Thirty years ago, the Kawasaki 600 Ninja literally invented the 600cc supersport segment, which today remains one of the benchmark performance classes in the world. Now for 2015, Kawasaki celebrates three decades of racing wins and championships with a very special 30th Anniversary Ninja® ZX™-6R, the ultimate expression of the Ninja’s “Forever Fearless” attitude in the middleweight sportbike class. Building on the current ZX-6R platform, the 2015 edition features exclusive styling touches that uniquely identify it as the powerful descendent of the motorcycle that truly started it all.

Long-Stroke 636cc Engine

The 2015 Ninja ZX-6R story begins with the ultimate advantage over its 600-class competition – displacement. Offering 636cc vs. the 599cc of competing inline-four machines, the ZX-6R gives riders a significant 37cc increase in engine size resulting in much stronger low- and mid-range power, a premium asset for street riding, canyon carving and on-track authority. This performance advantage has been fully proven in the demanding arena of AMA Pro Road Racing, when the first revolutionary 636 blew away the competition’s 600s and won races against factory 750s on the track.

This category-shattering heritage, passed faithfully down through the ZX-6R’s most essential DNA, still resides in the latest model’s 16-valve, long-stroke DOHC 636cc inline-four. This engine provides the exact riding experience demanded by the most discerning middleweight sportbike pilots. Torque rich and rev happy, the supremely powerful engine easily makes the transition from everyday city streets to the wide-open racetrack, making its broad spectrum of performance available to every rider. In fact, the ZX-6R powerplant is as happy breezing through the morning commute as it is tagging the rev limiter on the back straight, proving that the power capable of dominating on the track can also be smooth enough for everyday use.

The key to this immense bandwidth is the ZX-6R’s unique long-stroke engine design. Its additional 37cc of displacement compared to competing inline-fours makes a significant impact on real-world riding. Increased performance throughout the rpm range is always welcome for vigorous sport riding or racing, but it also significantly enhances everyday usability. Thanks to the ZX-6R engine’s larger displacement, low- through mid- range torque is significantly stronger and the engine’s total “area under the power curve” grows substantially when compared to traditional 600cc bikes.

Intake and exhaust port shapes are optimized to suit the displacement, helping to provide increased performance as well as improved throttle response. In particular, the intake ports are wider near the throttle bodies and split farther upstream from the valves, while the exhaust ports are wider near the valves and taper on their way to the exhaust header. The camshafts are made of lightweight chromoly steel, with greater intake duration and more intake and exhaust lift to complement the extra engine displacement. Meticulously finished piston crowns increase piston strength and accommodate the extra valve lift, while a molybdenum coating on the piston skirts fights friction and helps with engine break-in. Finally, the connecting rods are built to suit the kinetic energy of the long-stroke engine, and high-rigidity piston pins help ensure high-rpm durability. 


The airbox has a large internal volume tuned to help the engine produce maximum power with smooth delivery. Inside are four single-bore intake funnels that contribute to low- and mid-range torque production, with different inner and outer funnel pairs that further enhance engine character. The Digital Fuel Injection (DFI®) system’s ultra-fine atomizing injectors deliver a sub-60 micron fuel droplet size for optimum air-fuel mixing and maximum combustion efficiency, while precise DFI mapping enhances throttle response and reduces emissions.

The end result is a 636cc engine that delivers class-leading drive out of corners, offers superior flexibility and precise throttle control. These virtues pay big dividends when making mid-corner power adjustments or stringing a set of curves together on a racetrack or twisting backroad.

F.C.C. Clutch & Cassette Gearbox

The ZX-6R’s heroic power is delivered through a high-tech F.C.C. clutch with assist and slipper functions. This advanced clutch design allows quick, effortless downshifts when scrubbing-off speed for a corner, while also helping minimize rear-wheel hop caused by excess back-torque. The design uses two types of cams, including an assist cam and a slipper cam, that were developed based on racetrack testing and expert rider feedback. The “assist” cam acts like a servo mechanism to pull the clutch hub and operating plate together, and compress the clutch plates under load. This allows the total clutch spring count and tension to be reduced, resulting in up to a 25% overall reduction in effort at the clutch lever. The assist cam also increases the clutch’s maximum torque capacity to help it cope with the 636cc engine’s extra power without adding to the overall component mass. Whenever back-torque is present, such as during rapid braking and downshifting, the clutch’s “slipper” cam reduces clamping force on the hub and operating plate to help prevent rear-wheel hop and allow for smooth corner entry. The spring plate assembly likewise offers smooth engagement and helps minimize vibration and clutch judder.

In keeping with its racing DNA, the ZX-6R also employs a cassette-type six-speed transmission to simplify gearing changes at the track, help reduce the time needed for bike setup and allow more time for riding. Strong alloys and idealized gear thickness provide optimum gearbox durability, making it the perfect match for the torquey 636cc engine.

Track-Ready Electronics

The Ninja ZX-6R features the most up-to-date sportbike and racetrack technology offered by Kawasaki. Its three-mode Kawasaki Traction Control (KTRC) system is similar to the KTRC unit found on the flagship Ninja ZX-14R, and features even more advanced programming than the S-KTRC system used on the ZX-10R superbike. And its selectable power modes offer numerous tuning options and maximum flexibility compared to the middleweight competition.

