Updated With Statement From Racetrack: Rider Hits Cornerworker On Track, Both Killed At Barber Motorsports Park

A rider participating in a practice day today at Barber Motorsports Park collided with a cornerworker on the track, and both the rider and the cornerworker were killed. The incident happened at approximately 10:15 a.m. local time this morning during a practice day leading up to this weekend’s WERA Sportsman event at the track. The names of the victims have not been released, but according to Birmingham Fire Department Battalion Chief C.W. Mardis, a male cornerworker went onto the track to remove some debris, possibly a dead bird, when he was struck and killed by a 33-year-old female rider at speed on the track. Both were pronounced dead at the scene due to massive head trauma and internal injuries, according to Mardis. An official representing the Barber Motorsports Park confirmed today that an incident occurred on track during a private motorcycle event resulting in the death of two individuals. The two fatalities were a motorcycle rider and an on-track worker; neither of which were employees of Barber Motorsports Park as previously reported.
