Adams, Cleland, Thornton Take Multiple Wins with the CMRA at MSR Houston

Brandon Cleland won a nail biting Formula 1 Expert race and grabbed another win in very stiff competition during the Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association’s (CMRA) first round of Bridgestone/CMRA Championship sprints this past Sunday, February 21, at MSR Houston in Angleton, Texas.

A second day of temperatures in the mid-70s F and partially cloudy weather with a light breeze made for great racing conditions on the 17-turn, 2.4-mile full course.

Returning from six months of downtime due to an AC separation that required surgery, Cleland rode his RES-prepped, Pirelli-shod Yamaha YZF-R6 in thrilling racing action, snatching the wins in M4 Exhaust/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert and South Central Race Center – C Superstock Expert. Cleland had the crowd on their feet again twice after that, when he tipped over while leading the A Superbike Expert race, got back up, and hustled back to finish eighth on a 43-bike grid. In the afternoon’s C Superbike Expert race, he again had the lead by over eight seconds when his motor let go.

Cleland had this to say about his roller-coaster day, “Overall the weekend was a success, and for being off for six months, it was refreshing to know we still got it. Our results are proof that we are backed by some really good people, but the secret is still in the box #milleniumbox. I’d like to thank Steve Upchurch at RES, John Hutchinson at Pirelli tires, Shand Garcia at Shocksox, and Jimmy Cambora at RaceworX Suspension.”

Eddie Thornton was the strongest in Heavyweights, taking two wins in 212Decals.com – A Superbike Expert, RaceworX – A Superstock Expert, and third in M4 Exhaust/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert on his Yamaha YZF-R1M. Thornton also had the fastest lap of the weekend with a 1:32.535 on lap three of A Superbike Expert.

The M4 Exhaust/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert race was shaping up to be a great one, with morning qualifying already having times in the mid to lower 1:30’s. As the 27 bike grid lined up, it was a battle brewing between the Yamaha YZF-R6’s and the Yamaha YZF-R1M’s. Cleland was on the pole, with James Camacho Jr. on a Yamaha YZF-R6 and Craig Montgomery on a Kawasaki ZX-10R rounding out the front row.

The starting lights went out, Cleland and Camacho took off with Montgomery all over them like a cheap suit. Carlos Lescale riding a BMW S1000RR had his hands full with Jeff Wrobel on a Suzuki GSXR-1000 and Ron Mears aboard a modern classic Honda CBR600. Thornton, who missed morning qualifying, came slicing up from the row nine of the grid like a hot knife through butter to join the fray. Tim Rose, also on a Yamaha YZF-R1M, caught a tow on Thornton from sixth. Alonzo Contreras on a Suzuki GSXR-600 went at it hammer and tongs with Brandon Young on his Suzuki GSXR-1000, rounding out the front of the pack.

Cleland ran the fastest lap of the race, turning a 1:33.129 on lap 4, barely holding off Camacho with a 1:33.269. Thornton shot up into third with a 1:33.425 and Rose bumped Montgomery for fourth throwing down a 1:34.676. You could’ve thrown a blanket over Cleland and Camacho as they took the checkers, with Cleland taking the win by a thin 0.101 of a second over Camacho. Thornton crossed the line third, with Rose hanging onto fourth, Montgomery took fifth, and Lescale, Wrobel, Mears, Contreras, and Young rounded out the top 10. Cleland also won the $100 P1 Racing cash purse for riding the first 600 across the finish line again during the Formula 1 race.

Daniel Adams started the defense of his number 1 plate this weekend with some serious competition in the Lightweights. Adams persevered and rode the wheels off his Suzuki SV650, putting down a fastest lap of 1:38.947 and winning Century Trucks and Vans – Formula 2 Expert, Century Trucks and Vans – D Superbike Expert and taking second in Lightweight Twins Expert.

Terence Ladner got the Top Novice spot, with four wins in North Texas Superbikes – A Superbike Novice, OnRoad OffRoad Suspension – A Superstock Novice, SpeedFreakDecals.com –Formula 1 Novice, and Crazy Jack’s Powersports – Formula 40 Heavyweight Novice on his Yamaha YZF-R1M.

Daisy DeSimone won the “Jennifer Millsap Get it Girl” $100 award, sponsored by A.G. Horn, for her combined finishes in four races on her Suzuki GSXR-750.

Of special note, 11-year-old Saturday Mini Sprinter Brylin Schrock rode a Honda RS125 provided by Mark and Ryan Andrews for the first time in Sunday’s races. He gridded up in Suzuki SV650 classes and walked away with fantastic results, turning a 1:46.837 and taking the wins in Formula 2 Novice, Lightweight Twins Novice, and Formula 3.
