ASMA Round 2 and the Southern round of the North South Challenge had a good turnout and great racing on a rare non windy day April 15 at Arroyo Seco Raceway.

In the first race of the day, the Kurveygirl.com Unlimited Superbike race, Dan Dickerman got the first holeshot of the day over Joe Chasser and Mikey Shreve and immediately opened up a two-second gap by the time the racers were headed towards the Yucca Turn. Shreve overtook Chasser and set after Dickerman, who was chasing his first Expert open class win. The top three stayed the same for the remainder of the race and Dickerman got his first open class win over Shreve with Chasser rounding out the podium.

Pirelli-sponsored Shreve continued where he left off in March and took a commanding win in the Evan Steel Performance Formula Arroyo race, getting out front early and establishing a four-second lead before another three-time #1 plate holder, David Hurtado of Phoenix, Arizona made his way into second place on lap five, passing Dickerman on the brakes into turn 3 at the end of the long straight and going by Chasser into Yucca. From lap five to lap 12 both Shreve and Dunlop-sponsored Hurtado lapped in the low 1:08 range, pulling away from Chasser a few tenths each lap. Shreve controlled the race from the front and crossed the line with two seconds over Hurtado and increased his points lead to five over Chasser with two rounds completed.

Mickey Rupe dominated the JR Cochran Service Ultralight Grand Prix, Lightweight Grand Prix, Formula 500, Fast by Few Southwest Thunder and 500 Cup classes. The 65-year-old veteran racer was untouchable in every race he entered on his Yamaha R3, leading every lap of every race he entered over other multi-podium finishers Phil Allison, Nic Swensgard and Art Johnson.

ASMA road racing will return on May 5-6 at Arroyo Seco Raceway and the North South Challenge will visit Sandia Speedway with host SMRI on July 21-22.
