Riding the 2018 Kawasaki Ninja 400 at Sonoma

Even after two decades of racing as a professional in the AMA National Series, Roadracing World's Chris Ulrich was impressed with how well the stock 2018 Kawasaki Ninja 400 works on the racetrack. It may be a MotoAmerica Junior Cup overdog! Photo by Kevin Wing.

“My lack of recent small-bike experience at Sonoma meant it took me a couple of laps to adapt my style to the Ninja 400. The biggest challenge I faced was talking myself into running past every brake marker I’ve ever used while tucked in on the gas. Take Turn Six, for example. On a Superbike I’m usually off the gas and on the brakes well before the crest of the hill on the entry. By contrast, I was flat-out in fifth gear coming up over the rise on the Ninja 400. What a difference subtracting 120 horsepower makes!

“Once up to speed, I found the Ninja 400 to be a really capable bike…”

-Chris Ulrich, Racing Editor, in the April 2018 Issue of Roadracing World
