing events. The accent has always been to make vintage and classic racing fun and friendly despite fierce competition to the checkered flag. From its early base of mainly British immigrant founding members and riders the VRRA has grown steadily over the years and has formed mutually beneficial arrangements with other racing organizations such as the Sidecar Racers Association (SRA), Atlantic Motorcycle Competition Riders Association (AMCRA), the United States Classic Racing Association (USCRA), and Race Associates Canada Events (RACE).

In 2004 the premier VRRA event, the Vintage Festival, at the challenging 2.5 mile Mosport International Raceway attracted 316 competitors from Canada, the USA and Britain and it is expected that the Silver Jubilee event at this venue in 2005 will be an even bigger and more international event.

The VRRA’s events include races for bikes covering four classic periods: Period 1 to 1967, Period 2 to 1972, Period 3 to 1982 and Period 4 to 1989. Within each period there are classes for all capacities of racing motorcycles.

Ralf Scholtes, President of the VRRA, said, “We are planning to make our 25th anniversary a stellar year for vintage and classic road racing in Canada with special races at each event to celebrate this Silver Jubilee. Invitations are going out to all racing organizations who may wish to participate with us in our 25th year of vintage and classic racing, and we invite any individual riders to come and enjoy the fun.”

All the events provide programs, souvenirs and event T-shirts plus food concessions, and a track announcer to keep riders and visitors informed. Professional photographers capture the racing action for riders and fans. There are also special activities such as an all comers ‘Show n’ Shine,’ vintage and classic ‘Concours d’Elegance’, parade laps for road riders and racing sidecar rides for charity, celebrity guests, television coverage, bike parades and helicopter rides at selected events.