The KTRC traction control system on the Ninja ZX-6R combines the best elements of the S-KTRC and KTRC traction control systems on Kawasaki’s two flagship sportbikes. Three different KTRC modes are selectable via a switch on the left clip-on. Mode 1 offers maximum racetrack performance, Mode 2 offers sporty street performance, and Mode 3 virtually eliminates wheelspin and improves rider confidence on slippery surfaces. Riders may also turn the system completely off for total manual throttle control.

Just like the S-KTRC system on a ZX-10R superbike, the ZX-6R’s KTRC Mode 1 and Mode 2 prioritize maximum forward acceleration. To do so, sophisticated computer algorithms predict when available traction is about to be compromised, and then initiate KTRC intervention before slippage exceeds the optimum acceleration range. This minimizes how much power must be reduced to improve or restore rear-wheel traction, while also helping to provide maximum forward drive. Operating parameters are monitored and confirmed 200 times per second, with the system using only ignition timing to regulate the engine’s power output, allowing extremely quick response. KTRC Mode 3 features similar tuning to a Concours® 14 ABS sport tourer’s traction control system. During normal operation, Mode 3 uses the same logic and control method as Mode 1 and Mode 2, but immediately switches to three-way intervention – using ignition timing, fuel delivery and the intake tract’s sub-throttles – if excessive rear-wheel spin is detected. This allows Mode 3 to reduce engine output to a level that will allow the rear wheel to regain grip, even on very slippery surfaces.

The fine control provided by the dual throttle valves also results in a very natural throttle feel and smooth transitions no matter how quickly the rider opens the throttle. This highly effective system uses minimal hardware paired with very advanced software programming that monitors various parameters and rider inputs. The only additional hardware required by the KTRC system is a set of front and rear wheel-speed sensors so it can calculate rear-wheel slippage. In sum, the overall effects of Modes 1, 2 and 3 are easy to distinguish from each other and effectively cover a wide range of riding conditions.

Riders can select either “Full” or “Low” engine power modes via a switch on the left clip-on. The power modes allow quick adjustment the power delivery to help suit road or track conditions, or personal preference. Full mode unleashes the engine’s full performance potential. Low mode offers the same low-rpm power output, but begins to limit power as the rpm rises into the midrange and then offers only 80% of the engine’s maximum power. Low mode also delivers a softer throttle response, a handy feature when the rider wants to relax.

Combining the KTRC and Power Mode options, riders have a total of eight combinations from which to choose, and each system can be independently set to match rider skill/preference, riding location and surface conditions. An experienced rider on dry pavement might choose “Full Power” and “KTRC Mode 1” for a trackday or club race, but in wet and/or slippery conditions, that same rider might choose “Low Power” and “KTRC Mode 3.” As noted above, the various modes are easily selectable from a convenient switch on the left clip-on.

High-Performance Brake System

One-piece Nissin “monobloc” radial-mount brake calipers are highly rigid, offer excellent heat dissipation, and are 45 grams lighter than a comparable two-piece caliper. The monobloc calipers are paired with 310mm petal-type front rotors to help provide superb braking power, with great feel at the lever. Adopted from the ZX-10R superbike, the rear brake caliper helps offer good fade-resistance and optimum rear brake performance in conjunction with a 220mm petal-type rotor. The rear master cylinder reservoir mounts forward of the swingarm pivot to maximize free space around the footpeg. In addition, the rear brake pedal is coaxially mounted with the footpeg for excellent mid-stroke braking efficiency and optimum feel.

Suspension & Chassis

The Showa Separate Function Fork–Big Piston (SFF-BP) combines the innovative concepts of an SFF and a BPF to deliver next-generation suspension performance. The fork utilizes springs on both sides, with adjustable spring preload in the left tube and adjustable Big Piston compression and rebound damping in the right tube. All adjusters are located on the upper fork caps for convenient access. Smooth initial stroke action and excellent composure under braking are decisive BP strengths. True to its “Big Piston” name, the large-diameter damping piston in the right fork leg is much bigger than the dampers used in traditional “cartridge” forks with the same external dimensions. Since oil inside a BP fork leg acts against a much larger surface area, the damping pressure can be reduced without compromising the overall damping effectiveness. Reducing the damping pressure also allows the inner fork tube to move more smoothly, which is especially noticeable during the initial part of the stroke. The result is greater composure as the fork begins to compress, and a less severe change in chassis attitude (reduced dive) during hard braking. The SFF-BP is primarily tuned for use on twisty roads, with the tuning also allowing a high level of performance at the racetrack, and comfortable response in the city and on the highway.

Kawasaki’s patented bottom-link Uni-Trak® rear suspension offers 5.3 inches of travel and features a gas-charged shock with adjustability for spring preload, 25-position rebound damping and stepless compression damping. Linkage and lever ratios deliver impressive ride quality in both city and highway conditions.

Lightweight twin-spar aluminum frame engineering places the engine in the optimum position for superb handling and rider feedback. It features a 23.5-degree rake angle that helps quicken steering response, enhance maneuverability and promote clear communication to the rider from the front tire. It also uses low friction steering-stem seals for more precise steering inputs and lighter handling at low speeds.

Bodywork & Ergonomics

The 2015 ZX-6R bodywork features highly aggressive design elements for a characteristic and unique Ninja appearance. Large fairing openings provide increased airflow and enhanced heat dissipation, while the fairing lowers, rear cowl and assorted blacked-out body panels contribute to the bike’s compact and lightweight appearance. Projector-beam headlights are encased in a sharp-edged housing that features integrated position lamps, and a sleek one-piece front fender adds to the excellent aerodynamics. Semi-flush front turn signals are built into the bodywork, and compact rear turn signals complement the minimalist tail section. The ZX-6R’s compact LED taillight is lightweight, very bright and offers a modern high-tech appearance. And finally, a “hugger” fender above the swingarm helps reduce aerodynamic turbulence and keep the undertail area clean.

