Hurtado Starts Strong with ASMA at Arroyo Seco Raceway

Last Sunday, March 13 was the first round of ASMA racing at Arroyo Seco Raceway near Deming, New Mexico. Expert David Hurtado won both races he entered, thereby making a clear statement that he will once again be a popular vote to retake the throne he held for consecutive years in 2013 and 2014.

Last season, Hurtado surrendered the top position in the premier event Formula Arroyo sponsored by Evan Steel Performance when he missed the fifth and sixth round. He went on to finish the season third behind champion Thibault Few and runner-up Ben Alarcon, but is confident he won’t miss out on any racing action this season at Arroyo Seco Raceway.

The Unlimited Superstock sponsored by kurveygirl.com, the first race of the day, was dominated by Hurtado and his Kawasaki ZX-10R, who set the fastest lap of the entire day with a 1:08.721. Jason Brown and his Suzuki GSX-R1000 seized the holeshot, but Hurtado, gridded eighth on the third row, took the lead on lap three and had no trouble defending it the rest of the race as he built an immediate gap and walked away from the rest of the group. The first three to the checkers were Hurtado, Mikey Shreve on his Yamaha YZF-R1, and Jason Brown.

The Formula Arroyo began with holeshot-hero Brown once again entering the Horseshoe first, with Hurtado, Shreve, and reigning champ Few hot on his tail. On lap two Shreve showed Hurtado a tire on the front straight, but Hurtado defended the two spot with a late brake into the Horseshoe. One lap later and Hurtado made a bid for the lead when he overtook Brown briefly with a shallow entry into the Horseshoe, but Brown had more drive and was able to reclaim the lead on the exit.

Hurtado made a pass stick on lap four when he dove into Yucca and snatched the lead. But he didn’t walk away this time around as Shreve fought tooth and nail past Brown and didn’t allow Hurtado to disappear on the horizon. Shreve’s lightning-fast laps got him nearer to Hurtado’s rear tire, and the two matched pace until just before the white flag when Shreve became Hurtado’s shadow, due to more drive on the back straight and late braking into the Carousel that follows just after. But Shreve was unable to make a pass and Hurtado crossed the finish line first with Shreve only 0.109 seconds behind.

David Hurtado:

“Last season I was on a GSX-R1000, which felt heavier and I had to fight it to turn. But this ZX-10R is a like a 600 on rails! It has amazing agility and better drives.”

Mikey Shreve:

“I’m very pleased with today’s results. I came back from a big crash last month at Chuckwalla in California, and I didn’t expect to be back on a racetrack so quickly, thanks to Speedin’ Motorsports. I knew I could outbreak him (Hurtado), but after I let off the brake, the front end would chatter, so I gained confidence and waited for a mistake that never came.”
