Roadracingworld.com’s Chris Ulrich won all three races he entered at the WERA West season–opener Sunday at Auto Club Speedway, in Fontana, California.
Riding a Dunlop-shod Kawasaki ZX-10R tuned by Joey Lombardo and Carry Andrew, Ulrich took victories in A Superstock, A Superbike and Formula One.
Stockton Moto’s Bobby Fong finished second to Ulrich in Formula One and A Superstock. It was Fong’s first time racing a 1000cc machine.
Defending WERA West A Superbike Champion Alessandro Assanti was the runner-up to Ulrich in the A Superbike sprint and third in A Superstock and Formula One.
Kawasaki R&D test rider Derek Keyes finished third in A Superbike on a ZX-10R that was completely stock except for race bodywork and Dunlop DOT-labeled tires.
Premier Home Entertainment’s Michael Beck came from behind to beat C.C.C.I.’s Jimmy Wood in C Superbike, but Wood got the win in the red-flag-interrupted C Superstock race.
Beck was one of several riders who crashed on the opening lap of the C Superstock race, which was held as darkness fell on the track and temperatures dropped dramatically. Beck said he highsided coming out of the Turn Three chicane and suspected he broke his right wrist. He said he planned to see orthopedic surgeon and track day rider Dr. Thomas Bryan Sunday night.
Darkness prevented two races (Formula Two Expert/Novice, B Superstock Expert/Novice) from being run.
The event fell behind schedule early due to crashes during practice and then fell even further behind when racer Joe Lopez suffered a nasty crash during the C Superbike Novice race.
Lopez was quickly attended to by Auto Club Speedway’s safety and medical staff, including a physician, but Lopez succumbed to his injuries. The event was shut down for approximately 90 minutes after Lopez’s crash.