A critical feature for sportbikes, the ZX-6R’s seat, footpeg and handlebar relationship places the handlebars close to the rider and at an angle that promotes a highly intuitive and comfortable riding position. The fuel tank is flared around its top edge to provide a large leg and knee contact area, further contributing to the excellent chassis feedback. Together with a narrow lightweight aluminum rear sub-frame, the seat’s leading edge provides a slender and effective high-performance sportbike riding position, as well as a shorter reach to the pavement. This helps the Ninja appeal to an even wider range of riders.

Multi-Function Instrumentation Display

The crisp LCD instrument panel gives at-a-glance information to the rider, including an analog-style tachometer and a multi-function screen to enable the rider to select the combination of information displayed prominently. Primary functions on the LCD panel include KTRC, Power Mode and Economical Riding (ECO) indicators. Additional functions include a digital speedometer, odometer, dual trip meters, clock, instant and average fuel consumption, coolant temperature, as well as a shift indicator, traction control activity level, ABS indicator and low-fuel warning lights. A large gear-position indicator gives instant numerical gear confirmation. The mirror design offers increased rearward visibility without increasing overall vehicle width.

Selectable Power Modes

Three-Mode Kawasaki Traction Control (KTRC)

– The system uses minimal hardware supplemented by advanced software. In addition to the engine’s ECU, the system only requires front and rear wheel speed sensors, meaning minimal additional weight is required for traction control.

F.C.C. Clutch with Assist and Slipper Functions

– F.C.C. clutch with assist & slipper functions uses two types of cams, an assist cam and a slipper cam that were developed based on racetrack testing and rider feedback
– The F.C.C. clutch’s “assist” cam acts like a self-servo mechanism, pulling the clutch hub and operating plate together to compress the clutch plates under load. This allows the total clutch spring count and pressure to be reduced, resulting in up to a 25% reduction in effort at the clutch lever
– The assist cam also increases the torque capacity of the clutch so it can cope with the extra torque produced by the 636cc engine, without gaining any weight

Separate Function Fork – Big Piston: (SFF-BP)

– SFF-BP fork combines the features of Showa’s big piston and separate function forks, featuring springs on both sides, with dedicated preload adjustability in the left tube and dedicated damping pistons and adjustability in the right tube
– Big Piston design provides smooth action during the initial part of the stroke and contributes to excellent feel during heavy braking. The large-diameter damper piston is much bigger than those used in traditional “cartridge” forks
– Big Piston design allows the fork oil to act on a much larger surface area, so the damping pressure can be reduced without compromising effectiveness. Reducing the damping pressure allows the slider to react more smoothly, which is especially noticeable during the initial part of the stroke. The result is greater control as the fork begins to compress and very calm response during braking-induced weight-transfer, for greater chassis stability on corner entry
– Fork settings were tuned for maximum effectiveness on twisty roads, allowing a high level of performance for the racetrack, with a comfortable ride in the city and on the highway

Bottom-link Uni-Trak® Rear suspension

Long-Stroke 636cc Engine

The 2015 Ninja ZX-6R story begins with the ultimate advantage over its 600-class competition – displacement. Offering 636cc vs. the 599cc of competing inline-four machines, the ZX-6R gives riders a significant 37cc increase in engine size resulting in much stronger low- and mid-range power, a premium asset for street riding, canyon carving and on-track authority. This performance advantage has been fully proven in the demanding arena of AMA Pro Road Racing, when the first revolutionary 636 blew away the competition’s 600s and won races against factory 750s on the track.

This category-shattering heritage, passed faithfully down through the ZX-6R’s most essential DNA, still resides in the latest model’s 16-valve, long-stroke DOHC 636cc inline-four. This engine provides the exact riding experience demanded by the most discerning middleweight sportbike pilots. Torque rich and rev happy, the supremely powerful engine easily makes the transition from everyday city streets to the wide-open racetrack, making its broad spectrum of performance available to every rider. In fact, the ZX-6R powerplant is as happy breezing through the morning commute as it is tagging the rev limiter on the back straight, proving that the power capable of dominating on the track can also be smooth enough for everyday use.

The key to this immense bandwidth is the ZX-6R’s unique long-stroke engine design. Its additional 37cc of displacement compared to competing inline-fours makes a significant impact on real-world riding. Increased performance throughout the rpm range is always welcome for vigorous sport riding or racing, but it also significantly enhances everyday usability. Thanks to the ZX-6R engine’s larger displacement, low- through mid- range torque is significantly stronger and the engine’s total “area under the power curve” grows substantially when compared to traditional 600cc bikes.


Intake and exhaust port shapes are optimized to suit the displacement, helping to provide increased performance as well as improved throttle response. In particular, the intake ports are wider near the throttle bodies and split farther upstream from the valves, while the exhaust ports are wider near the valves and taper on their way to the exhaust header. The camshafts are made of lightweight chromoly steel, with greater intake duration and more intake and exhaust lift to complement the extra engine displacement. Meticulously finished piston crowns increase piston strength and accommodate the extra valve lift, while a molybdenum coating on the piston skirts fights friction and helps with engine break-in. Finally, the connecting rods are built to suit the kinetic energy of the long-stroke engine, and high-rigidity piston pins help ensure high-rpm durability.

