AMA Pro racers Joey Pascarella and Jake Zemke kicked off their 2013 seasons by winning multiple races at a WERA West Sportsman Series event Sunday at Auto Club Speedway, in Fontana, California.

Pascarella rode his Pirelli-shod, Riders Discount-sponsored Yamaha YZF-R6 to convincing victories in B Superstock, B Superbike, C Superstock and C Superbike on the 2.3-mile infield road course.

“I’m just getting ready for the AMA season, pretty much,” Pascarella told Roadracingworld.com. “I came here to go faster and win races, and I did.”

Zemke piloted a Pirelli-equipped, Jett Tuning-backed Honda CBR1000RR to three race wins: Formula One, A Superstock and A Superbike.

“We’re just out here to have some fun,” said Zemke, who smoked his rear tire out of some corners during his races. “We’re here to make the bike the best we can, but in the races I’m riding for pure enjoyment. I got to burn the tire up a little. I haven’t got to do that for a while. Last year I was riding a little bike [a Ducati 848EVO AMA Pro Daytona SportBike]. This bike is [close to] stock. It’s never had the head off. And it doesn’t have any electronics, but with the way it makes power it doesn’t need any. It’s fun. But even with all of this fun, I want to go AMA racing.”

Pascarella and Zemke, both Daytona 200 winners, said they had no firm plans to go racing in the 2013 GEICO Motorcycle AMA Pro Road Racing Series. Pascarella said he was working to put together a program for himself, but Zemke said, “I have none [plans]. At this point, I have no offers to go do anything, and it’s getting close to Daytona. I’d love to have an offer. I’m staying optimistic. I’m keeping up with my training and my riding, like this, to keep me sharp. I’m hoping something comes through at the last minute.”

Another multi-race winner at the event was 14-year-old Anthony Alonso, who will race in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup in 2013. Alonso used his Roadracingworld.com-supported Moriwaki MD250H to take first-place finishes in D Superbike and Formula Two. Alonso also led much of the Formula Three race, but Jayson Uribe passed Alonso in the run to the finish line to win by 0.028 second. Alonso finished second in Formula Three.

The event attracted 124 riders who signed up for 334 race entries. That’s the same number of riders and five more entries compared with the same event in 2012 and a success, according to WERA Motorcycle Racing President Evelyne Clarke. Clarke said she expected a lighter turnout due to a wintery weather forecast for the area.

The event started off cold — 32° F at the 8:00 a.m. start of practice but temperatures rose to the mid-50s with sunny skies and little wind.
