Beaubier Snags Superbike Pole At Indy
Bobby Fong Gets Supersport Pole At The Brickyard
INDIANAPOLIS, IN, AUG. 7 – Monster Energy/Graves Motorsports Yamaha’s Cameron Beaubier used some of the knowledge gained from racing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway back in 2009, a Yamaha R1 that rolled out of the truck ready to go, and the confidence gained from racing last week in Germany to earn pole position on a sunny Friday afternoon at the Brickyard.
Beaubier, who raced in the 125cc Grand Prix at the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix as a 16 year old, lapped at 1:37.247 to earn his third pole position of the season in the eight round of the MotoAmerica AMA/FIM North America Superbike Series. That lap put him .702 of a second ahead of Yoshimura Suzuki’s Roger Hayden, the Kentuckian fired up and racing in front of family and friends in what is his home round. Third fastest on Friday was Beaubier’s teammate Josh Hayes, the four time and defending Superbike Champion struggling to match his fellow Yamaha rider’s pace. Hayes ended up a tick over a second slower than Beaubier.
“Definitely I came in knowing I had a little advantage just knowing the track,” Beaubier said. “But yesterday I went out in the rain and it looked quite a bit different than what I remembered at least with the new pavement and with opening up the final chicane a little bit. It was good to at least know where we were going. I know Josh will be right there in the races, though. It’s going to be a tough 18 laps. I’m just going to put my head down and try to click off some good laps. I felt good right when they rolled the bike off the truck. We haven’t really made too many changes here. Just trying to work on my riding a little bit. I also think that it was good staying on the bike last weekend. Just more riding time and that’s what I’ve been struggling with in the past.”
Fourth fastest and fastest of the Superstock 1000 riders was Roadrace Factory’s Jake Gagne, the R1-mounted Californian besting HSBK Aprilia’s Sheridan Morais. Yoshimura Suzuki’s Jake Lewis will complete row two on his Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000 Superbike. Lewis escaped uninjured from a crash during final qualifying.
Row three for the two Superbike races (one on Saturday, the other on Sunday) will consist of TOBC Racing’s Taylor Knapp, Westby Racing’s Josh Day and Hayes Brakes BMW’s Steve Rapp.
The Supersport class also held its qualifying session on Friday with the lone 600cc race this weekend scheduled for Saturday afternoon. At the top of the heap in qualifying was Latus Racing Triumph’s Bobby Fong, the Californian taking pole for the second straight race.
Fong will be joined on the front row by championship points leader JD Beach and his Yamalube/Y.E.S./Graves Motorsports teammate Garrett Gerloff. Josh Herrin, the only rider who can prevent Beach from wrapping up the 2016 Supersport title, will start the race from row two. inal race of the day gets rolling at 4:45 p.m. with the second MotoAmerica Superbike race.