The airbox has a large internal volume tuned to help the engine produce maximum power with a smooth power delivery. Inside are four single-bore intake funnels that contribute to low- and mid-range torque production, with different inner and outer funnel pairs that further enhance engine character. The Digital Fuel Injection (DFI®) system’s ultra-fine atomizing injectors deliver a sub-60 micron fuel droplet size for optimum air-fuel mixing and maximum combustion efficiency, while precise DFI mapping enhances throttle response and reduces emissions.

The end result is a 636cc engine that delivers class-leading drive out of corners, offers superior flexibility and precise throttle control. These virtues pay big dividends when making mid-corner power adjustments or stringing a set of curves together on a racetrack or twisting backroad.
F.C.C. Clutch & Cassette Gearbox

The ZX-6R’s heroic power is delivered through a high-tech F.C.C. clutch with assist and slipper functions. This advanced clutch design allows quick, effortless downshifts when scrubbing-off speed for a corner, while also helping minimize rear-wheel hop caused by excess back-torque. The design uses two types of cams, including an assist cam and a slipper cam, that were developed based on racetrack testing and expert rider feedback. The “assist” cam acts like a servo mechanism to pull the clutch hub and operating plate together, and compress the clutch plates under load. This allows the total clutch spring count and tension to be reduced, resulting in up to a 25% overall reduction in effort at the clutch lever. The assist cam also increases the clutch’s maximum torque capacity to help it cope with the 636cc engine’s extra power without adding to the overall component mass. Whenever back-torque is present, such as during rapid braking and downshifting, the clutch’s “slipper” cam reduces clamping force on the hub and operating plate to help prevent rear-wheel hop and allow for smooth corner entry. The spring plate assembly likewise offers smooth engagement and helps minimize vibration and clutch judder.

In keeping with its racing DNA, the ZX-6R also employs a cassette-type six-speed transmission to simplify gearing changes at the track, help reduce the time needed for bike setup and allow more time for riding. Strong alloys and idealized gear thickness provide optimum gearbox durability, making it the perfect match for the torquey 636cc engine.

Track-Ready Electronics

The Ninja ZX-6R features the most up-to-date sportbike and racetrack technology offered by Kawasaki. Its three-mode Kawasaki Traction Control (KTRC) system is similar to the KTRC unit found on the flagship Ninja ZX-14R, and features even more advanced programming than the S-KTRC system used on the ZX-10R superbike. And its selectable power modes offer numerous tuning options and maximum flexibility compared to the middleweight competition.


The KTRC traction control system on the Ninja ZX-6R combines the best elements of the S-KTRC and KTRC traction control systems on Kawasaki’s two flagship sportbikes. Three different KTRC modes are selectable via a switch on the left clip-on. Mode 1 offers maximum racetrack performance, Mode 2 offers sporty street performance, and Mode 3 virtually eliminates wheelspin and improves rider confidence on slippery surfaces. Riders may also turn the system completely off for total manual throttle control.

Just like the S-KTRC system on a ZX-10R superbike, the ZX-6R’s KTRC Mode 1 and Mode 2 prioritize maximum forward acceleration. To do so, sophisticated computer algorithms predict when available traction is about to be compromised, and then initiate KTRC intervention before slippage exceeds the optimum acceleration range. This minimizes how much power must be reduced to improve or restore rear-wheel traction, while also helping to provide maximum forward drive. Operating parameters are monitored and confirmed 200 times per second, with the system using only ignition timing to regulate the engine’s power output, allowing extremely quick response. KTRC Mode 3 features similar tuning to a Concours® 14 ABS sport tourer’s traction control system. During normal operation, Mode 3 uses the same logic and control method as Mode 1 and Mode 2, but immediately switches to three-way intervention – using ignition timing, fuel delivery and the intake tract’s sub-throttles – if excessive rear-wheel spin is detected. This allows Mode 3 to reduce engine output down to a level that will allow the rear wheel to regain grip, even on very slippery surfaces.

The fine control provided by the dual throttle valves also results in a very natural throttle feel and smooth transitions no matter how quickly the rider opens the throttle. This highly effective system uses minimal hardware paired with very advanced software programming that monitors various parameters and rider inputs. The only additional hardware required by the KTRC system is a set of front and rear wheel-speed sensors so it can calculate rear-wheel slippage. In sum, the overall effects of Modes 1, 2 and 3 are easy to distinguish from each other and effectively cover a wide range of riding conditions.

Riders can select either “Full” or “Low” engine power modes via a switch on the left clip-on. The power modes allow quick adjustment the power delivery to help suit road or track conditions, or personal preference. Full mode unleashes the engine’s full performance potential. Low mode offers the same low-rpm power output, but begins to limit power as the rpm rises into the midrange and then offers only 80% of the engine’s maximum power. Low mode also delivers a softer throttle response, a handy feature when the rider wants to relax.

Combining the KTRC and Power Mode options, riders have a total of eight combinations from which to choose, and each system can be independently set to match rider skill/preference, riding location and surface conditions. An experienced rider on dry pavement might choose “Full Power” and “KTRC Mode 1” for a trackday or club race, but in wet and/or slippery conditions, that same rider might choose “Low Power” and “KTRC Mode 3.” As noted above, the various modes are easily selectable from a convenient switch on the left clip-on.

