Cleland, Thornton Star During CMRA Sprint Races At Texas World Speedway

Eddie Thornton won the Formula 1 race and logged two more podiums while Brandon Cleland took home five podiums during the Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association (CMRA) event this past Sunday, March 22, on the 2.9-mile road course at Texas World Speedway in College Station, Texas. This was the final time a motorcycle racing event would ever be held at this storied race track. Cloudy skies, temperatures in the low 60s with a light breeze coupled with heavy rain from the day before made for slick racing conditions.

Thornton turned the fastest lap of the weekend on Lap 2 of the premiere Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert, running a 1:44.481. Thornton went on to take three podiums total, winning Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert, B Superbike Expert, and second in 212Decals.com – A Superbike Expert.

Cleland continued his title defense by proving to be the fastest on a 600 once again, taking five podiums total, winning South Central Race Center – C Superstock Expert, C Superbike Expert, Raceworx – A Superstock Expert, 212Decals.com – A Superbike Expert, and taking second place in Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert. Cleland also won the $100 P1 Racing cash purse for riding the first 600 across the finish line again during the Formula 1 race.

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert race promised to be a nail biter, with a battle already brewing between Eddie Thornton on his Pirelli shod BMW S1000RR and Brandon Cleland, aboard his Pirelli shod Yamaha YZF-R6. As the 23-bike grid lined up for the start, Thornton had the pole with Cleland in second.

The starting lights went out, and Thornton put his head down and ran. Cleland furiously pursued him, and the race leaders edged away from the rest of the field. Thornton crushed Lap 2 with a 1:44.481, and Cleland ran a 1:44.870 while chasing him, and the two were so close you could throw a blanket over them the entire race. Young Canadian racer, Braeden Ortt, aboard a Yamaha YZF-R6 turned a 1:48.711 in the battle for third with Eric Williams, also on a Yamaha YZF-R6. Suzuki GSX-R1000 mounted Craig Montgomery had his hands full with Brandon Young aboard a KTM RC8 while wrestling for fifth, turning a 1:50.591 for his fastest lap. As the final laps wound down, Thornton squeezed ahead of Cleland by a meager 0.568 seconds to take the win. Cleland crossed the line second, Ortt held on to third, Williams snagged fourth with Montgomery in fifth. Young crossed the line sixth, Joseph Caruso, Shawn Randall, Jeff Wrobel, and Todd Larson rounded out the top 10.

Jacob Napier took the Top Novice spot again, riding his Suzuki GSX-R750 to five wins in SpeedFreakDecals.com – Formula 1 Novice, OnRoad OffRoad Suspension – A Superstock Novice, North Texas Superbikes – A Superbike Novice, Lone Star Track Days – B Superstock Novice, and North Texas Superbikes – B Superbike Novice.

Megan Wanat won the “Go Girl” $100 award, sponsored by A. Horn, for her combined finishes in four races. Brandie Cox was the previous winner at MSR Houston in February.
