Cleland Wins Formula 1 Expert at MotorSport Ranch With CMRA

Brandon Cleland put on an epic show as he rode his RES RaceworX Yamaha YZF-R6 to the win in Formula 1 Expert during the Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association’s (CMRA) third round of Bridgestone/CMRA Championship sprints this past Sunday, July 23, on the 11-turn, 1.7 mile clockwise course at MotorSport Ranch, Cresson, Texas.

Cloudy skies gave way to sunshine, temperatures in the high 90’s to low 100’s and a strong hot wind that made for fast track conditions, but grueling riding.

Cleland got down to business, taking the wins in P1 Racing/Metric Garage / CVC – Formula 1 Expert, and South Central Race Center C Superstock Expert with a fastest lap of 1:15.845, the fastest lap of the entire weekend, on Lap 7 of Race 10 – Formula 1 Expert.

Daniel Adams was out front for the Lightweights, coming back from a couple of tip overs to take the wins in Century Trucks and Vans – Formula 2 Expert, D Superbike Expert, and Lightweight Twins Expert, with his Suzuki SV650, running a fastest lap of 1:19.718 on Lap 5 of Race 9, Formula 2 Expert.

The standout for the Heavyweights was Doug Frenchak, taking the wins in RaceworX – A Superstock Expert and 212Decals.com on his Yamaha YZF-R1 and turning a fastest lap of 1:16.411 on lap 5 of Race 18, the A Superbike race.

Morning qualifying for Sunday’s headline race, P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert was cancelled due to a sudden rain shower that lasted for 20 minutes and soaked the track, so the race was gridded by points.

As the 22 bike grid lined up with points, Cleland was on the back row, along with Cory Burleson on his Yamaha YZF-R6 and Chris Fillmore aboard his KTM 1290 Super Duke. The start lights went out, and the tension mounted as the grid shot forward and the back row launched. As the field spread out, Burleson churned through the ranks with Cleland and Fillmore chasing him down. By lap 3, all three were out in front and shaking the rest of the pack off. As Burleson stretched out his lead, Cleland stalked him with Fillmore gunning for both of them. As the race wound down, Burleson and Cleland had gotten over 7 seconds a head of the rest of the field, with Burleson still holding Cleland off. Then with the last turns coming up, Cleland made has move and put a pass on Burleson. As they went side by side through the wagon wheel turn, Burleson’s rear tire started stepping out and he lost some ground. Cleland pushed ahead and took the checkers a mere 0.990 seconds ahead of Burleson, with Fillmore finishing third. Braeden Ortt crossed next on a Yamaha YZF-R6, as Joseph Caruso Brought home fifth with his BMW S1000RR. Jordan Pence and Kyle Fox brought their Yamaha YZF-R6’s home next, followed by Steven Nedd astride a Yamaha YZF-R1 in eighth, Jack Vigneau, also on a Yamaha YZF-R1 in ninth, and Aaron Graham rounded out the top ten with his Yamaha YZF-R6.

Cleland also grabbed the P1 Racing purse for being the first 600 across the line.

Top Novice went to Isaac Bauman, who took four wins with his Suzuki SV650 in Formula 2 Novice, Lightweight Twins Novice, Monkey Moto NTXSBKS – D Superbike Novice, and D Superstock Novice turning a fastest lap of 1:24.248 on Lap 4 of Race 17, Lightweight Twins Novice.