High-Performance ABS Brake System

Impressive engine and traction-control electronics are complemented by the Kawasaki Intelligent anti-lock Brake System (KIBS) on the 2015 Ninja ZX-6R ABS. The “intelligent” term is truly appropriate, considering just how smart KIBS is. It all starts with a compact and ultra-lightweight Bosch ABS control unit designed specifically for sportbikes. KIBS is a multi-sensing system that collects and monitors a wide range of data from wheel speed sensors (the same ones collecting info for the KTRC traction control system) and the bike’s engine control unit (ECU). Monitored parameters include wheel speed, brake caliper pressure, engine rpm, throttle position, clutch actuation, and current gear selection. The KIBS ABS ECU communicates with the engine’s ECU and crunches the numbers, and when it senses a potential lock-up situation, it signals the ABS unit to temporarily reduce brake-line pressure, helping the wheel to regain traction. Aside from an ultra-quick response time, additional sport-riding benefits include rear-end lift suppression during hard braking, reduced brake-lever kickback during ABS activation, and enhanced rear brake control during downshifts. Unlike in some less advanced systems, Kawasaki’s high-precision pressure control unit helps maintain brake-system performance and proper lever feel during ABS activation.

One-piece Nissin “monobloc” radial-mount brake calipers are highly rigid, offer excellent heat dissipation, and are 45 grams lighter than a comparable two-piece caliper. The monobloc calipers are paired with 310mm petal-type front rotors to help provide superb braking power, with great feel at the lever. Adopted from the ZX-10R superbike, the rear brake caliper helps offer good fade-resistance and optimum rear brake performance in conjunction with a 220mm petal-type rotor. The rear master cylinder reservoir mounts forward of the swingarm pivot to maximize free space around the footpeg. In addition, the rear brake pedal is coaxially mounted with the footpeg for excellent mid-stroke braking efficiency and optimum feel.

Suspension & Chassis

The Showa Separate Function Fork–Big Piston (SFF-BP) combines the innovative concepts of an SFF and a BPF to deliver next-generation suspension performance. The fork utilizes springs on both sides, with adjustable spring preload in the left tube and adjustable Big Piston compression and rebound damping in the right tube. All adjusters are located on the upper fork caps for convenient access. Smooth initial stroke action and excellent composure under braking are decisive BP strengths. True to its “Big Piston” name, the large-diameter damping piston in the right fork leg is much bigger than the dampers used in traditional “cartridge” forks with the same external dimensions. Since oil inside a BP fork leg acts against a much larger surface area, the damping pressure can be reduced without compromising the overall damping effectiveness. Reducing the damping pressure also allows the inner fork tube to move more smoothly, which is especially noticeable during the initial part of the stroke. The result is greater composure as the fork begins to compress, and a less severe change in chassis attitude (reduced dive) during hard braking. The SFF-BP is primarily tuned for use on twisty roads, with the tuning also allowing a high level of performance at the racetrack, and comfortable response in the city and on the highway.

Kawasaki’s patented bottom-link Uni-Trak® rear suspension offers 5.3 inches of travel and features a gas-charged shock with adjustability for spring preload, 25-position rebound damping and stepless compression damping. Linkage and lever ratios deliver impressive ride quality in both city and highway conditions.

Lightweight twin-spar aluminum frame engineering places the engine in the optimum position for superb handling and rider feedback. It features a 23.5-degree rake angle that helps quicken steering response, enhance maneuverability and promote clear communication to the rider from the front tire. It also uses low friction steering-stem seals for more precise steering inputs and lighter handling at low speeds.

Bodywork & Ergonomics

The 2015 ZX-6R bodywork features highly aggressive design elements for a characteristic and unique Ninja appearance. Large fairing openings provide increased airflow and enhanced heat dissipation, while the fairing lowers, rear cowl and assorted blacked-out body panels contribute to the bike’s compact and lightweight appearance. Projector-beam headlights are encased in a sharp-edged housing that features integrated position lamps, and a sleek one-piece front fender adds to the excellent aerodynamics. Semi-flush front turn signals are built into the bodywork, and compact rear turn signals complement the minimalist tail section. The ZX-6R’s compact LED taillight is lightweight, very bright and offers a modern high-tech appearance. And finally, a “hugger” fender above the swingarm helps reduce aerodynamic turbulence and keep the undertail area clean.

A critical feature for sportbikes, the ZX-6R’s seat, footpeg and handlebar relationship places the handlebars close to the rider and at an angle that promotes a highly intuitive and comfortable riding position. The fuel tank is flared around its top edge to provide a large leg and knee contact area, further contributing to the excellent chassis feedback. Together with a narrow lightweight aluminum rear sub-frame, the seat’s leading edge provides a slender and effective high-performance sportbike riding position, as well as a shorter reach to the pavement. This helps the Ninja appeal to an even wider range of riders.

Multi-Function Instrumentation Display

The crisp LCD instrument panel gives at-a-glance information to the rider, including an analog-style tachometer and a multi-function screen to enable the rider to select the combination of information displayed prominently. Primary functions on the LCD panel include KTRC, Power Mode and Economical Riding (ECO) indicators. Additional functions include a digital speedometer, odometer, dual trip meters, clock, instant and average fuel consumption, coolant temperature, as well as a shift indicator, traction control activity level, ABS indicator and low-fuel warning lights. A large gear-position indicator gives instant numerical gear confirmation. The mirror design offers increased rearward visibility without increasing overall vehicle width.

