Jody Barry Wins Seven Races During CRA/CCS Combined Event

Brainerd, MN – Much like the weather, Farrell Performance rider Jody Barry stormed into the combined CRA/CCS weekend June 15-17 on Brainerd International Raceway’s Competition Course. While expectations were high for the multi-time AMA Grand Champion, the ferocity with which he attacked his first ever race at Brainerd International Raceway caught quite a few people off-guard and legitimately made it impossible for any other race during the weekend to be as exciting.

Saturday’s Middleweight Supersport race saw Barry line up last in a grid of almost 40 Expert riders creating a very difficult situation for him in his quest to get to the front of the pack. A fantastic first lap put him in ninth-place as he crossed the finish line but shortly after that the race was halted due to lightning. After a short break the riders re-gridded for a complete restart in the very wet conditions and Justin Ebnet dropped the hammer from the start, opening a lead of close to three seconds on the first lap. Barry methodically picked off riders on his way to the front but by the time he reached second place, Ebnet’s lead looked unassailable. Well, it looked that way to everyone but Barry. At the start of the last lap, the gap between Ebnet and Barry was more than two seconds. Undeterred, he charged on, closing the gap considerably. With five corners left in the race and a gap of almost one second, Ebnet’s lead was secure and the win was his. Or was it? In honestly one of the best examples of a never-give-up attitude, Barry was right on Ebnet’s rear tire as they entered the second-to-last corner and a fantastic move out of the last corner got him along side Ebnet on the run to the line. The two crossed the finish line in a photo-finish (these days, that’s what we say when we have to look at the timing & scoring app to see what the gap was) with Jody Barry taking the win by .012 seconds!

If that wasn’t enough to get the weekend off to a heart-pounding start, Barry decided that in honor of his amazing triumph he would tuck the front braking hard for the turn immediately after the finish line, fall off and stylishly slide to a stop like baseball star Barry Bonds sliding into home plate (or base, or whatever it’s called – I don’t watch baseball). By “stylishly slide”, it was more of a turtle stuck on its back with arms and legs flailing but it was entertaining nonetheless. The epic finish instantly earned Barry a large contingent of fans while also making the many young women in attendance (and probably the CRA announcer) swoon.

When Barry wasn’t taking top honors it was left to Ebnet, Jake Schmotter and Kyle Ohnsorg to bring home victories in the other Middleweight/Heavyweight Expert races. The Novice Middleweight/Heavyweight races saw some unexpected challengers to the assumed dominance of Justin Miest. After a fantastic opening weekend, Miest was clearly the on-form rider in the Novice ranks but highsiding during the warmup lap of the wet restart of the first race of the weekend perhaps shook his confidence a bit, allowing Nick Johnson and Joel Nelson to pick up a win apiece. Mike Scherlin threw down the gauntlet by taking four wins and earning an unofficial honorable-mention in the rider of the weekend voting.

One of the big stories of the weekend was the second running of the Michelin Cup race. The excitement for this race was renewed when the challenges of Brainerd International Raceway’s Competition Course made it clear that traffic management was going to be of utmost importance during the qualifying session as well as the race. The qualifying session for the GP3/GP4 class played out like many national- and international-level qualifying sessions with some riders timing their runs on new tires to find a portion of track free of traffic, other riders latching onto faster riders to get a tow and resulted in an incredibly close front row. Jake Schmotter landed pole position for the GP3/4 race by .007 over Tom Austin and Schmotter carried that pace into the race as he led from start to finish. Kyle Ohnsorg and Brian Hebeisen put in valiant efforts on their Yamaha R6s to steal the win from Yamaha R1-mounted Schmotter but great traffic management by Schmotter in the closing laps gave him a gap of roughly two seconds, which he held until he took the checkered flag.

With Unlimited Expert victories being shared by Ohnsorg and Schmotter, the performance of Brett Donahue on his Suzuki GSX-R750 could have easily gone overlooked as the veteran rider put on many inspiring rides to finish on the podium in multiple races. If his good form continues, there will undoubtedly be a return trip to the top of the podium before the season is over. The Unlimited Novice races featured many intense battles with P.R. Stafki notching up three wins compared to two wins for Steve Luckert and one win for Terry Martin. Terry Martin was able to bring home an honor that even he is unaware of by taking the award for Most Infectious Enthusiasm. That award usually goes to either Billy Lachmiller of TreeTree Racing or Cheap Thrills Moto’s Chase Sellers so Martin has joined some very good company.

The Lightweight Expert races featured the return of Drew Jankord to the front of the pack at Brainerd International Raceway. No stranger to victory lane, Jankord showed the CRA regulars the tail of his Suzuki SV650 in three races but was nice enough to let Bill Plucky and Adam Harrison take their turn on the top of the podium in the three races he didn’t win. Lightweight Novice featured a great showing by Tom Conroy and Kyle Franz with Conroy winning both Supersport races and Franz taking four wins on his Futurestar Yamaha FZ-07.

New for 2018, the 90’s Cup class is becoming known for its great races with riders on machinery born in the 90’s. Amongst the Experts, Leif Nadeau claimed four wins on his Yamaha R6 compared to two wins for Adam Harrison and his Honda CBR600F2. The Novice 90’s Cup was simply dominated by fan favorite and Saturday’s rider of the day, Wayne Minnichsoffer. Wayne’s performances made his opponents seem almost non-existent as he won every Novice 90’s Cup race. Wait a minute… hold on… let me check my notes for a second. Ahhh, it makes sense now. Minnichsoffer HAD no opponents in the Novice 90’s Cup races. So way to go, Wayne. Good job on beating absolutely no one.

Ultralight Expert saw a new face at the front of the field with Dan Mataczynski throwing a leg over the Krämer Motorcycles USA demo HKR Evo 2 and winning a few races. While Mataczynski is no slouch behind the bars, it says a lot for the Krämer when a rider can win races on it after very little practice time. To prove how good the Krämer is, Jack Barton won all of the other Ultralight Expert races aside from one on his HKR Evo 2 with Billy Lachmiller shocking the world by competing with his transponder mounted on the correct bike AND taking a win in the same race!

The difficult weather conditions seen in some of the Featherweight Novice races brought some new faces to victory lane with Karyna Veisberg and David Schaenzer taking their first CRA wins, joining Justin Miest and Kurt Ohnsorg as race winners in the class.

The CRA will be in action on Brainerd International Raceway’s Competition Course July 20-22, 2018 and we hope to see you all there!
