Burleson Take Formula 1 Win at Texas World with CMRA

Cory Burleson battled gusty winds and tough competition, riding his Dunlop-shod, MotoBros-backed, Yamaha YZF-R6 to two wins during the Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association’s (CMRA) fifth round of Bridgestone/CMRA Championship sprints this past Sunday, June 18, on the 15-turn, 2.9 mile counter-clockwise course at Texas World Speedway, College Station, Texas.

Cloudy skies cleared by mid-morning, temperatures in the high 80’s climbing to the mid 90’s and a steady breeze made for some physically demanding conditions, but lap times were fast as the 23-race schedule got underway.

Burleson got down to business, taking the wins in P1 Racing/Metric Garage / CVC – Formula 1 Expert and MotorSport Ranch – B Superstock Expert.

Young Cooper McDonald was the winner of the first Century Trucks and Vans Formula 2 Expert Shootout, taking home the $750 purse and turning a fastest lap of 1:50.456 on Lap 4 with his Yamaha FZ-07R. McDonald also took the win in Rookie Expert LW, and second in Heavyweight Twins Expert for three podiums total.

Morning qualifying for Sunday’s headline race, P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert saw lap times in the high teens with the potential for some fierce battles. Doug Frenchak took pole position, with Burleson and Nick Doolan, both on Yamaha YZF-R6 ‘s, rounding out the front row.

As the 19-bike grid lined up, the cloud cover kept the conditions good for the racers. The start lights went out, and the tension mounted as Burleson, Doolan, and Frenchak shot forward contesting for the lead. Frenchak, riding a Yamaha YZF-R1, got out in front, with Burleson on his tail and Doolan in tow. Yamaha YZF-R6 mounted Garet Tomlinson was going at it with Joseph Caruso aboard a BMW S1000RR. Jordan Pence, also on a Yamaha YZF-R6, held off Yamaha YZF-R1 mounted Steven Nedd to round out the top six.

Frenchak held the lead, putting down the fastest lap of the weekend with a 1:45.198 on Lap 2, but couldn’t quite shake Burleson who answered with a 1:45.263, and Doolan chimed in with a 1:45.346. Frenchak went to work, and the leaders’ furious pursuit on each other started opening a gap on the rest of the field. The rest of the pack followed suit, with the fastest lap times only differing by .05 -.08 of a second between the top riders.

The race stretched on, and with two laps left, Burleson put a move on Frenchak, taking over the lead. Frenchak then tucked the front, leaving second wide open for Doolan, with Caruso breaking away from Tomlinson to grab third. Burleson put his head down, crossing the line with a 7 second lead over second place. Doolan crossed next, followed by Caruso, Tomlinson, and Pence. Steven Nedd crossed sixth, with Eric Monus, Jack Vigneau, Ben Jones, and Kyle Fox rounding out the top ten. Burleson also grabbed the P1 Racing purse for being the first 600 across the line.

Top Novice went to Scott McDaniel, who took four wins with his Suzuki SV650, in Formula 2 Novice, Monkey Moto NTXSBKS – D Superbike Novice, Lightweight Twins Novice, and Formula 40 LW.

The Jennifer Millsap “Get it Girl” $100 award, sponsored by A. C. Horn, went to Brandie Cox for her combined finishes aboardher Yamaha YZF-R6 in RaceworX – A Superstock Expert, MotorSport Ranch – B Superstock Expert, South Central Race Center – C Superstock Expert, and C Superbike Expert.