Supersport-grade KIBS ABS with Monobloc Nissin Calipers
– KIBS is a multi-sensing system, using input from numerous sources. In addition to front and rear wheel speed sensors (standard for any ABS system), KIBS also monitors front caliper hydraulic pressure and data from the engine’s ECU (throttle position, engine speed, clutch actuation and gear position)
– Compact, lightweight BOSCH ABS unit was designed specifically for sportbike use and made its first mass-production appearance on the 2011 Ninja ZX-10R
– Highly-precise brake pressure control enables the system to avoid a reduction in brake performance due to excessive pressure drops, and allows good brake lever feel to be maintained during KIBS intervention by providing smaller and lighter ABS pulses than comparable systems
– Supersport models frequently encounter higher braking forces than less sporting models, so there is a greater likelihood of rear tire lift under extreme deceleration. By monitoring hydraulic pressure at the front calipers, KIBS is able to regulate pressure increases and help reduce the tendency of the rear tire to lift.
– By accounting for back-torque, KIBS is able to offer increased rear brake control during downshifts. KIBS parameters include throttle position, clutch actuation and gear position, allowing the system to predict back-torque caused by trailing-throttle at high-rpm, or down-shifting. Rear wheel slip due to engine braking often triggers ABS action on standard systems, but by preventing unnecessary ABS intervention in these situations, KIBS helps enhance rear brake control

Engine & Transmission

The World Superbike Championship proven ZX-10R engine is a 16-valve, DOHC, liquid-cooled inline-four displacing 998cc through oversquare 76 x 55mm bore and stroke dimensions. Tuned for optimal power delivery on the street or track, the engine is also designed for a low center of gravity and ideal placement within the chassis, leading to more responsive handling.

Linear power delivery and engine manageability assist the rider through every element of cornering, beginning with a closed throttle at corner entry, resuming a neutral throttle position at mid-corner, and strong, controllable acceleration at corner exit. Placing the torque peak at a relatively high rpm level – closer to the engine’s horsepower peak – eliminates the power peaks and valleys, found in some engines, that make it difficult for racers and track-day riders to open the throttle with confidence.

Large intake valves are complemented by wide, polished intake ports for controllable power delivery and engine braking, just right for smoothing out racetrack corner entries and exits. Manufactured from chromoly steel, the dual overhead camshafts further contribute to optimized engine braking and more controllable power delivery. Lightweight pistons mount to light and strong connecting rods, and yield a full 13.1:1 compression ratio.

Like the ZX-6R, the ZX-10R has a race-style cassette transmission that allows simple trackside ratio changes. An adjustable back-torque limiting clutch assembly is fitted, which helps improve smoothness and rider confidence during quick downshifts and corner entry.

Delivering fuel and air into the engine is a ram-air assisted fuel injection system featuring an enormous nine-liter capacity airbox, large 47mm throttle bodies and sub-throttle valves, and secondary injectors that improve top-end power characteristics. A huge ram-air intake is positioned close to the front of the bike for efficient airbox filling and peak power.

The final piece of the ZX-10R’s power-production formula is an exhaust system featuring a race-spec titanium header assembly, hydroformed collectors, a large-volume pre-chamber containing two catalyzers, and a highly compact silencer. The header pipe diameter and length are very similar to race–use headers. This makes it easy to increase circuit performance just by adding a competition-use only slip-on muffler.

Sport-Kawasaki Traction Control (S-KTRC)

Motorcyclists are continually challenged by traction-related issues – whether on the street, track or off road. This is especially true for riders of open-class sportbikes, whose power and dynamic capabilities exceed the performance of top-shelf race bikes from just a few years ago. Given the huge performance envelope of the 2015 ZX-10R, consistent traction and enhanced confidence are major assets.

The ZX-10R’s racing-derived Sport-Kawasaki Traction Control (S-KTRC) system works by analyzing data from a variety of sensors including front and rear wheel speed, engine rpm, throttle position, acceleration and more. Conditions are confirmed every 5 milliseconds, at which time the system looks at each of the parameters as well as how much they are changing. This unique Kawasaki method makes it possible to interpolate and predict how the bike will behave in the next instant. In fact, the ZX-10R data acquisition and analysis is greater than any other Kawasaki in history – and it’s all to help track riders inch closer to the elusive “edge” of maximum traction than ever before. The S-KTRC system relies on complex software embedded in the ZX-10R’s Electronic Control Unit (ECU), with lightweight speed sensors on each wheel as the only additional hardware.

Unlike the KTRC system on Kawasaki’s Concours® 14 ABS sport tourer, which primarily minimizes wheel slip on slick or broken surfaces as a rider aid, the S-KTRC system is designed to maximize performance by using sophisticated computer analysis to predict when traction conditions are about to become unfavorable. By quickly but subtly reducing power just before the amount of slippage exceeds the optimal traction zone, the system – which processes every data point 200 times per second – maintains the optimum level of tire grip to maximize forward motion with a minimum of intrusion felt by the rider. The result is significantly better lap times and enhanced confidence – exactly what riders need when piloting a machine of this caliber.
The S-KTRC system offers three different modes of operation, which riders can select according to surface conditions, personal preference and skill level: Level 1 for maximum grip on the track; Level 2 for intermediate use; and Level 3 for slippery conditions. An LCD graph in the multi-function instrument display shows how much electronic intervention is occurring in real time, and a thumb switch on the left handlebar pod allows simple, on-the-go mode changes to suit the rider’s style. Riders may also turn the system completely off for total manual throttle control.

