Cameron Beaubier topped provisional GEICO Motorcycle AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike qualifying Friday at Barber Motorsports Park with a new lap record. Riding his Yamaha Extended Service/Monster Energy/Graves Yamaha YZF-R6, Beaubier lapped the 2.38-mile road course in 1:27.609, eclipsing his lap record of 1:27.685, which he set in 2012. Jason DiSalvo, a New York native who now resides in Alabama, was second-fastest with a time 1:28.226 on his Latus Motors Racing Triumph Daytona 675R. Daytona SportBike class rookie James Rispoli ranked third with a lap of 1:28.589 on his National Guard/Celtic Racing Suzuki GSX-R600. Road America Race Two winner Jake Gagne earned the final spot on the provisional front row with a best effort of 1:28.650 on his Red Bull/RoadRace Factory Yamaha YZF-R6. The session was stopped briefly after Elena Myers crashed her Castrol/Apex Manufacturing Triumph Daytona 675R in Turn Eight. Myers was seen walking away from the crash on closed-circuit TV feeds. Bobby Fong was at the bottom of the order in the session. Fong said his brand new D&D Cycles/Castrol Triumph Daytona 675R was experiencing some technical issues. Final Daytona SportBike qualifying is scheduled to begin at 8:50 a.m. local time Saturday. After provisional qualifying, Cameron said, “There’s something pretty special about this track. It really suits me, and every time I go out on it, I enjoy it more and more. I’m feeling really good about my Y.E.S./Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha R6, and I have a lot of confidence going into tomorrow.” “We’re still working on the bike a little bit,” Garrett said. “It’s not exactly where I want it yet. I went out on track early after the red flag, to try to get some clean laps, but my rear tire was pretty used up by then. I think tomorrow will be better for me, with cooler temperatures in the morning. I’m looking forward to it.” Final qualifying for Daytona SportBike is scheduled for tomorrow at 8:50 AM CST, and DSB Race 1 will go green later tomorrow at 1:00 PM CST. More, from a press release issued by GEICO Motorcycle Road Racing: GEICO’s Westby lays solid foundation during qualifying at Barber BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (June 21) – GEICO Motorcycle Honda rider Dane Westby came away from Friday’s first qualifying session in the sixth position and with a list of tweaks for the team to make before the field is set for the first GoPro Daytona SportBike race during the Triumph SuperBike Classic at Barber Motorsports Park. “Everything has improved since the last time we raced,” Westby said. “I feel tenfold better, but we’ve still got a little work to do on what is essentially a new bike.” Rider and team are going to do their homework overnight to get their bike more finely tuned for Saturday’s GEICO Motorcycle AMA Pro Road Racing Series event. “We’re going to go back through our notes from previous years and look at our settings,” Westby said. “We’re going to see if we can make them match a little bit more. I feel like we’ve got the speed; now we just have to dial in the bike. “I felt a little weird in the first session of the day. I feel like I’m back in the groove now.” Westby’s best lap was in 1 minute, 29.069 seconds. Cameron Beaubier set the pace with a 1:27.609. Westby said his bike behaves a little differently in the corners than some of the other motorcycles, which calls for its own adjustments. “The goal for tonight is trying to find some more exit speed,” Westby said. “Our bike rolls through the corners and doesn’t make the kind of stops and starts that other bikes make in the same places on the track. Westby added that the situation becomes challenging when he’s trying to maintain rhythm and momentum without running into the riders who are quickly slowing in front of him. “If they’re in front of us, we’re going to have to do something about it,” Westby said. “I have to take some creative lines around these guys to set them up to pass. They say I’m pretty good on the brakes, which is important here. I’ve got to be able to create some room to go on by if somebody does something I’m not expecting.” Westby and the GEICO Motorcycle team get another shot to improve their qualifying position at 8:50 a.m. CDT on Saturday morning. The race lines up at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network.
