Like any great adventure, there must come a time for all stories to end. The season finale of the 2016-2017 Chuckwalla Valley Motorcycle Association took place at the series’ round 7 on May 6-7. The weekend was terrorized with tricky and windy conditions, but never the less we still had some great racing!
The weekend kicked off with the small bikes battling it out in the Ultra Lightweight Shootout. Gray Pham and Gabriel Hernandez III revived a rivalry that’s lasted for years and began to fight at the front. The rivals were accompanied by Mark Fitzsimmons on his Honda NSF250R in the Ultra Lightweight Shootout races. Pham took the early lead in Saturday’s race, holding the lead till the very end before getting passed by Fitzsimmons at the line. Sunday’s race proved that Fitzsimmons would have to work hard to keep both Pham and Hernandez off the top step. In the end Fitzsimmons came out on the top step of both races.
In the Open classes, the show was run by CVMA regular Oleg Piankyh and challengers Justin Simons and Rookie Alex Fuller. Oleg stole the show on Saturday winning both Motorsport Exotica Supersport Open and Formula Open, leaving Justin Simons and Alex Fuller Trading second places in those two races.
With the wind storm Saturday night, Oleg decided not to show up on Sunday to race, leaving the door open for the the competition. Justin Simons got the hole shot and the early lead on his Next Level Cycles Kawasaki ZX-10R. Behind him the battle began to stir up. Alex Fuller lead the battle for 2nd, followed by Manny Segura, Jake Tihanyl, and Nick Ciling. Throughout the race, Ciling slowly began to make his way up to fourth place. As the race drew on, gaps began to form between the top three, but by the last lap 2nd through 5th were nose to tail. In the end, Simmons won running a lap of 1:51.2, followed by Fuller, Segura, and Ciling. “The shoot out went really well for me” said Simmons. “I just kept my head down and kept my laps as smooth as butter.”
In the FemmeWalla class, Sofia Amadio made the step up to a middleweight class machine, and immediately brought a challenge to Elaine Carpenter. Amadio got a blistering start and lead Carpenter into the first turn. Carpenter never gave up and held close to Amadio. In the end, Amadio took the win on Saturday in her 600 debut. On Sunday, Amadio suffered mechanical issues and Carpenter went on to take the win.
CVMA offers two full days of racing every race weekend and also includes Saturday qualifying for grid position in all classes, amateur and expert, as well as a wide variety of classes to choose from.