Chassis & Suspension

With the engine producing a massive quantity of usable and controllable power, engineers focused on refining the handling and overall road/track competency of the chassis. The cast-aluminum twin-spar frame is created from just seven pieces and features optimized flex characteristics for ideal rider feedback, cornering performance and light weight. The swingarm is also cast-aluminum, with rigidity engineered to match the frame.

Chassis geometry offers excellent handling and stability. The front-end geometry – 25 degrees of rake and 107mm (4.21 in.) of trail – allows light, quick handling along with reassuring stability at speed, perfectly complementing the engine’s controllable power and the frame and swingarm’s flex characteristics.

Highly advanced suspension helps the ZX-10R excel in all types of riding. Up front is a 43mm open-class version of Kawasaki’s highly acclaimed Big Piston Fork (BPF). Featuring a piston design nearly twice the size of a conventional cartridge fork’s, the BPF offers smooth action, less stiction, light weight and enhanced damping performance on both compression and rebound circuits. This compliance results in more control and better feedback – just what riders need when carving through a bumpy sweeper at the track or negotiating a decreasing-radius corner on their favorite backroad.

Rear suspension duties on the ZX-10R are handled by a Horizontal Back-Link design that positions the shock and linkage above the swingarm. Benefits include improved mass centralization, excellent road holding, compliance and stability, smooth action in the mid-stroke and good overall feedback. The fully adjustable shock features a piggyback reservoir and dual-range (low- and high-speed) compression damping.

Lightweight, gravity-cast three-spoke wheels complement the ZX-10R’s 17-inch radial supersport tires. Up front, Tokico radial-mount calipers squeeze 310mm petal rotors, while a lightweight single-piston caliper grabs a 220mm petal rotor in back. The result is powerful stopping with plenty of rider feedback and confidence.

Öhlins Twin-Tube Steering Damper

Kawasaki developed the ZX-10R’s electronic steering damper in joint cooperation with Öhlins. Controlled by a dedicated ECU located under the gas-tank cover, this damper reacts to the rate of acceleration or deceleration, along with rear-wheel speed, to help provide the ideal damping-force level across a wide range of riding scenarios. Its variable damping capability provides optimum rider feedback by permitting softer damping for normal operation and firm damping for high-speed stability. The result is a light and nimble steering feel at low speed, and superior stability at higher speeds and during extreme acceleration or deceleration. The anodized damper unit incorporates Öhlins’ twin-tube design to help ensure stable damping performance and superior kickback absorption. It is mounted horizontally at the front of the fuel tank, requires very few additional components, and adds almost no weight compared to previous-generation steering dampers.

Bodywork, Lighting & Instrumentation

Kawasaki engineers wrapped the ZX-10R’s formidable technology in bodywork as advanced and stylish as anything this side of a World Superbike Championship grid. Curvy edges and contrasting colored and black parts create a sharp, aggressive image, while distinctive line-beam headlights permit using a more compact front fairing. LED turn signals integrate smoothly into the mirror assemblies, and convenient turn-signal couplers allow easy mirror removal for track days. The rear fender assembly holding the rear signal stalks and license plate frame is also designed to be easily removable for track use. High-visibility LED lamps are additionally used for the taillight and position marker.

Instrumentation is highlighted by an LED-backlit bar-graph tachometer set above a multi-function LCD display providing numerous sections and data panels. A wide range of information is available, including speed, odometer, dual trip meters, fuel consumption, Power Mode and S-KTRC level, low fuel warning, coolant temperature and much more. For track use, the LCD display can be set to “race” mode, which moves the gear-position function to the center of the display.

Conditions are confirmed every 5 milliseconds, at which time the system looks at each of the parameters as well as how much they are changing. This unique Kawasaki method makes it possible to interpolate and predict how the bike will behave in the next instant. In fact, the ZX-10R data acquisition and analysis is greater than any other Kawasaki in history – and it’s all to help track riders inch closer to the elusive “edge” of maximum traction than ever before. The S-KTRC system relies on complex software embedded in the ZX-10R’s Electronic Control Unit (ECU), with lightweight speed sensors on each wheel as the only additional hardware. 


Unlike the KTRC system on Kawasaki’s Concours® 14 ABS sport tourer, which primarily minimizes wheel slip on slick or broken surfaces as a rider aid, the S-KTRC system is designed to maximize performance by using sophisticated computer analysis to predict when traction conditions are about to become unfavorable. By quickly but subtly reducing power just before the amount of slippage exceeds the optimal traction zone, the system – which processes every data point 200 times per second – maintains the optimum level of tire grip to maximize forward motion with a minimum of intrusion felt by the rider. The result is significantly better lap times and enhanced confidence – exactly what riders need when piloting a machine of this caliber.
The S-KTRC system offers three different modes of operation, which riders can select according to surface conditions, personal preference and skill level: Level 1 for maximum grip on the track; Level 2 for intermediate use; and Level 3 for slippery conditions. An LCD graph in the multi-function instrument display shows how much electronic intervention is occurring in real time, and a thumb switch on the left handlebar pod allows simple, on-the-go mode changes to suit the rider’s style. Riders may also turn the system completely off for total manual throttle control.


Chassis & Suspension


With the engine producing a massive quantity of usable and controllable power, engineers focused on refining the handling and overall road/track competency of the chassis. The cast-aluminum twin-spar frame is created from just seven pieces and features optimized flex characteristics for ideal rider feedback, cornering performance and light weight. The swingarm is also cast-aluminum, with rigidity engineered to match the frame.


