MAPFRE ASPAR TEAM AGREE NEW TWO-YEAR DEAL WITH NICO TEROL
Reward for Spanish rider's rapid adaptation to Moto2 and mutual esteem between the two parties
MAPFRE Aspar Team and Nico Terol have reached an agreement to continue their collaboration for another two seasons. Negotiations reached a swift conclusion, allowing the rider and the team to turn their focus back to the remaining five races of the current season. Having signed for the team in 2010 Nico finished runner-up in the 125cc class in his first season before becoming the last ever two-stroke World Champion the following year. The Spaniard then made the step up to the intermediate Moto2 category with the MAPFRE Aspar Team in 2012.
The season started out steadily as the rider and team followed a careful plan of adaptation but slowly the results have started to come and Terol continues to close the gap to the front. The team is aware of the rider's potential and his ability to be a Moto2 frontrunner in 2013, just as he did during his time in 125.
Jorge MartÃnez 'Aspar': "I am really happy to announce that we will continue to work with Nico Terol for the next two years. It shows our commitment to a rider that came through the 'Cuna de Campeones' project. Last year he won the 125cc title with the MAPFRE Aspar Team having finished runner-up the season before. This season in Moto2 he has taken a major step forward, especially in the last few races, although I hope he can continue to improve over the final five races. We have total confidence in him and we knew he would need time to adapt to Moto2 but we are backing him because we are convinced that he will be fighting at the front in every race next season."
Nico Terol: "I am delighted to have the support of my second family, the MAPFRE Aspar Team, for next season. This year has been a little more tricky than we'd hoped but it has been a learning process in Moto2 and we are getting ready for next season. To have my situation sorted now and to know I will be with the same team is an extra motivation for me to give my best in the final few races of the current championship. I'm really happy that I'll have the same group of engineers because we understand each other perfectly. In 125 we made history together and I am sure that in Moto2 next season we can be fighting at the front. I want to thank Jorge for trusting in me and for the effort he made to keep me with his team and to provide me with the best material."
