Adams, Cleland Grab Four Wins Each at Hallett with the CMRA

Daniel Adams and Brandon Cleland both took four wins in heated competition during the Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association’s (CMRA) fourth round of Bridgestone/CMRA Championship sprints at the Second Annual Westby Classic this past Sunday, May 15. Temperatures in the low 70’s F with partially cloudy weather and a light breeze made for a second day of fast times on the 1.8 mile, 11-turn course at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit in Hallett, Oklahoma.

The Lightweight grids stayed strong this weekend, as the Formula 2, Lightweight Twins, D Superstock, and D Superbike grids stayed around 20 entries each. Adams rose above the competition, going four for four on his Suzuki SV650, winning Century Trucks and Vans – Formula 2 Expert, Century Trucks and Vans – D Superbike Expert, D Superstock Expert, and Lightweight Twins Expert, and turning an amazing fastest lap of 1:20.551.

Cleland swept the fields as he rode his RES-prepped, Pirelli-shod Yamaha YZF-R6 to grab the wins in South Central Race Center – C Superstock Expert, C Superbike Expert, 212Decals.com – A Superbike Expert, and M4 Exhaust Formula 1 Expert.

Morning qualifying for the M4 Exhaust/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert race was exciting, with Cleland turning an awesome 1:16.535 to take pole position. Craig Montgomery ran a 1:17.431 with his Kawasaki ZX-10R, grabbing second, and Brandon Young pulled a 1:18.167 aboard his problematic Suzuki GSX-R1000 to round out the front row.

The starting lights went out, and the 17 bike grid shot forward. Cleland and Montgomery rocketed off the line with Young shadowing them. Dewayne Davis astride a Suzuki GSX-R1000 and Jordan Pence wringing a Yamaha YZF-R6’s neck were all over Young like a cheap suit chasing down the leaders. Garet Tomlinson on Yamaha YZF-R6 and Suzuki GSX-R600 mounted Alonzo Contreras smacked each other around as they battled for fifth, with Ron Mears aboard his Honda CBR600 patiently stalking them.

Cleland and Montgomery went at it like cats and dogs, with Cleland turning the fastest lap of the race and weekend on Lap 5, throwing down a red-hot 1:15.739. Montgomery answered with a blazing 1:15.939, refusing to be shaken. Young gave chase with a furious 1:16.700, but as his bike began overheating, he dropped back, and Davis and Pence seized the opportunity to get around him. Tomlinson and Contreras were still locked in battle, with Mears angling for an opening. Joseph Caruso resolutely held off both Suzuki GSX-R1000 mounted Jeff Wrobel and Kawasaki ZX-10R mounted Sean Gurevich with his BMW S1000RR. In the final laps of the race, Cleland slipped Montgomery’s grasp and took the checkers 4.653 seconds ahead of the field for the win. Montgomery crossed next, followed by Davis, Pence, and Tomlinson. Contreras, Mears, Caruso, Wrobel, and Gurevich rounded out the top 10. Cleland also won the $100 P1 Racing cash purse for riding the first 600 across the finish line again during the Formula 1 race.

Brian Yuan was Top Novice this weekend for his efforts, taking an impressive four wins in North Texas Superbikes – B Superbike Novice, OnRoad OffRoad Suspension – A Superstock Novice, North Texas Superbikes – A Superbike Novice, SpeedFreakDecals.com – Formula 1 Novice and turning a 1:19.797 for a fastest lap aboard his Suzuki GSX-R750.

Brandon Young was the first winner of the new “Racer’s Race” award for overcoming a slew of mechanical issues, still competing, and grabbing two podiums out of his three races, with second in RaceworX – A Superstock Expert and third in 212Decals.com – A Superbike Expert.

Daisy DeSimone once again won the “Jennifer Millsap Get it Girl” $100 award sponsored by A.G. Horn, on her Suzuki GSXR-750 for her combined finishes in five races; Lone Star Track Days – B Superstock Novice, North Texas Superbikes – B Superbike Novice, SpeedFreakDecals.com – Formula 1 Novice, Crazy Jack’s Powersports – Formula 40 HW Novice, and North Texas Superbikes – F1 Ladies.