Chassis geometry offers excellent handling and stability. The front-end geometry – 25 degrees of rake and 107mm (4.21 in.) of trail – allows light, quick handling along with reassuring stability at speed, perfectly complementing the engine’s controllable power and the frame and swingarm’s flex characteristics.


Highly advanced suspension helps the ZX-10R excel in all types of riding. Up front is a 43mm open-class version of Kawasaki’s highly acclaimed Big Piston Fork (BPF). Featuring a piston design nearly twice the size of a conventional cartridge fork’s, the BPF offers smooth action, less stiction, light weight and enhanced damping performance on both compression and rebound circuits. This compliance results in more control and better feedback – just what riders need when carving through a bumpy sweeper at the track or negotiating a decreasing-radius corner on their favorite backroad.


Rear suspension duties on the ZX-10R are handled by a Horizontal Back-Link design that positions the shock and linkage above the swingarm. Benefits include improved mass centralization, excellent road holding, compliance and stability, smooth action in the mid-stroke and good overall feedback. The fully adjustable shock features a piggyback reservoir and dual-range (low- and high-speed) compression damping. 


Lightweight, gravity-cast three-spoke wheels complement the ZX-10R’s 17-inch radial supersport tires. Up front, Tokico radial-mount calipers squeeze 310mm petal rotors, while a lightweight single-piston caliper grabs a 220mm petal rotor in back. The result is powerful stopping with plenty of rider feedback and confidence.


Kawasaki Intelligent anti-lock Brake System (KIBS)


At first, anti-lock braking might seem out of place on a purebred sportbike, but the ZX-10R ABS system was specifically designed to maximize performance on the street and track. As a result, the high-performance Kawasaki Intelligent anti-lock Brake System (KIBS) really is intelligent, as it utilizes a small and lightweight ABS unit designed by Bosch specifically with sportbikes in mind. The entire system only adds about 7 pounds of weight compared to the non-ABS equipped 2015 ZX-10R, with a full pound of that weight accounted for by the ABS model’s larger battery.


KIBS is a multi-sensing system that collects and monitors a wide range of information from wheel sensors (the same ones collecting data on the standard ZX-10R for its S-KTRC traction control system) and the bike’s ECU. This data set includes wheel speed, brake-caliper hydraulic pressure, engine rpm, throttle position, clutch actuation and gear position. The ABS ECU compares data continually with the 10R’s powertrain ECU. When the system determines a potential wheel lock-up situation is occurring, it tells the Bosch ABS unit to temporarily reduce brake-line hydraulic pressure for that wheel, allowing the wheel to regain traction. It all happens automatically and nearly instantaneously, in many cases interpreting and correcting traction loss before the rider is even aware of it.


Besides its ultra-quick response time, KIBS offers a number of additional sport-riding benefits, including rear-end lift suppression during hard braking, minimal lever kickback during ABS intervention, and increased rear-brake control during downshifts. Of great benefit to track riders, highly precise pressure control allows the system to maintain excellent braking performance and proper lever feel while also minimizing ABS pulses.


Öhlins Twin-Tube Steering Damper


Kawasaki developed the ZX-10R’s electronic steering damper in joint cooperation with Öhlins. Controlled by a dedicated ECU located under the gas-tank cover, this damper reacts to the rate of acceleration or deceleration, along with rear-wheel speed, to help provide the ideal damping-force level across a wide range of riding scenarios. Its variable damping capability provides optimum rider feedback by permitting softer damping for normal operation and firm damping for high-speed stability. The result is a light and nimble steering feel at low speed, and superior stability at higher speeds and during extreme acceleration or deceleration. The anodized damper unit incorporates Öhlins’ twin-tube design to help ensure stable damping performance and superior kickback absorption. It is mounted horizontally at the front of the fuel tank, requires very few additional components, and adds almost no weight compared to previous-generation steering dampers.

Bodywork, Lighting & Instrumentation


Kawasaki engineers wrapped the ZX-10R’s formidable technology in bodywork as advanced and stylish as anything this side of a World Superbike Championship grid. Curvy edges and contrasting colored and black parts create a sharp, aggressive image, while distinctive line-beam headlights permit using a more compact front fairing. LED turn signals integrate smoothly into the mirror assemblies, and convenient turn-signal couplers allow easy mirror removal for track days. The rear fender assembly holding the rear signal stalks and license plate frame is also designed to be easily removable for track use. High-visibility LED lamps are additionally used for the taillight and position marker.


Instrumentation is highlighted by an LED-backlit bar-graph tachometer set above a multi-function LCD display providing numerous sections and data panels. A wide range of information is available, including speed, odometer, dual trip meters, fuel consumption, Power Mode and S-KTRC level, low fuel warning, coolant temperature and much more. For track use, the LCD display can be set to “race” mode, which moves the gear-position function to the center of the display.

Big Piston Fork (BPF)

– Oil inside the BPF acts on a surface area almost four times the size of a conventional fork’s. The larger surface area allows damping pressure to be reduced while helping to ensure that damping force remains the same
– Reducing damping pressure allows the inner fork tube to move more smoothly, which is especially noticeable at the initial part of the stroke. The result is greater control as the fork compresses and very calm attitude change as vehicle weight shifts forward under braking, and contributing to greater chassis stability on corner entry
