Pretty Hate Machine, Team Thornton/Young Win CMRA Endurance Races At MSR Houston

The Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association (CMRA) held its first round of Team 60, Ultra-Lightweight Endurance, and Lightweight Sprint grids this past Saturday, February 20, bringing over 9 hours of racing action to the road course at MSR Houston, in Angleton, Texas. Temperatures in the mid-70s F, partially cloudy weather with a light breeze made for great racing conditions.

The Lightweight Sprint grids with large grids of 20 entries each, ran on the 2.4-mile full course and were a great warm up for the endurance races. The 500 Superbike/Ultra Lightweight GP Expert/ Ultra Lightweight GP Novice race had an awesome showing of 34 bikes, and 500 Superstock/E Superbike Expert/ E Superbike Novice had 31.

The 6-Hour Ultra-Lightweight Endurance, which ran on the 2.4-mile full course, had a whopping combined grid of 46 teams, with the endurance classes of 500 Classic, 500 Superstock, Ultra Lightweight GP, E Superstock, and Formula 4 Endurance represented. The start lights went out and Ultra Lightweight Endurance Champion team Pretty Hate Machine of Jesse Davis, Will Gruy, Alan Phillips, and David Tiede immediately began their title defense aboard their Honda RVF400 with the Aprilia RS250 mounted Forza Four81 and Honda CBR500R-mounted Unobtanium Racing teams in hot pursuit. A red flag was brought out on lap 2 due to a bike down in the middle of the track which caused a full course restart.

On the restart, the leaders were back out in front, joined by the MiniMotion team of Chris Headley, Jeff Hughes, Ryan Max Johnson, and John Orchard on a Honda CBR500R, Team Von Hertell/Harris Hill, and Lawpup Racing also on Honda CBR500Rs rounded out the top six. The racing stayed aggressive, as the front runners went at like a pack of fighting squirrels. Forza Four81 took over the lead going into hour two, with MiniMotion and Unobtanium closing up a one lap deficit on Pretty hate Machine. Headed into the third hour, Unobtanium caught Pretty Hate Machine, took over the lead and held it for the next three hours. Pretty Hate Machine held onto to second, and solidly held off MiniMotion, while Deserts Brats and the Lawpup Racing team of Danny Dominguez, Eric Falt, Britten Geary, and Jordan Pence wrestled each other, and MOTOMEX RACING pulled up into the top five.

Going into the final hour, Pretty Hate Machine took the lead back from Unobtanium Racing, and held it, stretching their lead to 11 seconds, while MiniMotion slipped around the Unobtanium Racing team of Bryan Evans, John Redford, Tim Rose, and Eddie Thornton for second. A coolant spill in The Keyhole brought three bikes down and a red flag out with two minutes left in the race. The race was called, giving Pretty Hate Machine the overall and 500 Classic win, with MiniMotion taking second overall and first in 500 Superstock. Unobtanium Racing took third overall and second in 500 Superstock, while the Desert Brats team of Zachary Boldwyn, Brad Thomas, Derek Thomas, and Greg Wanless finished fourth overall and third in 500 Superstock. The MOTOMEX RACING team of Daniel Carrera, Gabriel Martinez-Abrego, Javier Martinez-Abrego III, and Enrique Muniz took fifth overall and first in Ultra Lightweight GP, and Lawpup Racing finished sixth overall and fourth in 500 Superstock.

The final race of the day was the Dunlop/Race Tire Service Team 60 race at 5:25 pm, and the popular LeMans-style start was not used to start the 21 team grid this time due to the narrowness of the front straight.

Brandon Young, riding on the team Thornton/Young, leapt out to the early lead on his Suzuki GSX-R1000, with Craig Montgomery of the Burleson/Montgomery team giving chase on his ZX-10R. The other teams in the mix at the front were Davies/Frenchak and Doolan/Galindo on Yamaha YZF-R6s, Martins/Wrobel on Suzuki GSXR-1000s, and Adams/Adams onboard Suzuki SV650s. The partial cloudy conditions gave way to sundown at the handoff point, making visibility a little tough after the rider switches. Eddie Thornton took over the lead on his Yamaha YZF-R1M, and turned the fastest lap of the race on lap 20, running a 1:35.668. Lap times stayed fast, despite diminishing daylight, and the checkered flag was thrown five minutes early due to loss of light. Team Thornton/Young stayed strong, taking the overall and Heavyweight win, Burleson/Montgomery finished second overall and in Heavyweight. Davies/Frenchak finished third overall and first in Middleweight, Martins/Wrobel finished fourth overall and third in Heavyweight. Doolan/Galindo held onto fifth overall and second in Middleweight, and Adams/Adams finished sixth overall and first in Lightweight.
