STAR RIVER?WINDSOR ARCH 60TH MACAU GRAND PRIX PRESS CONFERENCE Statement by Engineer João Manuel Costa Antunes Coordinator Macau Grand Prix Committee
Friends from the media industry, Macau Grand Prix Committee colleagues, ladies and gentlemen, good afternoon and welcome to today’s press conference.
First run in 1954, the Macau Grand Prix this year celebrates its 60th edition.
The Macau Grand Prix Committee has taken the occasion of the 60th anniversary to endeavor to increase the involvement of the community in the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, and to create a year-long promotion.
The Committee has undertaken a publicity campaign to achieve this, organizing cultural and creative events and competitions to raise awareness and encourage members of the public, private enterprises, public institutions and visitors to participate. Our aim is to create an inclusive festive atmosphere throughout Macau. As preparations for the 60th Macau Grand Prix have progressed, as you are aware we have provided updates on the schedule and other news in April and in June. Now the October day we have been looking forward to all year has arrived, when we can announce the drivers and riders who will be participating in the event this year.
The Star River?Windsor Arch 60th Macau Grand Prix will be held over two weekends in November – on November 9th and 10th, and from the 14th to the 17th.
I am pleased to announce that this year we have 350 competitors from 38 countries and territories. The two weekends and additional races see an increase in the number of competitors of almost 50% over last year’s figure of 221. This means we can look forward to welcoming even more team personnel, their sponsors, media and spectators.
I will introduce the entries for three headline races on the second weekend, November 14th to 17th, each supported by this year’s title sponsor, Star River?Windsor Arch.
Star River?Windsor Arch Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix
The top drivers from the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, British Formula 3 International Series, and All-Japan F3 Championship will all compete for the prestigious FIA F3 Intercontinental Cup at Macau next month.
Following its success last year with the first Portuguese winner of the race, António Félix da Costa, Carlin is back to defend its crown with a strong six-car entry. Newly crowned British F3 Champion Jordan King will make his Macau debut with the team, along with Briton Harry Tincknell of Britain, GP3 driver Carlos Sainz Junior, son of former FIA World Rally Champion Carlos, Formula Renault 3.5 Series driver Jazeman Jaafar of Malaysia, and Daniil Kvyat of Russia who is currently 2nd in the GP3 Series.
The two main rivals for the FIA F3 European Championship are both entered for Macau: Ferrari Driver Academy protégé Raffaele Marciello and last year’s runner-up here Felix Rosenqvist. Alex Lynn, fastest in qualifying in 2012, returns this year as does Lucas Auer, nephew of FIA Single Seater Commission President and former Macau competitor Gerhard Berger.
From the All-Japan F3 Championship comes newly-crowned champion Yuichi Nakayama. Racing with TOM’S, a team which has run more Macau winners than any other, Nakayama has had an incredible season so far taking 11 victories in 13 races. He is joined by Katsumasa Chiyo, a newcomer to Macau with B-Max Engineering.
As motorsport continues to develop across the region, Chinese driver Sun Zheng will contest the most prestigious race of his career to date in Macau next month. At 21-years-of-age, Sun made his F3 debut this year winning the British F3 National Class championship.
The field is made up of returning drivers on the brink of stardom, all of whom want more than anything to add a win here to their CVs, and hopeful newcomers keen to discover what makes the Guia Circuit so respected and adored. We are delighted to have such a star-studded entry for our Diamond Jubilee celebration.
FIA World Touring Car Championship – Guia Race of Macau – Presented by Star River?Windsor Arch
Since 2005, the season finale of the FIA World Touring Car Championship has been entertaining fans with its thunderous racing action, and this year will be no exception.
The fact that the 2013 championship has already been decided, with Yvan Muller taking an unprecedented fourth title, will only add to the intensity of the competition as every driver will be focusing on victory alone.
Muller is one of three FIA WTCC champions, with six titles between them, who will arrive here next month. The two races will be emotional ones for Muller as they will be his last with Chevrolet, but he will need to be at his best to beat Briton Rob Huff who memorably took his maiden FIA WTCC championship title here in Macau last year. He holds the record of the most FIA WTCC race wins at Macau, an impressive five.
Gabriele Tarquini is the third former champion. Crowned in 2009, the Italian has never finished outside the top five since, and is one of five drivers in contention for the runner-up position this year.
Hong Kong’s Darryl O’Young and Charles Ng Ka Ki have flown the flag for Asian drivers all season, and for Macau they will be joined by a number of entrants, including nine local drivers, all fighting for the new Eurosport Asia Trophy.
Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix winner in 2000, André Couto joins Campos Racing and will drive a SEAT León WTCC, while China Dragon Racing will run Filipe Clemente de Souza, Ng Kin Veng, Lam Kam San and Célio Alves Dias. Joseph Rosa-Merszei and Henry Ho Wai Kun will race with Liqui Moly Team Engstler. Mak Ka Lok is entered by RPM Racing, and Jerónimo Badaraco is with Son Veng Racing.
Star River?Windsor Arch Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix – 47th Edition
For the 47th edition of what has become one of the most respected and celebrated motorcycle road races in the world we are delighted to announce a field of riders from 11 nations and territories from right across the globe.
The entry list represents the fascinating combination of nine exciting newcomers and many returning heroes, such as eight-time winner and the undisputed two-wheel king of the Guia Circuit, Michael Rutter.
Although Rutter will be on the hunt for win number nine he will face strong challenges from the talented field. Long-time rival and Isle of Man TT star John McGuinness, and runner up at Macau for the last two years Martin Jessopp, are both expected to be on the pace. But so will a host of riders who have shown enormous potential this season: Road racing regulars Gary Johnson and Stephen Thompson, Americans Mark Miller and Jeremy Toye, and familiar names such as Horst Saiger of Austria and Didier Grams.
Riders making their Guia Circuit debuts this year are Britons Dean Harrison, Dan Cooper and Graham English, Swiss riders Roman Stamm and Hervé Gantner, Irishman Brian McCormack, South African Allann-Jon Venter, and André Pires who joins Nuno Caetano as the second entry from Portugal.
Ian Lougher will make his last-ever racing appearance, choosing Macau to bring the curtain down on a long and illustrious career.
Promotions and Preparation The Committee is grateful to the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) which this year carried out a number of promotional activities to help spread the word about the 60th anniversary, including many via its global network of offices. Last month, promotional roadshows were held at tourism events in Japan and Hong Kong.
MGTO has also implemented other promotional activities, and I hope you have all seen the frequent broadcasts of the TV commercial now running on CNN, the BBC, EUROSPORT, CNBC, and on Macau, Hong Kong and Mainland China TV stations.
This year’s Macau Grand Prix Supporting Carrier is Air Macau Company Limited is promoting special Grand Prix holidays. In addition, it is promoting the event through its entire network of offices. Meanwhile, the ocean vessels of our promotion partner Shun Tak China Travel Ship Management Limited will carry promotional stickers.
This month promotional efforts focus on Hong Kong and Macau. In Hong Kong, we will participate in the Hong Kong Classic Car Club’s Classic Car and Motorcycle Shows in Chater Road on October 13th and 27th respectively.
In Macau, all major hotels have been provided with promotional Grand Prix materials so that guests are informed of the activities for the 60th anniversary and also learn about the event’s development over the last six decades.
The Committee is working very closely with schools and universities across Macau for an exhibition detailing both the history and the organisation of the Macau Grand Prix. Visits to the Grand Prix during practice days are also ways to promote the event on site to students.
I believe that through these promotional activities we will attract even more visitors to watch the event.
In Macau we are now seeing buses and taxis bearing Grand Prix advertising, while in order to create an atmosphere of celebration across the city, a number of civic associations are implementing Grand Prix activities, including the Macao Federation of Trade Unions, the Macao Youth Federation, the Industry and Commerce Association of Macau Northern District, The Industry and Commerce Federation of Islands of Macao, the General Union of Neighbours Association of Macau and The Women’s General Association of Macau. These and other activities will ensure the whole community can enjoy the Diamond Jubilee.
November will see the start of the Macau Food Festival, while fireworks displays on the 10th, 13th and 17th will add to the festivities. During the Grand Prix, TDM will broadcast live and also beam the satellite feed around the world, including to Europe, the Americas and across the Asia-Pacific region.
All preparation work is complete. In terms of personnel training, after months of instruction the AAMC has the track and race officials prepared. Just this past weekend, three FIA medical officers were in Macau to test the doctors and rescue personnel. Not only were the results excellent but the exercise also reaffirmed the professionalism and capabilities of Macau’s medical rescue team.
Infrastructure
With regard to Grand Prix infrastructure, Lisboa Stand and the Grand Stand are currently being assembled and the Armco barrier installation will intensify. For road resurfacing, we will closely cooperate with the transport sector and will consider all suggestions in order to minimize the impact on the public. This year will install 120 pairs of barrier gates, 10 more than last year, mainly at the Hospital Conde S. Januário’s new emergency building and at residential parking exits, while at exits from the road junctions we will expand the width of the gates to accommodate large vehicles.
Construction of the new Race Control Tower is nearing completion, and the new facility will provide greater space for race personnel, commentators and technical staff, ensuring the Grand Prix has the infrastructure to meet a new era.
