According to local news reports, the State of Montana is investigating Dal Smilie, the Montana government lawyer who resigned last fall from the AMA Board of Directors after the non-profit organization found that he had been reimbursed for falsified expense reports. Smilie, an elected member of the AMA Board for 25 years, was Chairman when questions arose over his expense accounts. Smilie immediately resigned from the AMA Board, and AMA President Rob Dingman hired a forensic accounting firm that specializes in fraud to review Smilie’s expense accounts. The results of a three-month investigation by forensic accountants were presented to the AMA Board Friday, and the Board directed AMA staffers to deliver the findings to law enforcement authorities. Besides possible criminal prosecution and civil action, Smilie also could face tax problems and lose his license to practice law.
